So, what is your golden rule when playing minecraft. This is for both singleplayer or multiplayer.

Singleplayer:
"Never stray to far fom the nest. Unless you you have a compass"

Multiplayer:
This is more for griefing and others, and I heard this as a server rule but it is always something I keep in mind (also heard this on an LRR podcast.)

"The world is theoretically infinite. Remember that."

So what is yours?

EDIt: Thanks for making me a hot thread, and for some excellent responses. Also if you don't play minecrat, don't post a comment.

Same as always, never mine the block under you.

Does anyone know a decent multiplayer server?

Singeplayer:

"Play on Peaceful, having to worry about night and wait it out costs too much time!"

Granted, beds make it easier to fix this but I still prefer being able to not worry about sunset and to simply be able to continue building things.

DO NOT dig up.
Up isn't that bad. If it's water or gravel, you can easily survive. If it's lava, you can always get back and block it off.
DO NOT dig down is much more golden. If it's lava or a pitfall - consider yourself toast.

Lighthouses.

Always have markers to lead you back to your main camp, and always have an especially large one to point out your spawn point. Usually, I stack two cobblestone pieces on one another, then cover it with torches.

Looks pretty cool from a distance, actually. Reminiscent of the set of torches from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

DO NOT BUY.

Not that I don't think it's great, quite the opposite in fact. I wish to continue as a functioning member of society!

if you dont have a compass, or even if you do, and you want to remember a cool spot you've been to, build a giant tower of dirt or something that you can see from afar and you can find your way back if you get lost

A lesson I learnt the hard way... "Never, ever make a block of TNT, proudly place it in the middle of your beautifully constructed house and hit it."

I had to rennovate.

Bring at least 3 food items. Never dig directly above or below you, look all around when emerging from your house or hidey hole(creepers man!), dont get too greedy when mining, and if you arnt having fun then play the game a different way then you are currently.
