well....
I've just wanted to ask about how much does it take for a better-versed person in English to type, or say.. compose, a complete post or to reply to a certain topic.
Being the non-native English speaker that I am, obviously.....
Mostly because, usually, it takes me around an hour to type on a 400 or so words reply...
and I just feel like that's terribly TERRIBLY slow.

I never took a typing class growing up, apparently being in the perfect "born in the late 80's" window where it was never required in any of my school years. As such, I don't type conventionally (I mostly use my index fingers), but I have spent enough time with computers that I type reasonably fast anyway. I definitely don't sweat my words per minute or anything like that; once you've signed on to communicate through text, you've already accepted the inherent slowness of it. Words-per-minute is only important if typing is actually your job, like a stenographer or something.

The last time I tested my type speed was about 80wpm (accounting for errors).

I wonder what it would be now...

Testing now...

According to this random site I went to (link won't work for some reason), I type at 92 wpm (no errors). I think that's a little off since the website shows what you're typing as you do it (so if you made a mistake, it lights up) but that sounds about where I should be.

Note: I went to http://typing-speed-test.aoeu.eu/ (I just Googled "typing speed test"; it's the third one in my search results if you don't trust strangers on the internet)

I never learned to type with 10 fingers, and taught myself through roleplay and online posting and such. So I mostly type with my index and middle fingers. If I know what to type beforehand, I can get about 30~40 wpm.

But really, it doesn't matter does it? Unless it's your job there is no need to type quickly.

I wrote this reply in a pretty short amount of time. Forty-three seconds. Thing is, it's not only about how fast you type, it's also a matter of how quickly you come up with what you want to say and picking the very best phrasing you can.

My general typing speed is around 70-80ish words per minute, or at least it was when I took a class in typing back in like...late middle school. If I was being sloppy with typing I could hit 90ish.

Maybe I am a good bit slower now, but I'm a little too self-conscious to find out. :p

Posting speed is predictably slower, since I have to figure out exactly what I really want to say, and then figure out how to express it in a way that won't earn me any ire from folks.

Tippy's link put me at 45 wpm, and that's with just my index fingers. I wonder how fast I would type if I learned 10 finger typing... Probably still rather slow.

I ended up in the 84-88 range after a couple mistakes on the thing tippy2k2 linked.

I always write out my thought process when posting, it's easier to see when I post on a thread more complex than this one. It doesn't always go well, I once wrote out my thought process so much I started a post disagreeing with someone then by the end of it I was agreeing with him. I never even noticed until he pointed it out later.

50WPM with 47 words right by the way, I've had to do loads of essays in my life so it's not hard for me to type line after line.

I'm a fair touch typist since I was totally self taught by doing all my assignments on computer when I was in high school and college. Also did some terrible, terrible amateur writing who's only benefit it would seem is my now decent typing speed.

On the link provided by tippy, after a few beers, I can manage 95 words per minute. Although, that is after both many, many years on the internet learning how to touch type, as well as classes at school, so I can imagine that being particularly accurate if I really wanted to go for it.

It kind of varies for me. I think I can typed on average but when I am "focus" as in knowing exactly what I'm going to typed, it's faster. In saying so when I was in this job agency, they tested my speed but they had a clunky old keyboard so the result was below average.

Index finger only (Except I use my pointer for Space), 97 wpm. Been typing since I was about 4 (Reader Rabbit, all right!) and I really wish I'd forced myself to learn to do 8-10 finger typing in some of these years. But I suppose this will be fine for a while longer..

EDIT: Native English speaker, for those that are curious.

It depends on how complex the discussion is, but as a rule I'm not too quick. I tried to time this post, but messed it up, It probably took 3-4 min. As an example I'll take a series of posts I made in succession. There were 1221 words and it took me 2 hours and 10 minutes, that's 9 words/min. It's not too far off from your 6 words/min.

Extremely slow and further limited by my brain's inability to efficiently come up with what to type.
