I found an image that summerizes my wish.
I think the only real thing I could say to that is:
Yeah, that's where I'd start. And then I would make that game a true action-adventure RPG. Actually, I think I'd make the combat somewhat similar to FFXII and/or FFXIII-2.
OOH! And I would take advantage of the terrain. Fighting in a forest and the opponent's Pokemon starts charging up a big attack? Jump behind a tree! But the AI isn't stupid, they'll jump behind a tree too, if you try the same thing.
In the same thought train, I THINK I recall reading how the gen 1 of Pokemon was supposed to have some 190-ish Pokemon, hence all the Missingno. Pokemon, why Mew wasn't officially in the original games, and so on. Gamefreak? MAKE IT!
I've said it before, I'll say it again: I want a team-based shooter where the only thing modified by the difficulty setting is the AI of your team. On super easy, your buddies do most of the heavy lifting and you're along for the ride. On god mode, your team will accidentally throw grenades at themselves... and you.
I want to see a game that obeys physics, thermodynamics, and the rest. No more "falling 100 feet is fine if you land in a deep puddle" crap. If you're close to lava without adequate space-armor protection, you'll roast.
OOH! And no more clipping issues with anything, ever. I'm not a game programmer, but I wonder how hard it'd be to code in a "this is solid, that is solid, one doesn't go through the other" property on top of certain textures.
Gargoyle's Quest/Demon's Crest. Bring that back. 2D, 2.5D, 3D, doesn't matter. How perfect would that game be? Just start with a Metroidvania style, and the rest of the game will come along naturally. Make some enormous bosses, and we're all good.
