Do you have any problems you need help with? Do you think your fellow Escapists may be more useful than the people you hang out with? This is the place to talk about them. Any problems, ranging from the philosophical to "What should I have for dinner?"

I'll start by posing my current conundrum. I'm not doing so hot in some of my courses because I can't motivate myself to go to them. I don't know why, I keep telling myself the things I need to do, but I can't get myself to go. Any advice?

Serious questions and answers only please.

Do them, once you get started doing them again, it gets easier to stay doing them. I had a similar problem with my college work until recently. I just bit the bullet and did my assignment and now I'm just kind of "in the groove" of doing it again.

My problem isn't doing the work, that's easy. It's going to the class.

Go to class, it'll be easier to go to class after you do it once or twice again.

Depends-
Do you enjoy your courses?
Are these courses early/late in the day?
How accessible is the material?
Do you get exercise/eat right?
Do you get enough sleep?
Are you depressed?

I have the same problem. I actually withdrew from class and I am taking some time off. I couldn't manage to make it because of the fact that I also work about 40 hours a week.

Mine is doing the work. Finals are rolling up next week and I can't bring myself to finish my papers that are due. Damn Thanksgiving break. It really set me into the mood of Christmas break for that whole month >_< Blah. I'm gonna sit down and do them eventually, but I much rather it be sooner rather than the night before.

If you don't plan on doing the work for a while at least make a plan of how you will do it.

Considering/planning in advance is different from procrastination.

EDIT: Also making a plan will gear you up for doing the work. Can sometimes make you decide to start sooner (similar in going to class). Plus a plan will help with logistics problems before they happen.

Well, a lot of the problem arises from your first and second questions. The course that really ruined it was my Latin class, which was at 9 in the morning Monday- Thursday, and was packing the same information we covered in two school years in high school int o a single semester, and my professor was unforgiving. I used to go every day, and every time I went we had more things to memorize and I couldn't get the stuff before. It's like giving someone a pile of rocks to lift, and every time they lift it halfway you put another armful on top.

Very true. I usually do plan things out. I guess I can't really complain since I'm going to do it eventually.

Yea I did exactly the same in my degree. If I could give myself some advice back then it would be:

"WORK YOU IDIOT!"

You think you actually remember the good times at uni, well you do but most of them I would happily exchange for better results.

What I recommend is that you talk to people in your class about it and how they find it. Try and find an interesting twist on the subject. Go and see your student guidance whoever and tell them about it, they should be able to help.

Also, ask your tutor if there are any particularly comprehensive or easy to understand books on the subject. First things first, isn't it better to get it sorted than to worry about it. Sooner or later you're going to have to bite the bullet and get it done or fail.

I had the same problem back in High school, but I found that I did my best work on essays and the like on the night before it was due.

I used to do it the night before as well in high school, not very good work ethic if you ask me. I also believed that it was better work the night before, but then I started doing it earlier and if you proofread after you are done a day or two later, you realize just how incoherent and if it doesn't flow along with many other problems.

Well, I actually got better grades and wrote better when I did it the night before. The essays I planned out and proofread turned into incomprehensible crap.

In this case I'd recommend different study habits then. Memorization is hard for me. I try to take what I learn and put it in context.

At class I'd usually make metaphors from the material, or try to restate the idea for different views.

Well, that's the problem. It's a foreign language class, so the entire thing is memorization.

I've learned a bit of several languages. The way that I do it is not rote memorization.

I try to build a connection between the word and situations.

Example French Vocab:
Ordinateur: Computer
Travaille: Work/Job
Utiliser: to use
Visiter: to visit

Quand je visite ma travaille je utilise mon ordinateur.
When I visit my work I use my computer.

It takes extra time for studying, but in certain situations it can be quite easy. Study groups are great for languages since you can work everything you're learning into conversation.
'Tu me prends le bouteille de l'eau SVP.'
Please pass me the water bottle.

Yeah, but it still just involves memorization in the end. I mostly just suck with languages other than English. Oh well. And I personally don't use study groups, because it doesn't help me learn.

I still recommend study groups. It's the next best thing to dating someone fluent in the language.

I've used a similar excuse, but eventually I noticed that it varied from subject to subject. Generally if I'm having trouble with a subject then a group environment helped. Otherwise I studied by myself.
