Your history with Let's Play

Today I was watching a Let's Play of Perfect Dark, done by one of my favorite LP'ers, Cruelest Chris (Or EvilTim if you're a SA user), and it occurred to me that I could not remember how I stumbled upon his channel and began frequently watching Let's Plays. After taking a bit of time to look back, I remembered that I had loved the game Castlevania 64 as a kid, but was too timid to actually get through the maze section where the player was chased around by some sort of Frankenstein abomination that couldn't be killed, and had wanted to see how the game actually turned out. On a whim, I searched for "Castlevania 64 playthrough" on Youtube and found CruelestChris's channel, enjoyed his commentary over the game, and began watching more and more of his LP's. I then found other LP's of games I had always wanted to play but never had, such as Jak and Daxter I-III, and even somehow stumbled upon Restsuprae, a SA-inspired MST3K version of Let's Play.

So, I'm curious, Escapist, where did your Let's Play experience begin?

Let's see... It's started with Chuggaaconroy.

I was replaying Super Mario Sunshine a couple years ago because I never got around to finishing it, so he helped a whole bunch. He has some great humor, too.

I've started doing the walkthrough thing a week ago. My first game is Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.

Only 2 parts in but I think it's going nicely, even though my Roxio keeps screwing with me.

The first one that I watched and kept watching was X (or Davidr64yt).
I started with his Minecraft series, and he's now one of the few youtubers that I will consistently watch no matter what game he's playing.

Boatmurdered. It was linked from a 1d4chan article I was reading (FUN I believe). Next I saw some Chuggaconroy stuff, then some of Slowbeef's stuff. Now I just occasionally watch some of The Runaway Guys videos and pokecapn and friends, the latter being truly hilarious.

Just searched for games on Youtube where I wasn't sure whether I'd like to play them. Or some games which I didn't want to play but still was curious about the story. Some of the LPers were very entertaining and I wanted to see more from them, so I started to watch their other videos.
For example, I was looking for Minecraft videos because everyone was talking about it at that time and I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. I stumbled upon X's Minecraft videos and loved them, then I watched his Half-Life 2 LP (sadly still not finished) and watched most of his other videos.

It began with Mangaminx being Mangaminx.

She's back? When did that happen and have I missed much?

I remember my first Let's Play was Chuggaaconroy's Super Mario Sunshine one. I was stuck on a part and Episode one of his LP of it was at the time the first Youtube result for searching "super mario sunshine".

I'm not sure... I think it may have been HellfireComms playing Abe's Oddysee... Maybe. Well, that's the earliest one I can remember at least. The earliest let's player that I still watch is TobyGames. Only watch some of his stuff now, but watched the whole of his Amnesia playthrough. In fact I can remember why I watched that, a friend linked me a "best of Amnesia Reactions" video and a couple of clips from his playthrough were in it. From that ended up watching the series.

Oh I think we're talking about the same Vicas. Last LP I saw of his was where he played Super Mario 64 with his feet. I nearly died laughing, especially when he had slowbeef and Diabetus guest-star.

She was horribly embarrassed about the whole channel-ditch, plus her LP stuff on her computer was destroyed, so she made a new channel, TheRPGMinx. She still does some horror stuff, she's doing Silent Hill 3 right now.

One of the first LP's I remember watching was part of L0rdVega's (who isn't active anymore) playthough of the Shivering Isles DLC due to the fact that I was stuck at one part when trying to find and kill Syl because I wasn't going around the room in a way to see the button I need o press. I've watched several LP's since then, but I don't watch too many at the moment.

We are. I've only seen Slowbeef's Prime LPs and Vicas was the best part of those LPs for me in many ways. I always got so annoyed when Slowbeef got stuck so Vicas being around was definitely a good thing.

I started with Cloud8745 (back in 07 or 08) I moved on to others like UltraJMan, ProtonJon, Chuggaconroy, Northernlion, PewDiePie to even CholeraNinja.
Theses are only a few of the LPers I watch. I even wanted to do some LPs myself but I lack to programs to run em and I also lack the multitasking to play and comment at the same time without focusing too much on the game.

i started with Achievement hunters Let play's, they're really the only ones i watch,i also watch Yahtzees and Gabes lets play every now and then.

I was in and out with watching them before I really even knew what a Let's Play was. I always sort of liked the idea of hearing what people actually sound like when they play games. When I watch a play-through, it often feels a bit soulless to me like it's just some kind of high tier gaming machine playing through the game effortlessly. When I hear the voices, it reminds me that the player is human to, and a lot of the stumps that I frequently find myself tripping over are actually things that other people have trouble with too and that I don't actually just suck horribly at all video games.

We are. I've only seen Slowbeef's Prime LPs and Vicas was the best part of those LPs for me in many ways. I always got so annoyed when Slowbeef got stuck so Vicas being around was definitely a good thing.

Definitely. For such a cocky player, Slowbeef got stuck an awful lot and would have had to consult Gamefaqs nearly every video without Vicas' guidance. I'm surprised that the Chozo was able to remember nearly 95% of Prime's walkthrough and secrets, especially after he confessed that it had been a while since he had last played.

I'm a huge fan of these, as well, Gabriel and Yahtzee work incredibly well together and I took refuge in the fact that they were stumped by Hugo II, just as I was, when it was first released.
