I also agree completely with the OP about Nas. Other honourable mentions in that genre: Mobb Deep's "Murda Muzik" was also quite a crappy turn after the gobsmackingly brilliant "Hell On Earth" (and subsequent albums were even worse), Public Enemy's "Muse Sick-N-Hour Mess Age" was so bad it basically killed the band's career off, Ice Cube's "Lethal Injection" saw him softening up and embracing lame trendy P-Funk, a move from which he never recovered, Wu-Tang can't make a decent record anymore, the list of rap artists who fell off goes on and on...
Yeah, basically all of Rap is just slacking. I hear that some of Nas' more recent stuff is better, but I can barely bring myself to listen to it after the disappointment...

When I first heard "Reign In Blood", I mean yeah there's a few good songs on there, but the rest of it was so repetitive, it kinda reminded my of AC/DC

I'm not sure of this counts, but a friend of mine kept telling me about someone named Andrew WK, and that he was really good, blah blah blah. So when I went to the Fleamarket the next day, and saw an Andrew WK CD for two bucks, I was excited to get it. I didn't notice it only had two songs on it, only one of which worked.

That song was good though.

Angels and Airwaves. I was (am) a HUGE Blink fan and was really excited to see what Tom could do solo, bought "We Don't Need To Whisper" the night it came out, and found it a resounding MEH. Of course, "I-Empire" and "Love" are actively BAD, where as "Whisper" had a couple decent tracks ("The War" and "Start the Machine" are CLASSIC), but when Mark Hoppus and (+44)'s one and only release, "When Your Heart Stops Beating" came out 4 months later, it blew me out of the water and just made AVA's overblown concept-driven egomaniacal clusterfuck even more of a relative letdown.

Oh, and I disagree about 21st Century Breakdown and Minutes to Midnight. They're...different from the rest of Green Day and LP's discography, but I don't know, I like it when musicians change their game up a little.

new alice in chains. forced myself to buy it cuz of the absence of Layne may God rest his soul. but i just couldnt bring myself to listen to a song all the way through on it.
Yes, someone who understands. Back when they had Layne they stood out, now with the new vocalist they sound like shitty and generic metal.

I would have to say Mclusky breaking up for a musical let-down, they were a brilliant and damn fun band.
I was really, REALLY hoping it would be good. Now, I'm too afraid to listen to the new album.
I mean, what the fuck, Jerry? Nickelback? Really?

The Infection, by Chimaira. After the sonic ambrosia of their previous two albums, Infection was just...bland. Slow and sludgy, not their style at all.

Also--and this is reaching back into the past for me, but I love them enough that it doesn't matter--The Clash's Combat Rock[i/] really didn't do it for me. It wasn't bad per se, but it didn't have the spark of their earlier work.

Guns n' Roses - Chinese Democracy
It took them something like 13 years to release it after their previous album, and after all that wait it ended up to be awful, and a huge letdown.

I don't remember much of the letdowns that I've listened to, but one that has always stuck to my mind is Minutes to Midnight, by Linkin Park.

I mean, ugh.

Also, even though I started listening to it pretty recently, I think Skindred's latest album isn't nearly as good as the first two.

Minutes to Midnight by Linkin Park. I was a pretty big fan, but when that came out it was so wussy sounding and overplayed, I was driven to buy this shirt:

My disappointment came from back-tracking a discog, specifically Animal Collective's past releases. After listening to Jam and Merriweather I was like "This shit is fucking awesome. I don't understand why the words 'hipster trash' are thrown around every time someone brings them up on /mu/." Later, I listened to earlier stuff. Feels was okay, Tongs was kind of dull, but Indian was where I finally threw off my headphones and shouted "HIPSTER GARBAGE HIPSTER GARBAGE HIPSTER GARBAGE HIPSTER GARBAGE HIPSTER GARBAGE". Didn't help that I took a stab at Panda Bear's solo album Person Pitch and had an equally negative reaction toward it.

For recent discoveries, I'm not crazy about Autechre's Oversteps.

21st century breakdown. however, after American Idiot, Green Day would have needed pure awesomeness to even level with it, something 21st century breakdown didn't do.
See, I'd be tempted to say American Idiot. Because I'm old enough to remember Kerplunk, Dookie and Nimrod.
I have those albums too and yes, they were much better than American Idiot, it is no comparison. However, American Idiot as a stand alone album was epic, although i think Green Day sold out and became 'unpunkified?' with it. But you can't deny, American Idiot is much better than 21st Century Breakdown.

He's far from the worst offender. The new stuff is actually reasonably good. He'll never do another Illmatic, that's for sure, but he's still a lot more listenable than most of his contemporaries.

The Hives - Black & White. What a load of commercial bullshit! Veni Vedi Vicious and Tyrannosaurus Hives were two of my most treasured albums in high school and college, then B&W comes out and it's full of hip-hop production and ready-for-TV filler tunes and just made me sick to my stomach. Then I found this video today and my confidence was restored completely:
My buddy told me about this yesterday and I damn near pissed myself with glee, and the video is simply great. The Hives, returning to form by covering one of the mid-west's great unknowns of 80's hardcore. Holy damn this is great, I just hope next time out they make a whole album of this kind of material! This is what the Hives were born to do!

Muse.
Absolution was an excellent album and I love every track on it.
Black Holes and Revelations had a few great tracks and a few bad, I'd say 50/50.
Origin of Symmetry was terrible.
HAARP was awesome, as most Live albums are.
Hullabaloo Soundtrack was... meh.

Their latest album, The Resistance, was a failure. MK Ultra was the only good track.

Well, that's something. I know that he's far from the worst offender, it was more that so much incredible promise, was...well, I was devastated.

I might give some of his stuff a look, I know I liked Stillmatic.

Another rapper is Big Mike. Somethin' Serious was a classic, and Still Serious was just poor...

Ah well, commercialism has almost completely murdered my favorite genre...

21st century Breakdown. I like early Green Day more than the more recent Green Day, but American Idiot is still either my second favorite or MOST favorite Green Day album. I seriously like every song on that album, and something about the story resonates with me.

21st Century Breakdown comes around. No epic songs a la Jesus of Suburbia, the longest is fucking 21 Guns. No clear storyline. I'm starting to think it was just Billie Joe writing down his ideals and saying "Oh wait, that's just how Christian feels!". A few really crappy songs, and a lot of mediocre ones. Christian's Inferno and See the Light flat out sucked, which is awful because Whatsername (American Idiot) is probably my favorite finale to any album ever. The only tracks off that album I DID really like were the title track, Before the Lobotomy, and East Jesus Nowhere. The rest of them were just kind of "meh". Basically, my least favorite Green Day album.

Also, What Hits!? from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Simply because I heard Knock Me Down and knew Under the Bridge and loved them both, so I was hoping the rest of the album would be something like that. For some reason, I didn't really like the rest of it, and it was a Greatest Hits. At least Stadium Arcadium is awesome, although impossible to listen all the way through.

EDIT: Majorly ninja'd with 21st Century Breakdown

I've noticed that I've mentioned 'Nas' several times today, and it got me thinking. Nas' first album, Illmatic was quite possibly the greatest debut album ever, however the follow up, It was written had one half-decent track, and even that wasn't as good as the worst track in Illmatic. This was followed by awful albums, Nastradamus, and I am ... The Autobiography, before he pulled it back with the brilliant Stillmatic.
At least most of his albums are much better than stuff that's out now.

I thought The New Danger was a bit of a disappointment after Mos Def's amazing work of art Black On Both Sides, and before that Mos Def and Talib kweli are Blackstar. Although I have learned to like the album, it was a weird change from his usual.

Mos' newest release Supermagic is a hugely underrated album.

i would say any of in flames newer stuff. They used to be part of the mighty trio of melodeth bands but became more metalcore and became less than amazing.
Also BFMV's fever was a piece of crap.i've lost alot of respect for BFMV due to incidents with their producer and letting him change too much of the album.

The absolute worst musical disappointment I've gone through (suffered?) is the album The Unspoken King by Cryptopsy. Not only does the music suck ass on a gargantuan scale, but the band's response to what the fans have said is basically; "Oh, you don't like our new sub-par pop/deathcore album? It must be because you are immature. Fuck you."

Judging from the previous posts, this might not be popular either, but I have been thoroughly disappointed by In Flames' efforts since Clayman. Come Clarity was such a big disappointment that I crucified and burned my vinyl copy of it. Dead serious. How does a band that released such classics as Lunar Strain and Whoracle sink so low?

And yet strangely I, not usually a Muse listener, quite like it. Have they "become too mainstream"?
Though I felt Exogenesis was too "progressive".
Also it's a shout-out to / maybe even a concept album about Nineteen Eighty-Four. What more do you want?
