I've noticed that I've mentioned 'Nas' several times today, and it got me thinking. Nas' first album, Illmatic was quite possibly the greatest debut album ever, however the follow up, It was written had one half-decent track, and even that wasn't as good as the worst track in Illmatic. This was followed by awful albums, Nastradamus, and I am ... The Autobiography, before he pulled it back with the brilliant Stillmatic.

So, fellow Escapees, have you ever had an incredibly promising artist just completely let you down in epic proportions?

I would say St. Anger, but that would be weird because St. Anger doesn't exist.

Marilyn Manson's Eat Me Drink Me was pretty disappointing at first, but I grew in to it.

21st century breakdown. however, after American Idiot, Green Day would have needed pure awesomeness to even level with it, something 21st century breakdown didn't do.

Well, let's see. Hisoutensoku, I reckon. It just doesn't compare to the music in the rest of the series.

No, I do not expect anyone to know what that is.

And yet I think if they'd just dropped the theatrics and desperation to do a "rock opera" and cut the mediocre tracks off the album, it could have been brilliant. Real shame.

OT: I've grown into it now, but Appeal to Reason by Rise Against was something of a disappointment at first (mostly because I'd listened to the best two tracks before I bought it. not making that mistake again)

Arctic Monkeys with Humbug. It was such a departure from their style, deciding to go with the slow-tempo songs.

Also, Linkin Park's Minutes To Midnight... Not good at all.

EDIT: Also, Green Day with 21st Century Breakdown.

I'm not sure of this counts, but a friend of mine kept telling me about someone named Andrew WK, and that he was really good, blah blah blah. So when I went to the Fleamarket the next day, and saw an Andrew WK CD for two bucks, I was excited to get it. I didn't notice it only had two songs on it, only one of which worked.

That song was good though.

Eh I have never had a album let me down as much as a song has let me down. Like once there was a song called the solders final beat, turns out to be some crappy Heavy, heavy, heavy metal song, like I was let down by the title. I was hoping it would be slower and sadder.

I was going to say that, but after seeing them live it kind of redeemed it for me. I like some of the songs on it, but it's far from their best work. I can respect their reasons for changing styles though...still, holding out for a remix album after this next one.

hmmm, I think In Scilico would be one of them, but Pendulum really redeemed themselves with Immersion. Another is 10,000 Days by Tool, still a good album, but it just didn't reach how amazing the other albums/EP were.

Yeah, hopefully. I mean, Hybrid Theory was really good (And so was Reanimation) and I liked Meteora too. But Minutes just didn't do it for me.

metallica's st. anger...

granted, they had load and reload and black album which I didn't like, but i actually believed st. anger was gonna be a return to form for these guys... i had listened to the title track on radio the day before the CD was released, and I was too happy there was double bass drums, that I didn't realise the actual song was a bunch of... you know what...

Anyway, I still remember skipping school with a friend, going from record store to record store, getting told they were expecting it "any time now". I ended up getting the digipack edition that very afternoon, and i was trying hard to like it. In fact, I liked it at first, but after some time (didn't take long) i realised it was unlistenable...

I still got the CD but I won't listen to it.

Death Magnetic was disappointing too... Thank god Megadeth's Endgame was good, even though I like all their albums, except for Risk...

I'm really not a fan of NINs Year Zero. I let With Teeth slide because he's getting old but.. I guess I just miss the days of The Fragile and everything before it.

Hell, I even liked Broken more than Year Zero, and there were only like 6 songs on that.

Fat of the Land. I would have said Roots, but Chaos AD gave you advanced warning so it was pretty much expected.

See, I'd be tempted to say American Idiot. Because I'm old enough to remember Kerplunk, Dookie and Nimrod.

Definitely The Fratellis, not because of the music but because of the fact that they broke up after their second studio album. They were kinda brit. rock and the crazy thing is I didn't know a single person that didn't enjoy listening to them, even my friend that likes Prog Rock and Metal.
