That one title which you most commonly tend to put on whenever you feel like playing a game.

Way back a couple of generations ago it was Jedi Academy multiplayer (who else remembers those days?). It was a ton of fun to play with friends when I wanted nothing more that to relax and have a good ol' chat.

Once Halo 2 came out it took over that role, including every single sequel (yes, I was very much a Halo fanboy. Custom mode has a habit of doing that)
That stayed all the way up to Halo:Reach, but by that point I gave up on console gaming and migrated over to PC.

A couple of MMO phases aside, Mount and Blade/Napoleonic Wars was the game me and my friends most commonly could be found playing.

I'm sad to say though, but I am now without a "go-to" game. So it would be interesting to perhaps get some ideas on games that seem to have a lot of re-playability for others.

Currently a combination of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, Age of Empires 2 HD and Dragon Age: Origins.

Back in the day it would have been TF2 every time, as proven by my shocking play time of 920 hours.

Chivalry and Red Orchestra are the games I keep floating in between, depending on my mood. Those new weapons they added in Chivalry are...interesting to say the least. Can't say the slingshot is particularly useful though.

Shadow of the Colossus. I always seem to go back to that game whenever I get the urge. I think I've played through it at least seven times by now.

Save for pissing about with the flails for the knight when they were first released, I haven't put much time in to the new weapons. Still can't beat cracking skulls with the maul.

Hmm, I think it must be Plamts vs Zombies. I just really like that vase smash minigame. On the other hand, it's not something I can play for a very long time - probably half an hour or maybe an hour before I decide to do something else. Lately, I think I'm getting more and more into Killing Floor, though. It's just fun to shoot stuff and gain levels and get weapons. It's probably the reason I liked Crimsonland so much before PvZ. Actually, probably Crimsonland is my goto game. Not as much these days but I used to boot it up all the time before. And if I really want something that's not 10-20 minutes of vase smashing I'd still go for Crimsonland. Well, Killing Floor, now, to be honest, but I've only played KF for the past three months - it was Crimsonland before.

If I don't feel like shooting and I want something longer, then I start a new random map in Heroes 3. That's probably going to eat up several hours (maybe across two days).

And when I'm stumped what long term thing to play (so, more than a single sitting), I go for Bloodlines. Can't help it. I've always got it installed. And that's actually it, the three games I won't remove from my PC are Bloodlines, Crimsonland and Heroes. In fact, I've honestly had Heroes 3 across my computers for a total summed time more than I've had Solitaire or Minesweeper.

League of Legends I guess... I jump between LoL, BlazBlue and UMVC3 daily >.<

My LoL playing has taken a dark turn I think. Binding /laugh to Space was a great idea at first but, well... Let's just say I played too much Nunu Bot and I end up hitting Space while doing my proper abilities unconsciously on every character now. You aren't playing Nunu Bot right if he isn't in the middle of his laugh whenever you hover over him.

Otherwise Katawa Shoujo really, i'm literally loading it right now. Time to try and do Lily's route... Gahhhh no, sorry, I need to do Hanako's route again. She's just too cute to leave alone.

LOOK AT THIS! WHAT IS THIS EVEN?!

I've seen the quarter-staff used to pretty ridiculous levels of efficiency.

But I don't think the maul ever stopped being the ultimate trolol weapon though. Jump in the middle and LB1 spam to victory

I always come back to TF2, even if it's just a couple rounds every few months. The game has somehow gotten better with most of the additional weapons, despite the chaotic winds of F2P and hats.

Back in the day it was Command and Conquer 3, but I haven't played it in a few years.

Bubble Bobble arcade edition, Metal Gear Solid or classic Mario Brothers I mostly go to old arcade games if I just want to piss around. If I'm just looking to kill time I want something that plays fast and you can just shut off with out worrying about a save. Minecraft would be the only exception.

When I'm with friends, whatever Halo title is the most recent at the time, just because Halo has the best split screen of any current gen console game (4 player split screen, in online multiplayer, with a single gamertag).

If I'm by myself it's typically either whatever is newest in my backlog, or TF2, because really who can stay away from TF2 for more than a couple of weeks?

This is a bizarre toss-up between Morrowind, Legend of Mana, and Rune Factory 3.

Oh, and CounterStrike: Source. Though I seem to be leading away from that recently.

I don't really have a game like this. I wish I did, because I always have the same problem after I finish one, when I putter around aimlessly and purposelessly because I can't decide what game I want to play next. But there are certain games that I always come back to, and which never fail to make me feel better, no matter what my mood is. Those games are, in order from least to greatest, Morrowind, FFX, and FFIX. So one of those is always a good bet when I'm trying to find something to play.

Right now, definitely dota 2.
It used to be SC2, and it'll likely be again soon, if my growing urge is anything to go by.

I was like you until my Xbox red-ringed; a Halo game was always my default choice, whether it be Reach, ODST, Wars (oddly enough), or even Anniversary in the latter months. As I made the gradual transition to PC gaming, Portal (my favorite game ever despite not having played it until a year ago) took up the reins even after I successfully earned gold medals in all of the challenges, completed all of the achievements, etc. It didn't really matter that its puzzle-solving gameplay makes it among the least conceivably replayable games - once you memorize the solutions, practically all challenge is lost - because the campaign experience is just that finely crafted. (Similarly, Portal 2 had its own stint as well.)

At this point, though, I too don't really have a comparable go-to game. The closest I've got is Minecraft, but even then, writing this post has made me realize that my ideal go-to game is one that can be picked up and played without stress or long-term commitment to keep me from being able to set it back down just as easily, whereas Minecraft revolves around continuously building up your territory, resource supply, and possessions in addition to being impossible to play for less than twelve hours at a time. Among my library, The Binding of Isaac holds perhaps the most promise given its very short-term nature; probably the reason I don't play more of it is that the relatively high difficulty level (I still have yet to beat it), despite keeping me repeatedly retrying during a session of it, becomes faintly offputting when I'm faced with the prospect of starting a new session.
