Overrated: Everything that gets a 10 from every mainstream reviewer looking to not piss off the crowd hailing it as the next messiah. Case in point, every GTA since 3.

Underrated: Final Fantasy 5 isn't particularly the best in it's series, but given the good GBA translation and its awesome soundtrack/job system it's a mystery why everyone looks past it. Also, Terranigma and Summon Night: Swordcraft Story.

That sentence destroys any credibility the rest of your post may have had. Those two games are night and day as far as gameplay and design philosophy go. If you had played either rather than jumping on the 'enough shooters already' bandwagon, you would know that.
This was more of an opinion than me trying to state a hard fact..in my eyes, i see all war games as similar. And I did actually give both a good chance to play through, I just never finished either. So yeah, they obviously have their differences that make them slightly seperate, but in my opinion (which is kinda what a forum is meant to do, get peoples' opinions), they're just too close to each other for me to give credit.

Plus I miss the huge battles from Battlefield 2...

GTA IV is vastly overrated. I remember reading reviews where they said it was liking living in another world! And an abundance of things to do doesn't count for anything when they're all shit.

I'd say that PoP: The Sands of Time is underrated. Sure, the combat's pretty shit, but the writing and characters are brilliantly written.

When something becomes popular and people are over exposed to it you start seeing more and more flaws with it.
I do agree that over exposure may start revealing flaws in the game as would prolonged playing of the game. However this doesn't often seem to be the cause of the hate in the game. Often it seems more of a "No body else likes it... So I'm not going to like it".

daftnoize said:
Also the fact that its so accessible you see people liking it for very shallow reasons.
However those reasons don't matter to me. It's not directly affecting my gaming so why should it matter. Some one going "I likz CoD bcz mi m8's a 1 esle do" doesn't really affect my experience in the game. Good for him if that's his reason. Wasn't my reason... However if he just likes playing games because every one else does... Well that's up to him.
daftnoize said:
Yes some things are popular because they're good but you only have to look at the music charts to see that isn't usually the case!
Well that's more of a question of taste. Some of the singles in the charts at the moment... I like. Some I hate. I don't care who else does or doesn't hate it... I just enjoy the song.
daftnoize said:
You are either in a minority or a liar when you say that other peoples opinions don't effect you.
I never said other peoples opinions don't affect me. They just don't have any influence in what entertainment I do or don't enjoy. There opinions don't affect how much I'll like or hate a game or whether I'll buy it. Only my opinions affect that.

Opinions on other matters affect me... But not in my entertainment.
Please don't take what I said too personally, its always nice finding someone with an intelligent and measured response.

Well since most of the overrated has been done already.

Underrated: CoC: Dark Corners of the Earth and The whole timesplitters series are the first that come to mind.

:D Don't worry... I didn't. Nor was my message supposed to sound nasty (I hope it didn't)... Here's a bit of advice for you. I know it's hard sometimes because you can't guess the voice in the post and you have to assume tone depending on the content of the post. However when reading most of my posts... Imagine a calm and happy voice. Don't worry, unless I've been really ticked off... I'm usually a calm fellow and I rarely post to offend anyone.

Overrated: Any Halo or CoD games. I still like them but they aren't that amazing.

Underrated: Naughty Bear. Its actually a lot of fun to just run around and kill other teddy bears. it can get a little repetitive but there are enough changes in enemies and weapons to keep things entertaining.

Overrated: Dragon Age (Don't get me wrong,It's a good game I like it a lot)

Underrated:persona 3,4 (Many people disregard these 2 because they're JRPG)
Fortunatly, Persona 4 is now getting overrated by many people thanks to Hiimdaisy live journal and the people who dubbed his comic of it. Though i suppose if i'd even known of its existance beforehand, i'd have loved it anyway (big JRPG fan... i've played all sorts)

In semi-agreement on DragonAge... it seemed to have something in common with marmite.

i'd have to say for Over-rated, Silent hill 2. I've been playing it recently, and sure, its very good (just like i expected) but i'm yet to be hit by its Brilliance that everybody seems to think it has (probably as they are heavily influenced by a certain hat-ed and beard-ed man and see it through special-magic-awesome looking glass)

and for Under-rated... i'm not sure actually. If i say "Golden Sun", then i'd probably be lying. almost everyone who's played it has loved it, its just not many people had the opportunity... so underplayed, but not under-rated.
again, can't say the same for Monster Hunter Unite, as only a few poeple have played that on this side of the world. Sure, a lot of people played tri, but that is pretty crap by comparison (better graphics, better weapon mechanics... absolutely nothing to pull you into the game at the start)... so Tri is probably under-rated as nobody got past the first very dull hour or so... probablh because they stretched what should have taken an hour into 3.

Okay, i can't decide an under-rated game ¬_¬

Overrated: Every sequel ever made?

Underrated: Beyond Good and Evil, The Void, Pathologic, Scratches, and maybe Prince of Persia 2.

Overrated:

The Gears of War series. Fun with a friend, but it gets dull fast, and is utterly lacking any sort of story.

Underrated:

AvP2, the first game tends to get all the love, but I personally think AvP2 is better. To this day I still lan the multiplayer.

Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader. Two of my favourite strategy games, they are not so much unknown as overlooked. The campaign in the first and the skirmish mode in Crusader are still, in my opinion, unmatched by any other strategy game.

Underrated: I think we can all agree that the underrated top spot goes to Okami, without question. It's one of the mose original, unique and addictive games you'll ever play.
totally Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, Beyond Good and Evil, Killer 7, Psychonauts, Eternal Darkness, no I'm not just listing games that Yahtzee has said he liked in the past. Indigo Prophecy, Mirror's Edge. and Viewtiful Joe also belong on the list

thanks for posting this, I had to get my FPS hatred out before I could read any posts but your comment calmed me down a great deal.
Really tempted to get mirrors edge now. Looked at some reviews its getting 5's and 6's that truely would be underrated

there were some collision detection Issues
and a massive loading problem, which has been patched, mostly
but other than that it's the most original game to come out in this generation
and it's only like $15 so why the hell not

Sorry, but that doesn't hold water to anyone who actually plays shooters. Sure, it's an opinion, but it's not a supported one and is also somewhat shallow. Now if you only play single player, I can see your point, but the Multiplayer structure plus weapon ballistics and design philosophy set them far apart. If you want to argue that Counter Strike and FEAR are the same game due to being modern shooters as well, I'll just shut up and watch from afar in detached amusement.

As for what you said about BF2, yeah, no argument there. That was a classic.

GTA series, Halo series after the first game, Uncharted is very mediocre (not Uncharted 2 which is awesome), God of War 2 and 3, Red Dead Redemption, Assassins Creed (especially AC2 which is worse than 1), CoD series (especially MW2)

Underrated and/or Under-appreciated:

Mirror's Edge (Best 3D platformer this gen), Heavenly Sword (much better than GoW3), ICO & Shadow of the Colossus, Mercenaries (best sandbox game ever, the sequel sucked though), Resonance of Fate, MAG (Best FPS this gen), Midnight Club 2 (best arcade racer ever), Hitman 2 (one of the best stealth games ever), SHADOW OF DESTINY (one of the best game stories on the PS2)
How is Heavenly Sowrd ( a ripoff of God Of War) better than God of War 2 and 3? I only played Mercs 2 and that game sucks ass. I don't see how the first could be better. Although some levels were cool to blow up the gameplay was repetitive and the story made no sense.

The only thing is I would get the steam release and with a quick google search apparently you can't get any dmc. Is the dmc worth it apparently the single player is on the rather short side

Wow, I thought I was the only one in the world who thought that Assassin's Creed 2 was worse than the first one.

Why did you think it was worse? For me it's because they tried to fix the repetitive crap by adding more repetitive crap to the game; and also the graphics (for some reason) were worse than the first one.
Assassin's Creed 2 is worst than the first game because it has NO CORE GAMEPLAY. The platforming isn't core gameplay, it's just how you get around; and the combat isn't core gameplay, it's what you do when you the guards catch onto you. The game is supposed to be about assassinating, and that aspect of AC2 is extremely weak and nearly nonexistent. In Assassin's Creed, they made the major assassinations fell like events; I'd say the assassinations in the first game were like playing Hitman-lite. Then, in the 2nd game, the main assassinations just feel like every other mission. I was hoping that Assassin's Creed would evolve more into a Hitman-like game (just for the assassinations obviously) and allow for more detailed assassinations that take some planning and stealth and have multiple ways to assassinate (like being able to poison, kill when sleeping, etc.); maybe take some things from the stealth portions of Batman:AA and some things from the Hitman series to make some really cool assassinations.

Heavenly Sword is much more entertaining and interesting because it has its own unique combat system where you have to switch stances, counter, and find the right combos to use against certain enemies to do well. GoW has pretty much the most basic combat system you can have, it worked fine in the first game, but now the system just feels so stale.

And, yes, Mercs 2 did suck ass. I bought Mercenaries 2 and hated it. I loved in the first game you can buy anything from the store anytime anywhere. If I wanted something one faction had, I had to go there to buy it in Mercs 2. On the whole, I just think the mission quality in Mercenaries 2 was a lot worse. In the first game, each mission seemed like a small section of a linear game where enemy placement is taken into consideration. And, in the first game, there were so many ways to do each mission; I loved finding ways to do each mission without pissing off the faction. Mercenaries seemed like it was composed of pieces from a linear game arranged on a big map whereas most sandbox games (like GTA) create the map/sandbox first then start making the missions, and mission quality takes a huge hit.
