Pretty much every exclusive Xbox franchise ever. I'm someone who will happily pick a console if offered something decently interesting on it, but I've never owned any of the Xbox consoles simply because there's never been a game on the system that interested me enough to buy one. I was almost going to cave on the XOne since Quantum Break looks pretty interesting, but now that it's coming out on PC, I don't need to bother.

Metal Gear Solid...

I just don't get it. It was written by a crazy person. Not the "they are a genius and appear crazy" kinda crazy, but legit should be in an asylum kinda crazy.
I don't get it either.
People bring up the gameplay, which is like saying a movie has gameplay because you get to push buttons on a remote.
And the story is such utter nonsense I wonder how people can connect to it on any meaningful level. The reiterative dialogue, the tone-death performances, the boring characters, the dumb convoluted plot..
Well if you actually were to shave off the entire story aspect, the gameplay for half it's titles can be considered tight, intuitive, and fun.

As for the story being utter nonsense: "yeah duh" is the only answer from me.
Military espionage anime story telling, written by a guy who drew inspiration from the Kurt Russell parading around era, cheesy dialogue/messages about "life", and some really... really stupid attention to details.
With pee and poop jokes in case you wanted something serious.

It's a desired taste, that I grew up loving personally. But it's dead now soooo... live and let die I guess.

OT: All franchises in this history are overrated. Here I am in the future with my VR headset, exploring my virtual kitchen/armory/daycare center, while you degenerates are still living in the past playing with "buttons and sticks"
Just, ew. Evolve already.

Ah dang, when I saw the title I was thinking of a series that was my favorite, but the least of which I'd put on that list... Sounded like a much better topic then just picking a series I didn't like and bitching about it (because there's already way to much of that in the Internet).
Since my original interpretation was more interesting I'll go with that, I'd say the Tales series, it has some amazing games but also some annoying ones, I still love the series even if it has been quite hit or miss.

There's whole franchises that I will never touch, on the grounds that nothing will ever make me like them.

Not particularly fond of the cuteness to it aaand it completely saturated media while I was growing up.

Huh, understandable. Personally, I just focus on the more cool looking ones, but I can get being burned out of it, but I did rather enjoy the Anime growing up, then again, we only had 3 channels growing up >.>

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Reminds me of when I had a broken leg. They let me use a little TV in my room - I was nine, so 'What money?' - but it was an old thing that only picked up so much. When you got nothing, you'll watch almost anything, sometimes.

If you haven't made that thread, feel free to do so. Seems like a good idea, but it makes no sense to bring it up here.

Let people kvetch.

I'm going to go with the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Then again, I put Kojima slightly above Setzer and Friedberg.

So OP basically made the typical. "Here's what I don't like 'insert massively mainstream title here'" list.

Oh well, here's mine.

Evoland.

Its garbage.

Its a gimmick that you got to fully experience in the first 3 hours of gameplay that covers one of the most bland RPGs ever made. The story is barely there which is aweful in an RPG.

Dungeon Defenders.
I honestly hate any attempt to add random loot drops to a game outside of MMOs and Diablo Style ARPGs. Its padding, and like Evoland is a mechanic that hides very little reason in the story to play the game. Once you've played all the levels you realize you'll be doing them over and over for items. The "Endgame" in this comes in poorly handled and large amounts of DLC that's not worth the asking price.

Borderlands.
See Dungeon Defenders.

Destiny.
See Dungeon Defenders with jetpacks.

Red Faction.
For nailing what makes destroying shit fun in a video game (even in the first 2 games) and then promptly throwing it away in the sequel.

Mercenaries.
See Red Faction.

Terrible story, not much to the end game, lots of repetition

Borderlands
See Diablo, but at least it is funnier

Dead Space
I want the tension back that you had in the first one

Hitman
The dev try to be a little too clever for their own good

Payay
Doing what they said they would never do

Arkham Batman
Batmobile ruined everything. It was becoming tired in Origins and I think has outlasted its stay

Far Cry
Attacking bases is fun but everything is becoming a little boring

I never really stuck around to hate an entire franchise if I did not enjoy one of its entries. So I am always quite bewildered by people who pay money and/or invest time into something they hate. I will say this, though, that I generally find that games have gone the way of the millennials: they become prettier and stupider with every passing year.
XCOM is the only franchise left that I religiously buy, no questions asked (mind the hyperbole).

I don't really play games I don't like. So a franchise I hate... I really wouldn't know. Except...

Borderlands. Samey-Samey brownshooters with pointless, token pretentions at elements of rpgs. Whose games get progressively worse and worse and blander and blander (making me look more favorably on the previous installments with each new game) They gave us splitscreen co-op shooting though, and my friends like it. So I have to play it. No other game ever has made me thing "dear god, give me an escort quest... ANYTHING but "shoot those guys" or "shoot that guy and his buddies" or "shoot those guys and take that thing."

GTA I guess, I mean that's really the only franchise of which I own multiple games that I don't like. I don't even think it's a bad game or anything, I just personally don't like it.

There's quite a few other franchises I think I wouldn't like and as such haven't bought but I'm really not sure about them.

If I had to name a franchise though that really disappointed me it'd be Guild Wars. The first game was so freaking good whilst the second was so horribly mediocre and generic.

can for once we have a positive discussion that celebrates video games? At the end of the day is all opinions and 4 out of 10 people simply choose well loved and popular franchises to cause a reaction from the general public aka troll bait
To build on this and the OP's list I will say that I did really enjoy both Mass Effect 1 and the first Assassin's Creed!

Also, four and a half years after it came out, Skyrim remains one of my favourite and most played games. It's not perfect by any means, but I love it.

Assassin's Creed. I loved the second one, but at this point, the series is like a cross between being trapped in a Dan Brown novel and watching flies fuck.

#1 franchise that needs to just fucking die and never ever come back:

Star Wars.

Two good movies and 1 mediocre movie from the 1970s/early '80s. A couple pretty good video games in the early to mid 90s, and some obscure fan cannon/ EU books for the ubernerds. That was fine. That was good. We all had a good time, and that's where it should have died.

But nooooooo. The prequels. Dear god the prequels. That should have been enough to kill the franchise entirely, but they just kept making more. More crappy TV spinoffs. More terrible video games we never wanted or needed, and you people kept lapping it up.
Now its too late. Disney has the keys and we're gonna be inundated with this garbage from now until infinity. I hope all of you who bought a ticket to see the force awakens are proud of yourselves. You did this.
@Senneca something particularly wrong with Knights of the old republic or galactic battle grounds?
