Since it seems to be the time of year now for annual recaps of stuff and The Escapist's editors are doing it for games and Bob's doing it for movies, I figured why not. The thing is though, you don't have to pick games or movies if you don't want to, pick whatever you want. Games, movies, books, board games, personal accomplishments, Escapist videos, news articles, tv shows, failed apocalypse predictions, anything really.

Basically you get to add your two-cents to whatever topic you want, and maybe others will see something they missed and might interest them. For instance, I voted for ME 3 for GOTY, mainly because it was the only game on the list that I've played (though I did really enjoy it), but after reading some people's comments and the editor's top 5's, I'm going to have to check out The Walking Dead. I'm just usually pretty behind when it comes to gaming and by the time I get around to playing a game, it's probably a different year from the one it came out in. So maybe top 5 games you actually played for the first time this year even if they didn't come out.

So anyway, give us your top 5 (or it could be 3 or 7 or 10, I don't really care) whatever of 2012.

I'm going to go with movies (feel free to go with more than one thing).
5) The Hobbit - Just saw this one, a little slow getting started, but once it started it was quite a ride.
4) Cabin in the Woods - I feel like this is how you make a genre parody movie. It's good as a parody, it's good a horror movie. It's just good.
3) Skyfall - I'm a Bond fan and this one really worked for me. I was disappointed after Quantum of Solace, but this one redeemed things.
2)The Secret World of Arrietty - I'm going with something different for this one. In a world of 3D and CGI, it's nice to see a good hand drawn animated movie. Studio Ghibli has made some classics, and I really enjoyed this one.
1) The Avengers - Kind of a no-brainer. If you've enjoyed the Marvel superhero movies of late then this was certainly a crowning achievement.

Honorable mentions - Looper, Chronicle, The Raid: Redemption.

Perhaps it's kind of a bland paint-by-numbers list, but I'm not really one for "film". I like movies and I go to be entertained.

Anyway, have at it.

I'll do a top 4 games, because I don't want to spoil my movie list. :p

My top 4 games of 2012:

Pokemon Conquest: Easy, sure, but I sunk so many hours into it and it's still fun for me to pick up and play.
MLB 12: The Show: I love the Show series, and this one is better than all the ones before it.
The Walking Dead: Most emotional game I've ever played.
Borderlands 2: Technically here by default because I don't think I played any other '12 games this year. But it's still a very fun game.

Top 5 things that I enjoyed this year (not limited to "produced in 2012" just stuff that I enjoyed)

I loved watching this anime a lot. I whole-heatedly recommend it to anyone as long as you can take some pretty stupid and cliched dialogue at times.
What could be better than a giant real-time environment where every single thing in the battle is another person instead of some bot? well, if you find it, tell me! The only thing marring this is the fact that my mid-western internet connection prevents me from actually doing good.
Thanks to being in college and boredom, I got back into watching anime. I had heard of this one before and had it recommended to me several times. It did not disappoint. It was a thrilling and suspenseful ride that kept me guessing at what would happen next and the reason why stuff happened.
This is a nostalgia trip on my own part, having watched this during its original run. I had honestly forgotten about this series until a few weeks ago when something flashed into my mind about it. That then sent me on a journey through wikipedia that ultimately led me to the series in question. It is good, REALLY good.
FTL(faster than light)

HOLY SHIT I LOVED THIS GAME. My current playtime on it, according to steam, is 71 hours and every single one was soul-crushingly enjoyable. This is not, however, my game of the year. It is, however, what I enjoyed most. Now if only I could unlock the mantis ship and the mystery ship and their respective alternate layouts I could call this game done.
Farcry 3 - GOTY for me, if only to get more games like it in the future.
Minecraft, Feed the Beast Modpack - still playing minecraft, my favorite game of all time.
Fallout, New Vegas - Picked it up for cheap in a steam sale, loved it.
Nichijou - incredibly random, my style of choice for comedy. also, I have ALL THE GIFS on my computer.
Wreck it Ralph - Needed more cameos
The Avengers - its the frickin avengers, its awesome!

I'll be unoriginal and do films:

5. Cloud Atlas. The sheer scale of that film was simply staggering.

4. Cabin in the Woods. Great play on the horror genre.

3. The Hobbit Pt 1. An incredibly fun return to Middle-Earth.

2. The Avengers. Joss Wheddon knows how these superhero movies should work.

1. Django Unchained. Every performance in this film blew me away. Foxx, Waltz, DiCaprio... The whole film was stellar from start to finish for me (Although Tarantino may need to work on his Aussie accent a little). QT has been one of my favorite directors over the years, and he has not failed to impress me as of late. Bravo.

Since I only played five games this year, saw one movie, read no books, watched no TV, and am boring, I guess I'll just go with the games.

5. Darksiders 2- I actually haven't finished it since I just got it during this sale, but I also played the first this year, really liked it, and I'm loving this one even more. It does get pretty tedious in this second act, though.

4. Sleeping Dogs- Just finished it yesterday, best GTA I've played since 4. I wish it was maybe twice as long though. Not enough time to really get to know everyone outside of the first small group.

3. Far Cry 3- Got it on Christmas day and finished it that night. For reference, it took me several attempts over two years to get through Far Cry 2, even though I'm one of the people that likes it, but this game scratched an open-world itch I've had since burning out on Skyrim.

2. Walking Dead- It's my other GotY. I don't think there's anything I can say that hasn't already been said. It was also the second game to make my cry. What was the first?

1. Mass Effect 3-

Thanks for the pictures. I have no idea about cat breeds so I had no idea what they actually were until I saw the pictures.

I don't know what a football league kit is. Judging by the pictures, I'm assuming it's the uniform? I don't watch soccer or know much about it (as likely illustrated by me calling it soccer).

Thanks to Netflix, I have a vast untapped resource of television that I can finally get into. So here are my top 5 tv shows that I discovered this year and really wished Netflix wasn't always a season behind.

-Game of Thrones-Okay, this isn't really on Netflix, but my dad owns the first season. So I'm more behind than most on this one, but it's pretty damn cool. Not sure when I will be able to catch season 2, though.

-The Walking Dead-God damn zombies. They are fucking everywhere now and I am so sick and tired of them. Unless they are done like this. Really looking forward to season 3.

-How I Met Your Mother-Probably the best comedy on tv for a few years from seasons 1-5. 6 and 7 have begun to show the series' age, I'm afraid, but it's still funny and I am very interested to see how this experiment in comedic storytelling is going to end.

-Breaking Bad-I was surprised to find that it is very nearly as good as the hyperbole suggests. One final season, almost a year to wait for it. Balls.

-Sherlock (BBC show)-Okay, this is actually up to date with what has been produced, but it's on the list because every fan is waiting for season 3. It's been literally a year since season (or series, if you want to get all British about it) 2 aired, and there is no sign of the next coming any time soon. So Steven Moffat and the BBC can suck my balls, and hurry up with it already!

I'm not on that list? You wound me!

Top 5 Video Game Characters Introduced in 2012:

5 - Eve (Mass Effect 3) - Interesting character who gave a new perspective on a culture we thought we knew. Bold, smart and heroic. What video game heroins should aspire to be.
4 - Labrys (Persona 4 Arena) - A compelling and brave robotic girl who suffers a horrible tragedy in her past and learns how to deal with that pain. Her accent gives her a lot of personality too!
3 - Clementine (The Walking Dead) - Telltale made me care about a little girl to the point of man tears. Nuff' said.
2 - Neloth (Skyrim: Dragonborn DLC) - Technically he is a returning character from Morrowind, but he's essentially been completely re-imagined and takes on a prominent role in the story (as opposed to his minor role in Morrowind). He's a fucking riot and brings a lot of life to the addon.
1 - Lee (The Walking Dead) - He's a motha fuckn' balla.

Also, my favorite entertainment I paid money for this year. Also in no order.

-The Hobbit-Loved it, loved it all, it delivered exactly what I wanted: a return to Middle-Earth in the manner to which Peter Jackson is accustomed. I loved every minute of it, all the slow moments, all the lore building, all the scenery porn, everything was just what I hoped for.

-Borderlands 2-Also just what I hoped for, Borderlands but with everything improved. More loot, more characters, more jokes, better story (really impressed by how good the story actually is), more areas, more enemies, more everything!

-The Dark Knight Rises-Not as good as TDK, not as good as Batman Begins, still better than the non-Nolan trilogy Batman movies. Could have been better though.

-Skyfall-So much better than Quantum of Solace. Still not as good as Casino Royale, though. That was a truly great action film, this was just a very good one. With a really weird ending action sequence that felt quite out of place.

-Mass Effect 3 (Collector's Edition)-All the flaws in this game get a pass. I don't even care if I'm hurting the industry by failing to be bothered that EA capitalized on my love of the franchise and got me to pay $80 for a game without an ending. Any thought of imperfections can be assuaged by all the game did right, and the fact that everything about it that was important to me was satisfactorily delivered on. It was my game of the year, my entertainment experience of the year, and I will love the Mass Effect trilogy with all my pitiful heart until the day I die.

I only actually paid for one other bit of electronic enjoyment all year (my budget is barely enough to keep me alive), and the remake of Total Recall was not worth mentioning. I has no purpose in existing at all. In fact, I rewatched the original recently to see if it still holds up. It so, so does. I hope Colin Farrel forgets about trying to be a credible action star soon. He makes me sad.

It's true that more of this excellent show can't come soon enough, but in case you haven't noticed, the people involved have kind of been very (very) busy.
Martin Freeman (Watson) is playing this tiny little role you might have heard of called Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit trilogy.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), for his part, is playing the antagonist in both The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek: Into Darkness.
All good and true points. Steven Moffat is even more busy than the two stars of the show what with his other maniacally popular BBC program (which is also taking too long. April is our next Doctor Who episode? Fucktits!). This does not lessen the frustration due to lack of progress on the show.

I am definitely being unfair to everyone involved, but what of it? It's hard being a geek, subject to the whims and fancies of sadistic freaks like Moffat and the increasingly bizarre lifestyles of the actors who play our favorite roles. We few, we sad, sad few, we band of nerdlingers.

Here are my top 5 favorite movies. But not like 5-1, 1 being the best because ranking which was the best based on # is sort of petty, that or I'm just lazy:

-The Avengers: Pretty much the movie I predicted would eventually be made and was called crazy for it. Now it came out with its amazing screenplay, characters, and a 3rd act that will be remembered for all time, but I also became popular for my extreme fortune telling skills. Never before have I ever smiled that long in a movie theater, my face still hurts.

-Django Unchained: There are far to many good performances in this film to turn down because of length. Not as good as Terentino's Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill, but crafted so well to tackle a subject like slavery, racism, and the very very disturbing and gritty violence, it is as Terentino as it gets.

-Cabin in the Woods: Genre defying horror movie, no spoilers, nuff said.

-21 Jump Street: Every single joke worked. The story, the characters, the humor was nailed every single time. This is how you make comedies, and I hate to say it but this was the best of Channing Tatum, and the star debut of a slim Jonah Hill has never been funnier.

-The Hobbit: Where George Lucas failed to make a prequel, Peter Jackson returns to his old work with all the respect it deserves. The grand scale of Middle-Earth has never felt so enormous in scale to the point where it really feels like an adventure. And the 48 fps, I would like more of it.
