I don't think I can come up to 10 different FPS games -.-
I'll just write the ones I've played here.
No particular order.

Counter Strike
Far Cry Vengeance
Alien vs Predator
Halo
Halo2
Duck Hunt
Goldeneye James Bond

These are the ones I've actually played, of course I've tried Modern Warfare and Battliefield and also Halo 3 when drunk I guess but not enought to count as actually have played them...

after the top two there not in any order and ive probably forgot some but off the top of my head

quake 2 ctf (this was the big one when i was young and had reflexes and played at top levels so its always going to be my number 1)

left for dead (both)
borderlands
bio shocks
half lifes
crysis
serious sams!
max payne (all)
doom 1/2 but NOT 3!

im tempted to put red faction guerilla in but it doesnt earn its place from the fps part so i guess ill leave it as a ps.

edit- surprising amounts of dooms, quakes and wolfensteins in the lists is that people just being credible or are that many of us really that old? ;)

1) Half Life
2) Portal
3) Bioshock
4) Deus Ex
5) Half Life 2
6) Portal 2
7) Goldeneye
8) Battlefield 1942
9) Crysis
10) James Bond: Everything or Nothing (One of the first not to copy a movie. I think they pulled it off)

Goldeye ranked low because I'm not much into FPS online vs. I do respect its pivotal role in gaming.

From most to least...

Battlefield 1942
Rainbow Six 3
Half-Life
No One Lives Forever
Tribes
Ghost Recon
Brothers in Arms
Halo
BioShock
Portal

I'd love to have put Jedi Knight 2 on here, but to me it's not a shooter. Deus Ex fought for a place on the list as well, but in the end I think of it more as an RPG than an FPS.

I've been spoiled by the internet too long. I meant multiplayer for Goldeneye. I can do it, but I find the story suffers dramatically in multiplayer/online FPS. Which why I mainly buy a game in the first place.

1) Call Of Duty: World At War - Zombie map packs sealed the deal for me.
2) Halo 3 - Had fun with the forge and custom game modes, would have been same for Reach but me friends got bored of it or didn't buy it.
3) Battlefront II - You can put it in First Person View
4) Doom - First played it on my Uncles GBA and bought it for the XBox, amazing game in my opinion.
5) Halo 2 - Played it round a friends house while online was still an option, awesome.
6) Modern Warfare 2 - Played countless hours on it, and it was fun
7) Time Crisis 2 & 3 - Irresistible urge to play them when I see them in an arcade.
8) Point Blank - Just pure fun
9) Medal Of Honour: Frontline - Stepbrothers game when I first moved in to his house, twas good.
10) Perfect Dark - Played it round my friends when I was younger, although I lost all the time, it was still good to play.

Um... I don't play well with others? Goldeneye became famous for its Multiplayer (up to four players was unheard of at the time) and I tend to play alone. I don't like playing with others in vs matches.

Hmmm... My top 10 FPSs games. That's a tough one. Let's see...

My Personal FPS Hall of Fame

1. ArmA II - I have lost countless hours in the editor, and the campaign really shines in full, four person co-op. Despite some bugs and flaws within the engine, it's still a solid game. Did I mention the amazing modding community? They are second to none!

2. Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis + All expansions - I had never felt truly proud and privledged to have beaten a game in my life until I completed both the Nato and Resistance campaigns. I spent a month on one mission alone. Yes, it can be that hard. It also laid the framework for the ArmA series and set the standard in mil-sim gaming.

3. Tribes 2 - Jetpacks and spinfusors. 'Nuff said. I have Tribes Ascend, and I have yet to dive in. I really need to give it a shot, but I am afraid it won't be as awesome as Tribes 2 was. Some of my best moments in FPS multiplayer took place on this game.

4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - I am going to include the whole series here. The atmosphere is incredible, and the sense of immersion is very strong when spending hours wandering the waste of The Zone. I also have to nod to the incredible modding community for keeping S.T.A.L.K.E.R. alive by creating some amazing mods and total conversions.

5. FarCry - I fell in love with this game when I built my first gaming PC back in the early 2000s. It has beautiful visuals even by today's standards, and it's a solid FPS that is still fun to play. Oh, and the editor that it comes with is also quite nice.

6. Wolfenstein 3D - This was my first FPS. However, I have grown up a lot since then. Still, it carries a special place in my heart. It was also my second PC game!

7. Medal of Honor (2010) - In a world dominated by the CoD franchise, it's nice to see the original PC military FPS franchise make a return, or at least, the franchise that pre-dates CoD. I enjoyed this game. It had a focus on the characters and the reality of war (as best as one can convey such things in a game). I found it more believable than CoD, and it was far more enjoyable for me.

8. Crysis - I don't care what anyone says. This game is tons of fun! I also enjoyed the story; even if it's a little cliche.

9. ArmA: Combat Operations - This game was ok. Yes, I am a mil-sim fan, but even Bohemia Interactive admitted tha this game was more of a tech experiment than anything, and they didn't really put their heart and soul into it. The combat is fun, and the missions are still tough, but better things definately came of this game.

10. F.E.A.R. - I was a beta tester for this game, and I was a very active member of the community (there's a (digital) fan-made F.E.A.R. snow shovel with my screen name on it out there somewhere). This game has been a long time favorite. The horror was genuine, and the plot was creepy for more reasons than one. Too bad it was the only truly great game of the series.

My personal FPS Hall of Shame

1. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising - This game made a mockery of the Operation Flashpoint name. In fact, I usually just refer to it as, "Dragon Rising," so it's not confused with a good game like Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. Codemasters broke so many promises here. The campaign was quite linear, and the player was punished for straying too far off mission. Overall, the game discouraged the exploration of the game world, and the player's decisions didn't feel like they had any real impact on the future of the campaign.

I will also mention that the MP was pretty bad.

2. Wolfenstein (2009) - This game could have been great, but it was held back by the fact that it was developed mainly for consoles. There were very few options for optimization, and the campaign felt half-baked. I wanted to like it, I really did, but I just could not get into this game. The world felt very compartmentalized, and the story seemed to progress slowly.

3. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Franchise - I just can't see what all of the fuss is about. I enjoyed the first Modern Warfare game, but after that, things just got ridiculous. The campaign wasn't believable at all, and the MP is not the engaging. I feel like I am playing an arcade game when I play, and the servers are usually packed with whining kids. That's been my experience anyway. I just can't take those games seriously.

I'm not really into FPSs all that much so I'm gonna have to stretch the meaning of First Person Shooter to reach 10 if you don't mind. I'll have to include Fallout 3, which I never play in first Person but most people do from what I see in this list.

1.Fallout 3 (Never played this in 1st, and it prob wouldn't rate so high if I didn't have the option not to)
2.S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl (this probably wouldn't rate so high if I didn't play it so much in the last 2 or 3 days)
3.Timesplitters: Future Perfect
4.TES IV: Oblivion (unlike fallout I usually did play this in 1st Person because the 3rd Person Camera was awful, but I never really used bows so I never did much shooting but I'm really stretching to get to 10 here, gimme a break)
5.Condemned: Criminal Origins
6.Far Cry 2
7.Killzone 2
8.Doom 2
9.Medal Of Honor: Rising Sun
10.Black
Those last 6 aren't really in order, I was just trying to think of FPSs that I really liked. Trying to order them properly would be really too hard.

EDIT: Fuck, I forgot Hexen until I saw this

I wouldn't count the Fallout series as one of my favorite FPS' myself as the shooting in it was quite crappy, it just did other things a lot better.
Totally off topic, but I recognise your avatar, you don't by any chance use the username /b/rother on the Facepunch forums? Its a pretty unique avatar so it's probably worth asking.

In no particular order:

--Half-Life 2
... do I really need to explain this one?
[small]Don't answer that. I know there are a few of you out there who would love to claw at my throat claiming HL2 is overrated trash, but seriously I love this game to death.[/small]

--Left 4 Dead 2
The co-op FPS perfected. Although it can be frustrating to play with random people due to the whole "some people don't know what teamwork means" thing, gather up some buddies and you have something you can have fun with for hours.

--Doom
Nearly 20 years after its release, and running around at the speed of light blasting demons in the face with a shotgun is still so much fun. And while the sequel was pretty damn awesome too, the original still was the better and more memorable of the two in my eyes.

--Timesplitters: Future Perfect
What do you get when you mix solid gameplay, great level design/variety, and a story that is part actually interesting and part freakin' hilarious? You get awesomeness in disk form. Oh, and the multiplayer and level editor are awesome too, but that's common knowledge by now...

--Sven Co-op
Fun weapons, a massive variety of custom maps ranging from serious levels to just fun places to mess around, plus there's no true limit on how many people you can have playing together? Best. Multiplayer mod. EVAR.

--Serious Sam: TFE/TSE
I include both since they kindof are the same game, minus a few differences here and there. And in the end, they are the Doom-ish formula of "run around and shoot everything that moves" mixed with massive, open environments that lead for some of the most epic battles you will ever experience in an FPS. And you can play them co-op. It rarely gets better than this...

--Call of Duty: Black Ops
Yeah, you heard me. Black Ops. Yes, CoD 4 was technically the best game in the series, and CoD 1 and 2 were flippin' amazing games as well. But Black Ops will always be the one I had the most fun with, and "Had the Most Fun With" >>>>>>> "technically better" in my eyes.
[small]... I regret nothing, either!![/small]

--Rise of the Triad: the Dark War
I never played this one until recently, and wow was I missing out on a hell of an underrated classic. Yeah, it was still running on a modified Wolfenstein 3D engine at a time when Doom was all the rage. And yeah, the levels are pretty damn mazelike and can be annoying. But the soundtrack is awesome, the weapons are awesome, the powerups are awesome... dammit, the game's awesome!

--Goldeneye 007
Also another game that just goes without saying. And yeah, it is rather outdated and Perfect Dark was truly better in every way too. But still, few other games had split-screen multiplayer that was as fun as this one. Plus, the single player was a lot of fun too, if a bit overly hard at spots.
[small]...having to defend Natalia in the control center... *shudders*[/small]

--No One Lives Forever
Still one of the absolute funniest games I have ever played, plus it was a damn good FPS with a fantastic setting in its own right. While the stealth missions could get a bit annoying in places, the hilarious dialog and fun cast of characters made it all worth it in the end.

OK, so when you say vs matches, are you against splitscreen multiplayer, online multiplayer against people far away, or both? Goldeneye was just the former, not the latter.

And hey- the people who said Goldeneye was all about the multiplayer weren't the ones that own a copy- I haven't touched Goldeneye multiplayer in over 10 years- it's the singleplayer we're all still playing all these years later ;)

Its all that in general. FPS shooters that are multiplayer/online/ any form of player vs player usually bores me to death.

Indeed, it is why it made my list.
