It's been a while since Knights of the Old Republic 2 hit the shelves.
Some say this game didn't live up to it's predecessor, some say it did.
Some say that it's a good game. Some say that this almost killed the genre. Some say it was too rushed and so on.

I'm interested in The Escapist's opinions on this game! Graphical, Narrative, all the good (And the bad) stuff!

I thought it was great, in many ways better than the first. Because I didn't really keep up with gaming news until about 2 years ago, I didn't know until long after I played it that it was kind of an unfinished product. The ending did feel rushed to me at the time, but some parts of the game were near perfect (Nar Shadaa comes to mind). The ability to train team members to becoming Jedi is also very cool. Darth Nihilus is one of the coolest looking villains in gaming period, with a equally interesting backstory.

Apart from the ending and the bugs, I think it was a fun game. While KOTOR gave me choices, KOTOR 2 made me question my own choices. It's a big plus storywise.

Note* If by some off chance that Obsidian goes bankrupt, whoever gets a chance to hire the writers will have one of the best story games ever. If only they would have a better design team.

I actually played KoTOR 2 before the first one and it made me fall in love with the genre. And in my opinion the only reason KoTOR is better than KoTOR 2 is because KoTOR 2 was never truly finished.

Having replayed the series just recently after the Restored Content Mod was released, I'm honestly torn between which of the two Kotor games I find better. On one hand Bioware's first Kotor while not particularly clever is extremely polished and entertaining, while Obsidian's Kotor 2 has the more interesting plot I find and more options to play the game how you like.

A lot of people harp on Kotor 1 for its big twist, and I'd be lying if I didn't admit it was one helluva twist. But that said Kotor 1 is a one trick pony plot-wise, once you know what's coming half the games charm is gone right there and then. Kotor 2 solves this by not relying on a one-hit-wonder plot twist to keep the players attention, instead taking a clever approach to storytelling and a more complex plot which unfortunately also tends to make the story hard to follow at times.

Hmm... Anyway, regardless of which I actually prefer: Kotor 1's predictable but pristine or Kotor 2's heavily flawed brilliance, they're both damned good games.

That said I'm judging Kotor 2 *WITH* the restored content mod installed. Without, well, Kotor 1 wins easily by merit of the sequel being downright unfinished.

i loved it. it had some flaws, of course, but on whole i thought it was excellent. but then, i never really encountered the bugs so many people talked about (i actually had more bugs in KotOR 1). also, while the ending seemed a little abrupt, i didn't find it excessively so.

Kotor 2 could have been amazing, better than the first, had it actually been finished.

Honestly other than the rushed endings, I always thought Kotor 2 was a real step up from the first, I honestly don't see any downside from it compared to the first.

I think that I loved it more than the original. I think...I've been getting them confused since it's been so long, and I played them both straight through.

What were some characters from KOTOR and some from KOTOR2?

I remember the party members, mostly. Just can't put them with their correct games...

I didn't mind the game I thought it was good, but I thought that KOTOR one was better. I also am pissed that they didn't finish that story but gave a freak'n MMORPG! Assuming that everyone in wants to pay to play a video game. Make MMO fine, but finish the original story let us know how that ended. Like What happened to Revan and all other chrarter from the two games. I'm sorry if I sound am complaining, but that my opinon.

Good, nowhere near as great as the first.
Would've been better if Obsidian had been given more time to actually finish the game (lotsa stuff was cut out, including HK-47 assaulting an entire factory of HK-50s, and the Handmaiden joining your party regardless of gender.)

Much better UI, better character development for ancillary characters, and much better item system.

Worse main story, absolute shit ending, and horribly long sections at the beginning and end where the story is completely and totally linear and the levels themselves (Telos/Destroyer/Malachor) are not fun.

Oh, and too unbalanced item-wise. I 1 shot the final boss with Improved Flurry as a Light Side Guardian.

Well, it has one of the best written characters antagonists since... I don't even know. Kreia is just one of the most interesting characters to grace a video game. Despite the ending's disjointed and confused feel, I still felt it was an incredible experience on par with Planescape: Torment. And with the restored content mode the game actually pulls itself together pretty well now. It's also my belief if Obsidian had another 6mo - a year to polish it, the game would still be the best RPG ever made.

I should just have a signature that says "Yeah, what The Madman said!"

I never finished it.
I had just finished the first game, and this one felt so bleak in comparison that I didn't want to go on.
Also, I hated about every party member the game offers.

I think everyone says it was too rushed- if they hadn't insisted on launching before Christmas and had time to finish the extra planet, the droid factory, Malachor V, the sith academy and half the characters' storylines then it would have been some sort of life-changing spectacular, instead of just a thoroughly enjoyable cosmic adventure romp with a colourful cast of damaged, fleshed-out characters in tow. I'd love to see KOTOR 3 someday, but I think that depends on the success of TOR.

I thought both Kotors were great games and spent countless hours over multiple playthroughs of both. In a lot of ways Kotor 2 outshone the first, as every good sequal should. Improved story telling and combat, the ability to actually affect the alignment of your party members was a nice touch, a wider array of powers, and a lot of depth that went into each character.

However as many before me have mentioned it was held back by how unfinished it was, and after playing through a few times I came to realize and despise that no matter what choices you made the ending would always be pretty much exactly the same.

In some respects, it's better than the first. Little things, like the Jedi robes are better, and I like the lightsaber form system, that you can choose a "class" later on, and the party influence system was good.

However, the ending was DEFINITELY too rushed. That, however, was the fault of Lucasarts (big shock) who forced it out the door in time for a Christmas release.

Bioware even wanted to make a patch correcting all the mistakes and tying up the loose ends, but Lucasarts wouldn't let them.

...

WHY?!?!?!?!
