Since it seems to be the time of year now for annual recaps of stuff and The Escapist's editors are doing it for games and Bob's doing it for movies, I figured why not. The thing is though, you don't have to pick games or movies if you don't want to, pick whatever you want. Games, movies, books, board games, personal accomplishments, Escapist videos, news articles, tv shows, failed apocalypse predictions, anything really.
Basically you get to add your two-cents to whatever topic you want, and maybe others will see something they missed and might interest them. For instance, I voted for ME 3 for GOTY, mainly because it was the only game on the list that I've played (though I did really enjoy it), but after reading some people's comments and the editor's top 5's, I'm going to have to check out The Walking Dead. I'm just usually pretty behind when it comes to gaming and by the time I get around to playing a game, it's probably a different year from the one it came out in. So maybe top 5 games you actually played for the first time this year even if they didn't come out.
So anyway, give us your top 5 (or it could be 3 or 7 or 10, I don't really care) whatever of 2012.
I'm going to go with movies (feel free to go with more than one thing).
5) The Hobbit - Just saw this one, a little slow getting started, but once it started it was quite a ride.
4) Cabin in the Woods - I feel like this is how you make a genre parody movie. It's good as a parody, it's good a horror movie. It's just good.
3) Skyfall - I'm a Bond fan and this one really worked for me. I was disappointed after Quantum of Solace, but this one redeemed things.
2)The Secret World of Arrietty - I'm going with something different for this one. In a world of 3D and CGI, it's nice to see a good hand drawn animated movie. Studio Ghibli has made some classics, and I really enjoyed this one.
1) The Avengers - Kind of a no-brainer. If you've enjoyed the Marvel superhero movies of late then this was certainly a crowning achievement.
Honorable mentions - Looper, Chronicle, The Raid: Redemption.
Perhaps it's kind of a bland paint-by-numbers list, but I'm not really one for "film". I like movies and I go to be entertained.
Anyway, have at it.
