Only 5? Of the many game soundtracks that I like, these 5 stick out at the moment:
<spoiler=Super Mario Galaxy>
Battlerock Galaxy
Gusty Garden
Final Battle With Bowser
Mario games have always had good soundtracks, but they never really sounded epic. That changed with Super Mario Galaxy. The sweeping orchestral score made me feel like I was jumping out into this gigantic world full of wonder.
<spoiler=Mass Effect>
The Citadel
Saren
Noveria
The Mass Effect games are among the most cinematic of any games that I can think of. The soundtrack reflects this fact. Somebody once said that a good movie score should be felt rather than heard. The music is integral to the experience of the games. When I listen to the Noveria theme, I close my eyes and am transported to those snowy peaks. Jack Wall is the John Williams of videogames.
<spoiler=Final Fantasy VI>
Celes' Theme
Terra's Theme
Ultros' Theme
A sheer masterpiece. The best JRPG ever produced has the best soundtrack ever produced for a videogame. Every character theme is evocative of the characters that they represent. The orchestrations of the music succeeds on the SNES where many movie sountracks can pale in comparison. Nobuo Uematsu is a genius.
<spoiler=Sonic Generations>
Rooftop Run
Chemical Plant Zone
Live and Learn
Sonic has accumulated a great deal of amazing music over the years. The soundtracks of the first 2 games pushed the boundaries of what could be produced by the Genesis. As the years went on the music of Crush 40 helped aid in the energetic feel of the game. A lot of the music in Sonic games invariably has a manic feel that makes you feel the need for speed.
<spoiler=Chrono Trigger>
Frog's Theme
Magus' Theme
Robo's Theme
Rick-Rolling since 1995. Chrono trigger came about as a sort of dream team project, and it shows in the music. The bulk of the work on this soundtrack was done by Yasunori Mitsuda with notable contributions from Nobuo Uematsu and Noriko Matsueda. The soundtrack swings from epic orchestral pieces to slow contemplative melodies to poppy songs. The soundtrack is without a doubt, a collaborative success.
Also, honorable mention to Super Meat Boy. Danny Baranowski is absolutely brilliant.
