Make an underwater base. Why? They're cool.

Build tons of 62 block high towers and connect them with bridges. Make the bridges five spaces in width, put fences and torches. No need to worry about monsters anymore.

Use glass. Tons of glass. While you're at it, find some clay and make bricks to build a house with. Pretty sure it's creeper proof and looks nice, too.

Don't fear the creeper. You can usually survive an explosion with enough health to dash back home.
Never go out at night unless you're looking for trouble.
Skylights in mineshafts are excellent ideas/traps for skeletons/zombies.

My golden rule for Minecraft? Don't buy it - it is a life ruin-er. I bought it today after looking at this thread at around midday, it is now midnight and I have moved from this chair TWICE. I was supposed to spend all day in the library reading about Hogarth but I built I mega fortress instead which is much better.

I suppose my real golden rule would be...
"Never empty a bucket of water"
I emptied one in a tower of my doom fortress and now that tower is a giant waterfall so I abandoned the entire operation in favour of a MEGA TEMPLE on a random island somewher and I am going to build to biggest bridge you've ever seen!
