Overrated:

GTA series, Halo series after the first game, Uncharted is very mediocre (not Uncharted 2 which is awesome), God of War 2 and 3, Red Dead Redemption, Assassins Creed (especially AC2 which is worse than 1), CoD series (especially MW2)

Underrated and/or Under-appreciated:

Mirror's Edge (Best 3D platformer this gen), Heavenly Sword (much better than GoW3), ICO & Shadow of the Colossus, Mercenaries (best sandbox game ever, the sequel sucked though), Resonance of Fate, MAG (Best FPS this gen), Midnight Club 2 (best arcade racer ever), Hitman 2 (one of the best stealth games ever), SHADOW OF DESTINY (one of the best game stories on the PS2)
Wow, I thought I was the only one in the world who thought that Assassin's Creed 2 was worse than the first one.

Why did you think it was worse? For me it's because they tried to fix the repetitive crap by adding more repetitive crap to the game; and also the graphics (for some reason) were worse than the first one.

Yeah I was expecting someone to drop the FF7 bomb at some point. Personally my first Rpg was super mario rpg and that was only about four years ago. I was given a snes as a kid as my friend went and got himself a PS1. The thing is I only found out we had SMRPG about ten years later as it had got lost before I played it. Loved it alot and started getting into JRPG's in a big way. Thing is I had missed the FF7 badwagon as my first one was 10 then 12. Although I really enjoyed both, I look back on them now having played better Jrpg's as good but not great.

Anyho with Psn I brought ff7 for the first time about a year ago. I loved it. Story (although a bit odd cos I actually played crisis core first) Music, Atb (remember first time I had played it) it was great fun. It was not my first rpg as many people see it as the game which made rpg's yad a yad a yad a...

Although I don't like the fact that the charecters aren't really that unique a fighters (6 was amazing for that, yet as a downside you never use some gau anyone?) I have a close place for it in my heart which has NOTHING TO DO WITH NOSTALGIA. Loved the game, true its only really talked about because of it impact but yeah I think its got the credit its deserves, however it has definately recived more hatred than it deserves. Same as COD its only hated so much because it such a divisive game.

Deus Ex is one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time. It's been hailed as the greatest game ever by several people. It's getting a sequel next year.

How is Deus Ex underrated?

Overrated: All COD games since 4. The single player is great but the overrated multiplayer pales in comparison to Battlefield and Halo
Underrated: ICO, Second Sight, Zone of the Enders 2, pretty much half of my PS2 collection

Well I thought the first one was terrible; it was stupidly short and the environments were annoying. So yeah consider how disappointed I was with the first and how much I love the second, ZOE2 is one of the best games I've ever played. All the cutscenes are in a hand-drawn beautiful anime style and the game is twice as long as the first. It's beautiful and the voice acting and characters are far far better. Everything about it is 10x better than the first game. Try and get your hands on it!

Some people say Donkey Kong Country is overated but that doesn't stop me loving it. What games do you think deserve more or less credit than they got... What are your choices?
Overrated
-Metal Gear Solid 2: people just don't get that Kojima made it more as a post modern experiment than a proper game, a philosophical joke at the player's expense.

Under-rated
(oh so many)
-The Suffering
-Medal of honor: Airborne
-Painkiller (not so much now thanks to Yahtzee's legendary review)
-Gitaroo Man
-Star Fox Adventures
-Black
-Metal Gear Solid 3 (why is this MGS dismissed? do people really love this Patiot bollocks that Kojima only added as a joke?)
-Zelda: Wind Waker
-Viewtiful Joe
-Mini Ninjas
-Star Wars: Battlefront / Republic Commando /
-Most PC exclusives (because mainstream are fixated on consoles)

Overrated: Modern Warfare 2

Buggy, unpolished, unbalanced mess in Multiplayer. And they did not even nerf the fucking M16 from CoD 4, nothing has pissed me off so much since the AWP in CS.

Underrated: Blitzkrieg series

Some damn good 2d WW2 RTS games, with persistent units and well designed missions. Try them out on GoG if you see them. You won't be disappointed.

Personally I prefered 2 over 3 did like the whole po mo thing going on with it. If any video game goes all Baudrillard (LOOK IT UP!) on me then well done. I love how MGS breaks the fourth wall, especially with boss battles. No one can deny that MGS1 had amazingly cool boss battles.

Oh yeah and Gitaroo Man. BEST GAME EVAR!!!!

You know. I almost want to list every "Overrated" post I've seen so far as Underrated and every "Underrated" post as overrated. Maybe I've been hanging around on the internet way too long but well... pretty much every Overrated game I've seen as been panned to death by most the internet so far. Yeah they've had high ratings from game review sites... However from most the internet... They get panned. Often for reasons which seem a little stupid.

The problem I see is that some people try so hard to not be conformist that they end up as conformist. Then we have a bunch of people hating a game because it's popular rather than credible reasons. I'm not saying people don't have credible reasons to hate games... I'm saying that it seems to me that many hate a game simply because it's popular and they don't want to seem like sheep. Personally I don't base my opinions on popularity. I don't find a game shit because every one likes it. Nor do I find a game good because it was unpopular. Vice versa.
I just slot the game, film or music in and play, watch or listen. If the game, film or song wasn't to my liking... I don't like it... if was to my liking... I'll listen to it again. Couldn't give a fly shit what everyone else things on it. I don't care if the song is at the top of the charts and loved by every one or it's went completely unknown and is an hidden gem of the internet fandom... if the song was to my taste... Then I enjoyed it.

Same goes for video games. I don't find video games over or underrated. Because, even though I read the ratings... I don't base my opinions on them. I enjoyed the game or I didn't. I read the ratings because its interesting to see the opinions of others and I respect those opinions. But they have no influence on my decision when buying a game and no influence on how I find a game.

I don't believe in the words Underrated or Overrated. The rating is a rating... It's the opinion of the reviewer or the masses. It may not be my opinion... I may have rated it differently... But that's his/her rating. So because if this... I can't really give what I feel is underrated or overrated. I can however give you what high rating game I disliked or what low rated or I enjoyed.

Disliked: Bioshock 2.
I understand it got high reviews though it does seem the internet disfavours this game so I don't know if this truely counts.
Now I didn't completely hate this game... However I got bored with it fast. I don't think I got past much of the beginning before turning it off. The game was feeling like a retread of the first game... Sort felt like it didn't need to exist. I was supposed to be a big daddy but I never really felt powerful like a big daddy... I just felt like a normal human. Maybe it gets better later on and that I should give it a better try... However I was just falling to sleep most way through it so I turned it off and haven't been arsed to put the game in since.

Liked: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

This game got average reviews from most critics and from what I've seen on the internet it's purely a Mileage May Vary game so I guess this counts as low rated.

I liked the game, it was flawed I'll admit. The sabre combat wasn't all that good. I felt like I was wielding a laser club rather than a lightsabre. The targeting was way off and could get annoying at times and the game was very short. However I enjoyed it. I though the game was ace. I loved the graphics, liked the maps and I also liked the arsehole potential you had in the game. I also really loved the story and the voice acting. I thought it was all ace in that department and is one of the few new things from the Star Wars universe that I'll consider cannon with the series.

Well that's my opinion any way. I'm sure I'll get quite a lot of flak for it and I'm doubting it's a popular opinion... However that's how I feel on the subject and I hope I'm not burnt at the stake for it.

Underrated:

Silent Storm. Everything in this game could be destroyed, and it had persistent damage to EVERYTHING. Bullet holes, bodies, scorch marks, everything all stuck around. I haven't seen any other game do this, even Max Payne 2 and Fallout 3 cleaned up after themselves. It's tactical combat is also very deep and wicked fun. The writing is shit, but everything else is cool.

Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy. This game is fucking awesome. If you still own a PS2 or Xbox, you should own this game. It's so fucking fun. Sneaking up behind dudes and popping their brain with your mind, taking control of a sniper and making him shoot his own allies, tossing shit around with telekinesis...it's AWESOME. The narrative is also awesomely STUPID, but no perfect game is perfect. And the last level is a *****.

Halo series (excluding ODST). Yes, I'm saying underrated. Halo is just plain fun. There's nothing wrong with it, unless you're talking about the narrative, and I'm not arguing about that. It's also a great party game. I haven't seen another FPS that's as party friendly as any of the Halo's. All you need for a 4v4 match is two copies of Halo and an Xbox. The same can not be said for CoD, or Rainbow Six.

Overrated: GoW. Fuck those games. I honestly prefer the combat of either Mass Effect (and I'm not unaware of the flaws in those games) over GoW. Call me strange, but it's true. And as you may have noticed, a shitty story doesn't prevent me from adoring a game, but something about Gears really, really, REALLY puts me off.

Intresting post and I'd have to agree with you on some aspects rather than others. One thing I really hate are numerical rating systems and not just cos zero p said it. When people come out and say well I give Tomb Raider 3 a 7 for sound. What! True certain aspects of games of games such as sound can really define a game (such as the wipeout series always comes with a reliably good soundtrack). The popularity of something makes it more or less culturally relevant and that effects how sequals will be developed and gives the franchise a direction. With an over-rated(-appreciated) game you feel a sense of injustice that something you think sucks balls is getting more attention than a more mature, developed or enjoyable game in your opinion. If you think Halo was crap not only is that an irritation but a problem it changed the way future games are made not just the halo series.

With the whole basing your opinions on other peoples. Yeah its unwise to let others opinions rule yours (although pyschological determinism but object to that last statement!) I do think its justifiable not to like something solely because everyone else does or love it and be the only one. When something becomes popular and people are over exposed to it you start seeing more and more flaws with it. Also the fact that its so accessible you see people liking it for very shallow reasons. Yes some things are popular because they're good but you only have to look at the music charts to see that isn't usually the case!

You are either in a minority or a liar when you say that other peoples opinions don't effect you. Personally I love a few mainstream games but hate most because they're shallow and frankly dull.

Also no i will not burn you at the stake

Overrated: All sports games, All games tagged as "Modern warfare" shooters (including Battlefield: Bad Company, which is pretty much the same as COD:MW), Fallout 3, Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV, Halo 3 and ODST, so on and so forth.

Underrated: Dark Sector, Blacksite: Area 51, Beyond Good and Evil...probably a few more that I can't think of right now but there's defnitely a lot.

I do agree that over exposure may start revealing flaws in the game as would prolonged playing of the game. However this doesn't often seem to be the cause of the hate in the game. Often it seems more of a "No body else likes it... So I'm not going to like it".

daftnoize said:

However those reasons don't matter to me. It's not directly affecting my gaming so why should it matter. Some one going "I likz CoD bcz mi m8's a 1 esle do" doesn't really affect my experience in the game. Good for him if that's his reason. Wasn't my reason... However if he just likes playing games because every one else does... Well that's up to him.
daftnoize said:

Well that's more of a question of taste. Some of the singles in the charts at the moment... I like. Some I hate. I don't care who else does or doesn't hate it... I just enjoy the song.
daftnoize said:

I never said other peoples opinions don't affect me. They just don't have any influence in what entertainment I do or don't enjoy. There opinions don't affect how much I'll like or hate a game or whether I'll buy it. Only my opinions affect that.

Opinions on other matters affect me... But not in my entertainment.

Overrated: FFVII, sooooo boring.
Underrated: I have 2:
FFX, Best FF ever.
Everything from the combat to the music was amazing. And what's all this crap about bad voice acting. What the fuck? It wasn't bad at all and even if it was who the fuck cares?
Dark cloud 2/Dark chronicle, best game ever.
The combat was amazing, the story was solid, characters were well done, good plot-twist...
I could be here for ages! Seriously, go play this game!
EDIT:
Mystery dungeon explorers of time/darkness/sky, best portable game.
Seriously that game drained days of my life.

That sentence destroys any credibility the rest of your post may have had. Those two games are night and day as far as gameplay and design philosophy go. If you had played either rather than jumping on the 'enough shooters already' bandwagon, you would know that.
