Hello there, fellow Escapists.

I am currently very pissed of, see. I bought Dawn of War 2: Retribution, and I was so excited. I tried it at a friend's and I loved it, so I thought I´d get it myself. I go home, I insert the CD, Steam tells me "Enter CD-Key", after which an error comes out and says that my CD is duplicated. Now of course you can imagine my frustration (My desk took the most of my rage). This is NOT my first problem with Steam. I was unable to install Red Faction Armageddon too, because of a similar problem (Unavailable at my region). Anyway, enough of my ranting ... okay, just a little more: I HATE online activation, because of shit like this I'm forced to resort to piracy (I paid for a retail copy, so shut up!). I remember when all you needed was your disk and a CD Key, simple as that. I despise the fact that EVERY GAME today requires Steam to be activated. Okay, rant over.

So, what do you think of Steam? Do you like it? Why(Not)?

P.S: I have another question. Why doesn't the game install itself from the disk, but has to download itself from Steam? I HAVE THE DISK IN MY COMPUTER, WHY DON'T I USE THAT INSTEAD???

It's always worked for me (thus far, finger crossed).

The prices beat the hell out of Australian retail.

I use it a lot.

I like it.

Because ... I don't know. It gives me some kind of satisfaction. I like looking at the box art maybe ... I like the instructions manual ... I can't exactly explain it. Imagine your favorite book. Now of course you can download it from the internet and read it PDF or something, but it's not really the same as having it there on your shelf along with the rest of your beloved books.

How much is the Austraian retail? Because in Steam, the more famous games are mostly 49.99 euro. In my currency that's around 97 lv. A game from a store is 79,99 (71,99 Pre-Order)

I'm with you on this one. Plus there's that more tangible, secure feeling. Like "This Game won't just vanish if Valve suddenly went defunct" or something. I dunno, I just like holding what I've bought physically. Never gonna get an Kindle for that reason! VIVA LA PHYSICAL!

There is a way to do that, can't remember just how at the moment, but there's something about that in the Steam help database.

Also, they can give you a new CD Key, typically you have to get a scan of a number of things like the box and the receipt to show you legally purchased them and mail those to Valve within thirty days of your purchase and they should get you a usable key.

The receipt ... oh crap ... the ONE TIME I need it and it's nowhere to be found ... I hate myself sometimes. If I send them a picture of the barcode and the box, will that be useful?

I have had basically 0 problems with steam, (only with the actual games themselves,) and I find it a fantastic service. I always hear about people who have big problems but I have seemingly avoided all of them. With no large bugs/failures on steams part there's no reason NOT to use steam. Great deals on great games/ a good community feature/ auto updates/ file verificaiton etc...what's not to love!

It's okay, i use it as my overall fiends list, since most of my friends who i play with, are on steam.
I'm not a big fan of didigat distribution, and physical copies are often cheaper in Denmark than steam prices anyways, i hate it when games are exclusively DD. I like that they have great offers though.
The steam overlay, and how it integrates into games are a plus in my book though.
And compared to the EA TOS, steam respects my privacy, end personal desire to get the most out of my hardware.

Overall, i mike steam,

Steam Support is your friend in this scenario; https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1673-IDGK-4694

This should help you.

Love STEAM. Been using it since October of 2007, and let me tell you, it was a whole nother story around that time. But STEAM has evolved into something much better than it was prior, and we can all finally take pride in this amazing service. One might even call it the savior of PC gaming.

EDIT: It also has an amazing community feature, and the chat function is better than I've seen anywhere else, even in programs that are were created for and are exclusively chat programs.

When I got Dawn of War 2: Retribution it would not install propably so i had to download i crap load of updates to get it to work.

Plus im sick of some of my games crashing because im not in online mode dor example i was playing mount and blade warband in offline mode and it crashed later on i was playing in online mode nothing bad happened and i was playing for hours.

That and im sick of having to download all the updates to be able to play a game even when i try to play it in offline mode it says that this game is not ready to play in offline mode and this drives me up the walls even though there is no reason not to let me play in offline mode without the updates since i cant play online adn thus there is no problem with that.

EDIT:And im sick of having to use steam for a game i bought the pysical copy for.

I love steam, it gets wrinkles out of my clothes and clears my sinuses when they're acting up.

Wait, you mean Steam, don't you? Eh, opinion stays the same, though for slightly different reasons, I've not had any problems with Steam, and I run my non-Steam games through it to take advantage of cross-game chatting.

See, I like the cloud backups of all of my games, and I've never run across the error that you're having OP, though I have heard of it. As far as DRM goes, yeah it's a bit of a pain to online activate everything that you own, but once it's done, at least with Steam, it's done until you change computers, so all in all, it's not bad, especially considering that I do a lot of gaming with a lot of people and it makes things nice and easy when trying to hook up with each other.

I'd probably hate Steam's guts if it weren't for the SALES. You would not believe what I've bought for five bucks in the Steam store.

TBH, I didn't like how I had to install Steam to play a game. I already had Xfire, but I went along with it anyway. There's some features I like, buying games online, sales, and automatic updates.

I should probably say that I don't have a credit card (I'm 16) so I can't purchase anything on my own from Steam and I can't bother my parents with it. So yeah, to me Steam is an annoyance that, unfortunately, every game requires for installation.

CD authentication isn't a Steam issue, its the publisher.

I do have an aversion to the ridiculous number of games that require Steamworks, but most of the issues I run across with games are from the Publishers using crappy DRM.

I love steam but yes, it's pants on head retarded when it won't just install from the damn disc, not all of us are on epic hyperspeed net connections, and 15gb on dial up isn't funny when you've just bought a new game.

I've not personally experienced this however, The Orange Box is what got me onto Steam, and that installed from the 2 DVDs in the case, then just updated itself.

I love steam, never had any problems with it at all.

My only problem is that I keep buying cheap games that are on offer and I'm slowly going poor.
