As long as the radar has a reason behind why it works, i.e. in CoD games it tracks noise or you have an aerial spotter or in Halo you track movement.

If the game has a radar just to have a radar, it seems a bit awkward. Admittedly, though, only if I stop to think about it.

I personally don't like how it's applied in most games, being that I much prefer hunting other players down.

If I HAD to put radar in a game, the way I'd like to see it done is, well, you've all seen the movie Aliens right? And they had the little ultrasonic scanners that would show movement, remember? But thing is, they couldn't be watching it 100% of the time, so I'd make it in the game that it's something you'd have to go out of your way to check that isn't just 'there' and I'd also make it so it just picked up MOVEMENT not ENEMIES, so what you think is a dastardly sniper might just end up being someones laundry flapping in the wind.

That's what I'd really enjoy I think.
Now thats a good idea, I would like to see a game like that. Also I agree on the hunting players down thing, it is much more satisfying to work for your kill than to instantly know where he is and mow him down.
Agreed, if I was pressed to list what my favorite multiplayer shooter memories are, virtually all of them would be times when I found out where the sniper was camping at, sneaking up as close as I can and then filling them full of bullets before they can respond.

Ahh, good times.

To stay on topic though, I would say with my idea it does need to be something you can do quickly otherwise there is no point to it. I mean quick as in you press a button and it comes up in a second and goes away just as fast, so while you're wandering the map it can be something you can check frequently but it's not so fast that you could check it while in combat. This would make it so you wouldn't be able to at-a-glance see more people on the way during combat and that if your sniping you'll have periods of being blind in different ways, like when your looking down the scope you sure as hell aren't checking it and when you are checking it people might be running by in your field of fire that your missing because you're looking at it.

Still though, the most important thing is that it can't be like it is in Modern Warfare where it's a constant at-a-glance in-the-corner-of-the-screen omni tracker.

I dispise them. In Call of Duty, enemies will just randomly quit what they are doing and zoom directly in on me. And with the heartbeat sensor it's the same, only worse.

I like it, as long as it's reletivly balanced like on Call of Duty where it only shows up when somone shoots or you or another team mate "earns" it and even then it doesn't last too long.

I like the radar system in the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 beta. There is a minimap, but only friendlies and empty vehicles and turrets appear. However, if a player is shot, detected by a motion sensor, tagged with a tracer dart, or manually "spotted", they will appear on all opponent's minimaps as long as they are within line of sight of the "spotter". If they hide, there will briefly be a marker of their last known position on minimaps.

It's not omniscient, and it's actually useful.

It annoys the crap out of me in shooters that are supposedly "realistic" unless of course you try to consider a soldier having a HUD and each individual soldier receiving the radar signal from a unmanned vehicle...But I digress. It ultimately depends on the game, but I don't really care for them overall.

Direction of the shots is a good idea to simulate full 360 degree hearing. But the icon should fade after a second.

Project Reality is effing amazing. Shame I don't have BF2 installed now or I'd download the newest client of PR.

I've gotten used to CS:S's radar system, even if it has it little flaws.
