I pick a 6 Mon party before I start a game.

I pick out their movesets, gender, and nature if I'm lucky.

So yeah.

Always have a Pokemon with the Pickup ability in my team, at ALL times. And teach that pokemon Return if it's a Normal type.

This makes it useful for getting items and battling. My Ambipom beat Clarie's last pokemon and got me my Gym Badge.

1- Teams must be researched in advance.

2- Teams must obtain an Arcanine as soon as possible.

3- Teams must have a variety of types, and no more than 2 pokemon can share a type, also no more than 2 types may be shared in the entire party.

4- Masterballs are used only on legendary Pokemon.

5- Pokemon in the team must be within 1 level of each other before attempting a Gym Leader or the Elite four.

6- Eggs must be hatched immediately, to see what's inside them.

7- Potions and other items are a luxury, and should be used only in dire emergencies. Items should be ignored all together if within 60 seconds of a pokemon centre.

Waterfall provides an excellent STAB for physical water types (such as Gyarados and Quagsire), without the downside of a two turn move (Dive). And strength on the right pokemon (whether it be for a STAB Normal type, or just a Physical type that needs moves and type coverage (cause normal hits for neutral on anything except ghost).

Other then that, Rock Smash and Cut are good early game moves (especially in blazeblack/voltwhite where Cut got bumped ten power and turned to a grass move). I know my meditite was rocking that Rock Smash for the STAB/Huge Power combo till it learned Force Palm in my pearl Nuzlocke.

OT:

Depends if Im nuzlocking, but for any gameplay, I try to have as many pokemon types as I can in the party, or at least type moves. If I can swing it I always get a Vaporeon (and since i got an AR, I started making it so I could get a vaporeon in the first grass area and use that as my starter), and always nickname your pokemon.

Yea those guys, they are your sacrifice, if you need to heal, switch to them and heal while they die, only use them for HMs, until you can get anything slightly good, replace them as soon as you can, and remember to abuse them verbally, constantly
Really, I used Simisage and he get's excellent type coverage once you get brick break & acrobatics.

My brother's golden rule? Don't ever, ever, EVER use healing items. If you do, you're the devil. And that's bad.

I cheat my ass off. I PAR in a team of my favorites, start them at level 1, and keep them the entire game. It is usually is a handful of dragons and a couple of psychics cause those are my favorites, and, of course, a Mew to pump all my HMs onto.

Yeah, it's probably not in the spirit of the game, but I have fun and I get more satisfaction raising my Giratina and Mewtwo from level 1 than getting them already at level 70 at the very end of the game.

I always have to level my team evenly. I can't have any one Pokemon more than one level above another.

First rule: The team must be the maximum 6 and each member must have its uses, otherwise abandon it.
Second rule: Must have at least 1 semi/pseudo-legendary. Whether that is a dragonite or mew one must be present.
Third Rule: Make sure you are prepared for any type of pokemon
Final Rule: All must have a combined stat level of over 500. This does severely limit the number of pokemon to choose from, but all pokemon chosen will be able to at least stand up on their own.
Supplementary Rule: Attempt to have at least 1 pokemon with ice type attacks or is an ice type for those pesky dragons. If all else fails get fucking Salamence!

1. Starter, never go for the Fire Type.
2. Get the Flying type you can find on the first route.
3. Get a Physic type(read Ralts/evos, or Abra/evos) as soon as possible.

Only 3 rules.

Never use the masterball, not even with the roaming legendaries
Its not a rule but i always seem to only use the starter until I get the legendary >.>

I haven't played the latest version of pokémon, but let me guess. Speak, hear and see no evil?

Anyway, to answer the question. I always pick grass pokémon first. They're the most mellow, they level the fastest, they have some really fast AND powerful attacks, they can learn a lot of artificial moves and the first gym leader usually uses rock and ground types, but never fire or ice. Grass is simply the best to go with.

1. Pick Cyndaquil if at all possible. If not, water starter.
2. Cheat and get an Aerodactyl.
3. Starter is always strongest. ALWAYS.
4. Zangoose is Baws.

Always use the your first Pokemon unless it faints. Train others a little if that happens

It's not something I force, I'm just lazy. I can't be fucked training anything else. My main is usually Lvl 70+ When I hit the league, so I'll use some great potions and have my other pokemon around 30, 30, 20ish, 5, 5 in level. Just long enough to use revive if need be. So yeah, my first pokemone will almost always beat every gym and the league on it's own

Also:

Never use a potion or antidote or anything unless it's in the league. It's not something I came up with, it's built in from the older games. The whole thought of "There's only x amount of gold in this game, which means there's only y amount of potions or balls I can buy, which means I should save them as much as I can"... so yeah, I go through the entire games on one pokemon and no potions =D

And it's fairly easy too

I never really paid attention to it until 5th genbut I always want to:
1:keep your starter always
2:pray that the ones you like aren't crap
3: if they are then too bad because for whatever reason I'm weirdly attached to them.

1. No starter Pokemon on the main team.
2. Every Pokemon must be given a nickname.
3. No Pokemon is sacred. Each team member can be replaced at a moment's notice.
4. Each team member must be the ideal representation of its species. Individual values that don't match up with a Pokemon's innate strengths will not fly.
5. Aesthetics take precedence over ability. It adds to the challenge when your visual favorites are less than ideal.
