Are you rural? That sort of download indicates you're living very far away from an exchange. If so, try looking into a local ISP that can provide speeds using radio wave technology. I live rurally, and have my internet provided by a local company called Boundless Comms, they give me 20Mbps for £40/mth (it's a lot, I know, but they are the only ones who can fill 20meg in this market, so they can charge what they like sans competition).

It's essentially a wireless antenna that looks a little bit like this:

[/spoiler]

It is attached to my chimney and points towards (it's a condenser antenna, not a diffuse one) their mast on a local hill range. That mast then transmits via 20GHz Microwave frequency to a T1 connection in Manchester. From my house to their mast, it transmits on one of the 4G radio bands, and can theoretically get up to 130Mbps, but they artificially cap at 20. Ping is awesome, 30ms to more or less every big population center in Britain, 70ms over to Germany (the only European country worth caring about as far as internet services are concerned) and 130ms over to the US.

Before Boundless, I was stuck on a 3Meg connection with BT that was unstable as hell. Though, I would have no trouble going back to BT if they provide Infinity up here at a better price.

I hope you can get your situation sorted.

Because I've had problems in the past economically, I have to get my internet through a friend; her name is on the contract and I pay her every month. It's pretty fast at around 20MB/s down and 2MB/s up. It's mobile internet though and it has a cap of 40GB which I somehow manage to blow through every month what with games, YouTube, etc. So right now I'm stuck at what is supposed to be around 200kb/s, but really boils down to roughly 100.

And Steam wants to update my games =/

Is it good? Does it disconnect a million times a day? (Like mine does) What is your average download rate? Oh and who the hell provides you internet? (I'm wanting a replacement damnit!)

I ask these questions because my internet SUCKS ASS and I want to know what everyone else has in comparison. My average download rate is about 60kb/sec which is so damn slow and the stability is a fucking joke. If anyone in my house loads up google images, my internet will just slow to a halt.. So yeah, fuck you BT.
My connection is very solid and it usually drops once every two/three weeks... My average download speed (from Steam, for example) is around 6.4MB7/s to 7.2MB/s (MB not Mb) which isn't bad considering I'm paying for 10MB/s and I usually have two PCs online. As for my ISP I seriously doubt it's of any help (since I'm from Portugal) but it's called Zon and I pay ?60 for the internet (100Mb/s downstream and 4Mb/s upstream with unlimited downloads), TV (I think I have around 150 channels or something like that) and landline phone (free unlimited talk time for land phones and free international calls for 50 countries after 21:00).

The package also includes a couple of neat features like access to the Fon network, free TV stream (around 30 channels) on PC, smartphones and tablets, free VOIP service for cellphones (same rules apply as the landline but it also allows me to take land calls on my cellphone) and a lot of other stuff I'm probably forgetting (like 2 DVR boxes)...

The best feature it has is the ability to watch any show that was aired on the previous 7 days even if I forgot to record it! I understand some countries don't allow a system like this but this is SOOOOOOO awesome! It works by recording every show on their server which you can call through the EPG and stream it to my TV. Awesome! i actually wonder how this compares to other countries... Anyone care to compare?

I guess that your household is all wireless?

People and wireless technology are not the bestest of friends, methinks.

Lots of noise, lots of crap gear, lots of wrong settings and... oh, those nasty Apple computers. One doesn't like WPA. The other doesn't like being limited to the 20MHz range, even though it would make sense. Another should work fine on 5GHz, but obviously doesn't, even if you plant it right next to the known-good AP.

Do you, perchance, know what (best effort) service you are paying for? Sometimes getting a grip on the network basics and working out a fine, decent map of your topology helps in making things better, if the service isn't screwed proper already.

Bear in mind that the 2.4GHz band is rather crowded already, and that doesn't even include microwaves, wireless phones or bluetooth crap that's turned on 24/7 with no one actually using it.

This is my speed using an old Windows rig with 802.11 BG 2.4GHz on 20MHz only:

...it's well below what I get with wired devices, mind you. But we all have consistent speed throughout our home, and we don't get any random bluetooth or microwave interferences. If I can actually be arsed to do so and remember, I will add the stats for one of the wired boxes later.

It's pretty good, but it really enjoys having occasional days- or week-long spouts of spotty connection.

Well I use Comcast/Infinity and haven't regretted them yet. I have the cheapest internet package (just internet, I don't use television or a home phone, so I didn't see the point in paying for them) paying just over 30 a month. My speedtest.net result is

and that is while downloading a game on Steam (I had a craving to play Dungeonland just before I saw this post).

okay, fuck that.
Nene, das macht so keinen Spasz.

Not sure what's going on there. Using your neighbours wifi from out of your bunker? Cheapest plan available? Mobile phone network internet? It looks decidedly 1990 to me.

When I have internet (I've been using my phone for the last two weeks) it generally sucks. It's often slow when I'm on my laptop and I'm frequently getting kicked from matches and such while playing on XBL.

Not bad for American internet I suppose.

Edit: I did have one time when it was absolutely terrible... but I guess it was kinda my fault. Basically I played an MMO notorious for constant position lag because it was badly coded--it essentially relied on a constant stream of tiny (few bytes) packets, but Windows likes to hold onto those packets and bundle them to be a few kb or something. I disabled this (TCPNoDelay/TCPAckFrequency) and for a couple weeks it was great. Then... my ISP throttled my connection. I disabled it, but my internet was fucked until the next month. It was literally faster to tether my phone than to use my cable internet.

It alright. Does everything I need it to. The actual download speeds I get are about 750kb/s.

If you're sniggering at those numbers, bear in mind that internet standards in Australia are worse than in America.

I'm at work so can't do the speed test but mine is UPC in Ireland and is up to 30 meg(normally it's around 25) so far the quickest Iv'e downloaded at is 2.7mb/s, the upload I'm not to sure on but I know the upload to download ratios sucks in this country.

At work so can't use Speedtest for my home PC, but I've run it enough to know it by heart.

70 down, 10 up.

Pfft, all of you with your fancypants super-duper fibre optics and things.

I'm pretty sure my internet is powered by a potato. In Ireland. In the mid-19th century.

Haha, my captcha is 'bangers and mash'. Escapist, you so punny.

Takes me days to install games from steam...

I came out with this ranking...

hm...so apparently it's not a terrible connection. For whatever reason though, it's not strong enough to keep my home consoles online.
