Hullo Escapists. A night of no sleep makes me want to post threads.

Everyone is OCD on some level, so what's your obsession? What must be done or it will drive you insane?

Me? Even numbers in any trackable stat for me. Such as my post count here. Multiples of 5 are also acceptable. Also I cannot sleep in my bed if I feel dirty. I just cannot fall or stay asleep.

I need symmetry in everything. Lack of symmetry makes me uneasy.

I also feel I have to walk to the left/right of certain objects on the street or I get a horrible feeling that something bad will happen.

Perfectionism in relation to equipment. Yesterday I spent more time than I'd care to just gemming my armour and weapons in Monster Hunter Tri, just the right way so that I got the stats I wanted. Also, I have to shower everyday, I can't stand feeling dirty.

I always have to be moving my fingers, or at least have part of me in motion. I'm lucky that this doesn't follow me to when I'm trying to sleep...

Mostly, it's my fingers, and as such I'm very jittery. It also causes scars on my person to stay for a very long time (Do the math...) If I'm not moving my fingers, I'm tapping either of my legs. Woo...

When I'm nervous, I shake. I'm not sure how much of this is me and how much is my all-time favourite drug lithium, but I do know nervous = shaky hands and rapid pulse.

I've got it right now - I just finished a session of Mass Effect and it creeped me out!

I hate statements like this.
Everyone is not OCD on some level. That sentence itself doesn't even make sense, but regardless of that, it's not true. Think about it, if everyone had it, it wouldn't be a disorder. Everyone has obsessions and compulsions but, no, not to the degree of OCD.

Yep. Actual OCD is a terrible thing to have. To trivialize it the way so many people do nowadays "OMG i am liek so OCD" is really a blood-boiling thing.

Having minor compulsions is not OCD by any stretch of the imagination.

It reminds me of that Scrubs episode with Michael J Fox as the OCD doctor. That was a compulsive disorder, something that takes so much time away from you simply because your brain won't let you do otherwise.

Agreed, I'm presuming from your comments that you either have it yourself or are close to someone who does?

I do not. One of my ex-girlfriends may have had it. She would spend literally hours checking light switches to make sure they were all off. At least three times a night before going to sleep.

Mostly, my comments come from conversations with my wife, who studied early childhood development, and how to teach very young children with various developmental disorders, one of which was OCD. And the material that she studied was borderline disturbing. Four and five year olds who would have panic attacks over wrinkles in their clothing, for example.

I alphabetize my cd collection first by artist name, then chronologically by release date (first-to-last). Buying new cd's all at once and having to shimmy other ones over 'n all that fun stuff. But, that's about all I can think of ocd-wise that's legal, anyhow.

I check things are switched off a lot and have to battle to make myself stop it (sometimes saying XYZ is turned off out loud helps, sometimes it doesn't).

I hand wash a lot, washing your hands with something like fairy liquid will do some damage if you use it by the handful. I usually need to feel a burning sensation before stopping (eczema on hands guarantees it). I love that dry hand wash stuff that evaporates. Burning is good.

I've never been diagnosed and understand the frustration when people self diagnose things like OCD (or ADHD or Asperger's Syndrome. Almost always it is bullshit). I wouldn't claim it myself but do get caught in repeating loops that can suck. At my age I just don't see the point in seeking a diagnosis.

Ah I see, yes sometimes even the more simplistic of cognitive disorders can be the most chilling thing possible.
I get annoyed at my friend who claims he has OCD for the stupidest of things, the biggest of which being because he has to make someone check the front door is locked after checking it himself. It angers me because I feel like he's bastardising this serious affliction just to give himself some sort of quality and extra aspect to himself, and get's viciously defensive if I try to reason against it. It's fine though, I'm the only one who studies psychology out of my friends so they trust me when I say he's, quite frankly, full to the brim of shit.

Allways a point in getting a diagnosis. Even if the point is only to know for certain. Plus, getting a diagnosis might help in getting in touch with knowledgeable individuals who, if it bothers you, may help you cope better.

Anyway.. Just my two cents on that subject.

When you're dealing with very young children, it's important to their development to notice key attributes in developmental or cognitive disorders at a young age.

If you have a concern about it, then that is good enough point to seek a diagnosis. If you do happen to have the disorder, then being able to get any kind of guidance and assistance will be extremely beneficial to you as you get older.

I have a weird thing about symmetry, especially when it comes to hands. If I have a sensation with one hand, the other will itch really bad until the same happens to it (for example, if I pick up something cold or turn a door handle with my right, I have to do the same with the left to stop it itching). Every so often I run my nails along the lines on my fingers, though I couldn't tell you why I do.
This symmetry thing extends to walking down the street; if I step on a line with the centre of my foot, I feel I have to do the same with the other as the centre will start to itch. It happens quite a lot, and I've received many an odd look when trying to keep this up.

I've also started hand washing more as well.

I can't really think of anything specific but I have a minor OCD problem with everything I feel not right
