I'll support a somewhat limited form of Capitalism. There needs to be a government to keep on eye on the capitalists to ensure that they don't gang up in one big monopoly or cartel or hire mercenaries or whatever and just compete against each other for the benefit of the consumers.

After all, the whole point of Capitalism is that any corporate cog is ultimately expendable the moment it fails to perform, whereas in the Socialist system the government monopoly just bulks bigger and bigger no matter how bad it gets.

In other words, the socialist humanitarian government should understand and support the cutthroat capitalist economy so that everyone can benefit.

I think people fail to realize the USA is not a pure capitalist society. It is capitalism mixed with socialism. Which I think is fine and lets keep it that way because it has made us awesome.

Seeing how Capitalism has enough money to buy both Communism and Socialism, I say that it's pretty damn great!

you're entire post was complete point of view but i'm gonna focus on this part because i particularly don't care for paris hilton. she, like any other person, was born with the same rights and opportunities as everyone else, just like her parents were and that kid from columbia. that's what it means to be created equal. everybody has the opportunity to get what's needed in order to be prosperous.

I like it, it allows me to make above average income by working smarter, not necessarily harder.

Having pure capitalism with no government to keep people in check is anti-democratic. This is because the rich get to powerful and start control the country for their own gain. This is why Socialism is better because it stops the rich from grounding to powerful and keeps the people in power.

My thoughts on Capitalism? Great game series, and its sequel, Capitalism II, is one of the best business sims ever made. Trevor Chan did a great job on the design.

...what?

I think a mix would be ideal.

The kind of control the government was able to have over the economy during FDR's administration proved to help quite a bit.

I think a similar level of control would benefit the economy. The way it is now, greed is overpowering and people have no regard for the overall health of the market. The current recession is the logical effect of that greed.

i prefer socialism. i still want to try hard but i find the fact that people who have miserable jobs just to pay for...well...nothing... is pathetic.

People think that low end jobs are the peoples own fault when the simple fact of the matter is only so many can win. What about the other people who busted their ass? They are a lost cause. The economy had us playing musical chairs with each other to find out whos on the street with nothing and who has a decent living.

People are also often mistreated because all it takes is a "your fired" and you have a whole series of problems. Some say that things get worse before they get better but more often then not, those who are terminated or are laid off, dont find a job for a good amount of time.

The believe of ones own faulty life is because of their OWN actions is popular but highly untrue. Americas system sells out the american publics dignity with low wages, bothersome schedules, fewer sick and vacation days.

I've said I could stand to be taxed more heavily, as long as it's doing something useful (but that's the trick, isn't it). Our current system doesn't satisfy my sense of equity (but then I may be a 95 percentile there).

Every area?

Other AFAIKs that come to mind:
Our life expectancy is similarly unimpressive.
We spend more on health care per capita than anyone.
Our education scores are lagging.
Massive deficit and debt.
We've made enemies.

Certainly it's not all bad news here. Decent place to live. But careful with the Cold War propaganda...

Was he? >_<
Don't know the guy, couldn't tell. Figured he was, I dunno, a staunch Republican. Who grew up in the cold war. And decorates his den with dead Russian bears.

Adam Smith had it right the first time. The problems with capitalism in practice stem from inconsistent implementation - it doesn't really work when your society is only mostly capitalist, just like a diet doesn't really work if you only 'mostly' stop shoving your face full of ice cream and french fries.

And for the record: FDR was one of the worst things to ever happen to the USA and his rubber stamp with congress did jack to actually 'fix' the depression (so sayeth modern economists). Our current massive federal government, swollen far far beyond the intended constitutional balance of powers, with all it's pointless and wasteful departments that have nothing at all to do with the core functions of government (prevent anarchy, keep other nations from rolling in and taking all your stuff) can largely be attributed directly to good old FDR and his New Deal, oh boy!

In case you haven't guessed by now, the phrase "This should really be handled by the private sector and not by government bureaucracy" is a personal favorite which I trot out quite often - people have this entirely unwarranted impression that the government is supposed to be something other than a system that we only need because with perfect freedom we'd either be killing other people and taking all their stuff, being killed and having all our stuff taken, or paranoid and armed to the teeth. As Hobbes pointed out so very accurately, life in the state of nature (perfect freedom) is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short".

How we moved from necessary restriction of your freedom to we should be providing everything you need from the cradle to the grave! is frankly a mystery to me.
