Chosen savior of Mankind? No. Badass bane of alien oppressors? No. Pissed-off, psychotic self-preservationist? Yes.
Hahaaha, I fuckin' LOVE this series!

Gordon axed him for help, so he drove his motorcycle like the speed of sound.

I...Sadly, I have never played Half-Life. Any of them. I fully intend to though, probably on the PC.

But I have watched my friends play it and from that experience I got that he was one of those "go with the flow" guys, never really getting worked up about anything, but willing to help in order to keep people alive. He's also kind of goofy and perfectly willing to crack a joke, even in the middle of a violent firefight. He also prefers melee weapons over everything except the Gravity Gun and explosives.

I saw Gordon as a cheerfully optimistic guy who then found himself frustrated beyond belief as he came to yet another closed off section and spent the next three hours saying to himself 'where the hell's the door'?

Also when he got the suit I made Gordon a sci fi nerd.

(I cannot for the life of me remember where I read it, or who it was from), I realized he was right.

Now, the long aside... aside, I'll get to the point. Gordon Freeman's muteness allows a certain level of projection as to what you believe him to be. Who is Gordon Freeman to you?
It was brought up a lot in this thread http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.115020?page=5

Mazty and I had a fairly epic argument about it, but loads of people in the thread says it was good, and I couldn't agree more.

Gordon Freeman to me is an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation, surrounded by those who love and respect him to help make it through the day. It's those people that guide him on the right path, no matter how treacherous - it's always the right way.

He really is out of his depth, but he's forced to go on - and he adapts to his situation with vigor and determination. He does whatever it takes, even if he's told to do it.

I don't think it's a matter of sheer affection for Alyx, it's more than that. It's everyone he's every known - Barney, Eli, Dr. Kleiner. All those who made him who is today - A world saving Physicist.

A bit stereotypical yes, but I do feel that way when I play.

Indeed, video game characters without personalities are the best kind. You can fill them in with anything you like. The Master Chief from Halo 1 was like that.

I like to think if I was thrust into a world overtaken by aliens who got some inspiration from Hitler except they wanted to make us robots I'd be mute.

Y'know, funnily enough, mine was the exact same as yours.
With perhaps more of a jerkass facade than full on jerkassery.

Zombie Goasts!

I love that video.

Hmm, anyway. Freeman to me?
Well, he certainly has no problem killing and/or maiming, so he must be either slightly psychopathic, very battle-hardened or a mixture of the two. Either way, he's obviously no stranger to trauma and combat. He must have a large degree of combat experience, as he's able to flawlessly and quickly reload and handle weapons. He does, however, have feelings, as he definitely cares for Alyx and goes to great lengths to keep her alive.

He is obviously very intelligent, and a renowned and respected Theoretical Physicist. This is shown from the gasps of surprise and adoration from onlookers ("Gordon Freeman!" etc.). However, he isn't a particularly emotional person, and seems to be in a constantly detached frame of mind. While certainly not a nihilist, as he fights for freedom from opression almost constantly, he doesn't much consider the moral implications of most of his actions, again leading me to think he has psychopathic tendencies.

Honestly when Jack got a

It wasn't that bad when Jack got a voice.
You're probably right, but it just wasn't the same anymore...
It was like I knew someone, then over night they became a different
person, maybe not a bad person, but it's still wierd and hard to adjust to!
