A few months ago i turned 18 and one of the major points of that day was me going and getting a tattoo. If your interested its my profil picture. This got me thinking what is everyone else's opinion on them? To me getting a tattoo was part of becoming a, for want of a better word, adult. Im the only one in my college class with one. Which maded wonder how other people see them. So speak your mind on the subject

I'm all for tattoos but you really have to have your heart set on it. Do it impulsively and you will likely regret it.

In general, they're not a big deal. Unless you're in a work place setting, where having a tattoo that is not covered by business attire sends a generally bad message. In truth, I tend to look at them the opposite way you do. To adults, they're generally unremarkable unless they're a distraction. Whereas, if you need validation of your adulthood, you aren't an adult yet.

Freaking love them. I have a few, intend to get more, and have shown to be remarkably attracted to girls with tattoos. Point of fact, every girl I've had interest in or dated has had at least one.

For me, personally, a tattoo has to mean something now and forever. It used to be that a man and woman who'd get tattoos of eachothers names actually ment to stay togather, get married, have family and so on, but now because of popular culture they are cliched and thoughtless.

(INCOMING OPINION!)
Tattoos in the public eye can mean many things, but above all, BE COMFORTABLE, your potential job WILL ask about it (if visible), people you know will probably see it (pools and such, unless its on your butt or private area in which case, WHY?!) so its not really about what I think, its about how comfortable you are with it being public knowledge. Personally I think your choice looks cool and shouldn't get much grief from any sources I mentioned.
(/opinion)

To be honest, the idea of popular culture has ruined many ideas and actions that were once thought as deep and meaningful, but don't let that cloud your thoughts, it's just my mind working too hard again. On that note, I would never get a tattoo to 'express my individuality' as the teen excuse goes, because 'expressing' can mean something now and then nothing later.

I've been thinking about the topic of tattoos for myself since I was at least 14 (21 now), and I decided it was going to be a tribute to my life, love, and unique to the smallest detail, which is why I never tell anyone what it is. I have a strange paranoia that people would steal my ideas, it has happened before so you can see what I mean.

I laughed very hard at your photo. very funny and pretty accurate.
my only question is that the grey area on the rest of the guy, does that mean they can be there and won't make a statement?
I am all for tattoos but with anything too many is not a good thing.
such as this is too much in my opinion

I will admit that the guy in the photo that looks pretty cool

I don't hate them all the time, but people really suck at choosing them sometimes. Plus you have to be stuck with them for the rest of your life...that is going to look really awkward when your an aged bag of sag.

I kinda want to do Norn and Celtic inscriptions in each of my shoulders... i think socially the shoulders and sometimes the back are accepteble place to tatoo... other then that, is just a pain in the ass, considering others will look you on the side or simply mock you...

I know someone who irrationally hates people with tattoos I guess because he thinks they are all stupid and short sighted, but I will say that they can at least be interesting, if not occasionally attractive.
I think a meaningful symbol or something you are really proud of is certainly an option for a tattoo that is entirely reasonable, but if you want a dragon going across your body or to commemorate your love for Star Wars, maybe you should just do a bit of body paint and take a picture.

To me tattoos seem like a desperate grab for attention or an attempt to fit in with pop culture form the early 90s. I think less of people who have tattoos and I try to avoid socializing or doing business with the ones who are overly enthusiastic about it.

Yes, if your restaurant hires a body-mod person I will shop elsewhere.

Please tell me you're going to get that in colour and have it take up most of your back.

OT: I dont mind the idea of them. I find it kinda funny when someone tats their body up where you can see it cause it kinda limits your perspective job market, but if you want one, thats fine. but I still reserve the right to laugh if you screw it up or look ridiculous for it.

more personally, if I get a tattoo, Id get two (though Im thinking of looking into a videogame one and a Penguins one). One is one of my design.

<spoiler=The other is this>http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51OByYBXVPL.jpg

although I'd get the number nineteen in roman numerals under it. Id get that on my left shoulder, the one of my design on my right shoulder, then Penguins one on my back between my shoulder blades (or maybe near one, getting a tattoo along the spine seems kinda... dangerous, to me), and if I got a video game one id get <url=http://www.popten.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/ShinMegamiTensei.jpg>the SMT logo on my calf.

...

and I've been playing around with the idea of getting one of the triforce triangles on my left hand, but I'd have to see if my other two friends would do it with me so it makes sense. besides, Im going to be an accountant, so i cant really have tats showing.

My general view of tatoos are that if they represent something that you like, or a special time period of your life they are fine.

I have minor thing against tribal tatoos since(in my opinion)they are really mainstream and mostly is worn by either people who wants to be "aggresive" in the way they are interpeted or just went with what the masses "liked".

But all in all i dont have much against anyone who gets tatoos as long as they can explain it.

And yes i got tatoos of my own and are planning on getting more.

Just a black ink/skin pattern but most likely on the arm. I'm not rich enough to get a back tattoo nor do I want a massive one that will lose its shape faster...

Those that cite tattoos as a bad idea because they may look bad when you turn 50 (ad infinitum), are missing the point that no body looks 'good' at 50.

If you want to get a tattoo because you like it or it has some form of meaning to you, then it is an extension of your personality and I don't see what right anyone has to judge you based on that. If someone is willing to write you off because you chose to have some artwork placed upon yourself that says more about them as a person.

In much the same manner as someone chooses to cut or dye their hair, a tattoo is a personal choice and as long as you aren't doing it just because you can, which is what you are implying, I see no reason but to go for it - of course; unfortunately due to social norms, keeping it covered by general clothing for day to day.

At the moment, I have two tattoos, one on right bicep the 'Socially acceptable rebellious tattoo zone', and another larger piece on my right side ribs; not mentioned above.

I intend to get another in 'DANGER: Tattoos here will become humiliating 500% faster than normal' area. Although I fail to see why a tattoo would make a fat gut more embarrassing.

I always wanted a tattoo, but I still don't have one. The reason I want one is because I can, really. You only live once, and I want to experience as much as I can
My idea for a tattoo is something like this:
