Its a very large and diverse community, somewhat more detached than other forums I've seen, its probably just too big for everyone to know everyone else. It also seems to be filled by a bunch of people who are almost desperate to prove themselves more intelligent than their peers, when in many cases the facts and figures they load into their posts are probably taken from other sites like Wikipedia. For example, yesterday I was looking at a thread comparing katanas to longswords. Each side was overstuffed with nice little chunks of info about each weapon, its construction, handling etc. Some of those people may own their own swords, but really, how much could they really know about the merits of the weapon other than what they've learned from tv and the internet? How many of them are likely to be medieval weapons historians on one gaming website? Presumably none have actually fought and killed a man with a sword. That kind of know-it-all attitude is everywhere on the forums.
