If you could create one game in your life what would it be like?
Would it be a Grand Theft Auto type where you go around getting chased by police?
Mercenaries 2 where you blow everything up?
Or even something like Little Big Planet where you create a masterpiece?
As my hobby, I'm actually working on creating a game that may take me my whole life. It is called:
Universe
I began work on it in 1989.
This beats Duke Nukem Forever which was begun in 1997.
The game is so large that I have spent the bulk of my time preparing to be in a position to program it.
I have as of this moment, designed an Integrated Development Environment, a Graphical User Interface, a Middleware Operating System Layer and an entirely new programming language in which all of this software will be written. So, that is the fruits of 20 years of sporadic off and on work in my spare time.
The game is kind of like Elite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_(video_game)
Mixed with Damocles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damocles_(computer_game)
Carrier Command: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_Command
Battle Engine Aquila: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Engine_Aquila
Planetside: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlanetSide
and Crysis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crysis
(whilst having rubbish graphics)
I would like it to be a MMORTSFPSRPG (massively-multiplayer real-time strategy first-person shooter role-playing game), but as I currently know next to nothing about networks - and only have one computer on which to test it - I will just have to make it an RTSFPSRPG at first.
If I ever finish and if anyone shows any interest in the game I may make the tools I used to make it available for open source extension by its community. The plan is for it to be freeware.
It is worth mentioning that there are other things out there broadly like it such as Infinity: The Quest for Earth:

This project is coming on leaps and bounds, because it has a lot of its models made for it by its community:

However, as I have already said my game is going to have rubbish graphics (think Damocles) as I would rather spend my time making really deep gameplay - like, being an alien mercenary who comes to land his spacecraft on a backward planet and sells his skills to the various sides of a Global conflict that has a historic and diplomatic background, loses his "special" equipment and is forced to fight with the technology of that planet (or may simply not want to draw that much attention to herself). That kind of thing.
Plenty of action, less of the boring mining and trading.
