hmm..

well overall

id say mass effect 1 (2 was epic, but 1 sent shivers down my spine like no other)

kotor (this game had my jaw dropped on the twist, then i had a splurge of nerdgasm awesomeness)

and strangely enough i might have to say battlefront 2, i played the single player/conquest part of that game so damn much, straight up someone would think im training for the return of the sith or some shit.

In no particular order:
The World Ends With You
Metroid Prime (the first one)
Portal

Honorable Mentions:
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker
Assassin's Creed 2

Coincidentally, these constitute may overall favorite games. There's something about multiplayer games, even the best out there, that prevents me from considering them as great games.

I've already mentioned all of these on the site, but despite my rather static choices I'll share the list in case someone out there cares :p

1. Morrowind: I simply adore the creative world Bethesda crafted, and I've never had trouble with bugs in this particular iteration of their sandbox. I've put well over 1,000 hours into exploring vanilla Morrowind, and with mods included it can only go up from there.

2. Dwarf Fortress: Nothing out there comes even close to the ambition of this game. If you can get over reading things in ASCII, some of the richest worlds around are available in near infinite number. Projects that encourage emergent gameplay fascinate me(see also: Mount & Blade) and this freebie is no different.

I gladly donated to its creator. It's hard to believe with all the possibilities already out there, it has only a third of the planned features.

3. Riven: Forget Shadow of the Colossus. This title is my chief argument against Mr. Ebert's immortal claim. It's a visual treat with a rich story, and now it's available on Steam, too.

Good Question...

Morrowind, of course.
Mass Effect
And yea, I'll just lump every good Zelda game into my last entry.

The three best single player games of all time. That's a difficult question, but I'll give it a go.

<color=red>Kingdom Hearts 2
Where to even begin for KH2? The stunning variety of worlds and characters? The superb combat system? The customization and plotline? This game had it all, and I'll remember it forever.

<color=red>Minecraft
Ah, Minecraft. I considered not putting this on the list, since it's not even in beta yet, but the game is glorious. Your adventures in it can last forever, your experiences simultaneously daunting and conquerable. A simple quest to get a bit of sand to make some glass can lead to the discovery of a tremendous cave system, a stunning vista, or a pack of deadly monsters, or perhaps all three. The game lasts as long or as short as you want to play it for however long you have to play. Plus, there will be so much more as time goes on. Indie gaming at its finest.

<color=red>The Witcher
This is how you make a plot-based RPG, full stop. From the in-depth character customization to the wondrous setting, story, characters, creatures, and more, The Witcher is a great example of what happens when everything happens correctly in game design. Well, the combat designers may have took a few too many coffee breaks, but that's the only flaw in an otherwise amazing game.

1st: Final Fantasy X
Simply because of the storyline and character development.

2nd: Starcraft II
Same as above, and because of the awesome, well designed gameplay.

3rd: Legend of Zelda
Simply because I like this series so much. All of these games on the N64 and Gamecube (including Twilight Princess) are well designed and have an epic-ness factor to them along with the fact that they are not completely hack and slash.

Honorable mention:
Final Fantasy 7, 'nuff said.

Yes I am a jrpg fan, and I'm proud of it.

Guess my list looks a bit like this:

1) Bioshock 1+2
Just awesome games, combining both an interesting and thought provoking story with awesome gameplay, great lvl design, and probably THE BEST atmosphere in a game i have seen in a long time. Also, who didn't shit their pants when they heard the first Big Daddy coming? i was pretty damn close :p

2) Simcity 4 (AND DON'T EVEN MENTION SOCIETIES! ruined the series :()
Boy have i used a lot of time on that game... There's just something about seeing your city go from farmlands to skyscrapers and hightec industries, and when you actually make a city bigger than the one you live in.. absolutely amazing game.

3) Portal
Again, a cool and thought provoking story, great wit, and some great challenges.

Other runner-ups include: Red Alert genre, for its awesome humor, Oblivion, mostly due to its huge moddability, and a heck of a lot other great games.

3 - Devil May Cry: Fun introduction to Dante and his world. Love the in-game cut scenes. Enjoying watching others do combos I never thought of and then trying to replicate said combos (and failing). Overall, it just makes me happy.

2 - Manhunt: Only the first few levels, not a complete play-through. It's a twisted bit of fun to toy with the crazies, watch each detailed death and listening to Brian Cox taunt you throughout the game. Once it turns into a gun focused game, hate every second of it. Had to watch a friend fight Pigsy cause I couldn't stand playing through the gun fights.

1 - Shadow of the Colossus: Cinematic feel is everything here. Music, camera (though frustrating at times), design...*sigh* I can play this game any day.

Honorable Mention: Ico...great game and story, but going through some of the puzzles over and over again keeps me from really replaying this one.

Oblivion
Fallout 3
Mass Effect 2

def the first 2 because of the sheer amount of mods that you can install gives the games hundreds of hours of replay value, and ME 2 just because its so awesome!
