You can't let the rabble know about their social status.
That would lead to class-consciousness.

We just did this thread the other day, so this is really easy:

Built mine for just over $600, if I remember correctly.

-EVGA 512-P3-N861-AR GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
-Antec earthwatts EA430 430W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.0 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX6000CZBOX - Retail
-G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK - Retail
-Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

I bought a cheap case and and extra fan, too. Already had a monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse, so that wasn't an issue.

It's not bad. Not top of the line, by any stretch, but it performs rather well.
Also, I know this would own a console.

HAHA!

Pentium 4 Dual Core (yeah, the first run of that chipset peeps)
4GB DDR2 (at least I've got that going for me)
400 GB Sata (partitioned)
Theermaltake V1 cooling system
Some kind of nifty BT mouse + keyboard combo (handy for the phone...)
And I saved the best for last:
Ati X700 Pro (and my power supply is actually a hampster running in a wheel...)

And I will take the award for crappiest gaming system still in use now...

I didn't put it together myself - bought a Dell last year and upgraded it a bit. Not the wisest choice I've ever made, but it's quite alright:

CPU: Core 2 Duo E7200 @2.53
RAM: 2 Gigs, I keep forgetting exact specs. Plus I need one gig more.
Video: HIS Radeon HD 4830
Mobo: Don't know (OEM). All I know is that Foxconn made it.
HDD: 320 Gig
