So there's certainly some decent tv out there amongst all the dross and we all have some shows we frequently watch. But what are the shows that you get surprised when someone hasn't watched them? That you might go out of the way to encourage someone to watch? The shows that'd you own on DVD or would own if you could afford?

Whats your top five must-watch shows?
5. I actually don't have a five there's too many shows in my mind vying for this spot if I had to pick it would be from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Breaking Bad, with Pawn Stars trailing close behind (what can I say I love seeing antiques get appraised)
4. Firefly, it's a massive nerd cliche, but I of course love this show, I try to lend my dvds to people without over-hyping it (a serious risk) because I love sharing it's wonders.c Nothing more to say.
3. Arrested Development, quite possibly the funniest sitcom I've ever seen, I love the meticulous use of references and callbacks. The way it improves on a second watching with all the foreshadowing.
2. The Wire. What I love about this show is the realism, while CSI has cartels and serial killers being knocked over each episode, this takes 12 hour length episodes to show the huge amount of police work to bring in one gang of drug dealers, no cases are made by magical DNA evidence or last minute confession, just lots of good police work and of course the titular wire. All of the characters from the cops to the criminals, politicans to the little guys, burst with so much character. Just really a great social commentry.
1. Doctor Who, there's a lot of debate whether it's better or worse now with Moffat. I won't wade into that, but state I simply love this show, it has comedy, action, drama and an naive irreverance that brings that brings the inner child out in me every episode.

The first couple of seasons of House MD.
That's about the only thing I've used my TV Receiver for.

In no particular order:

-Stargate SG-1, all 8 series of it. And only eight.
-Castle, because Nathan Fillion really is rather ruggedly handsome.
-NCIS, "Is that like CSI?" "Only if you're dyslexic."
-Blackadder, there was a time when British comedy was unbeatable. Even the worst series still tops some of the things that get released nowadays.
-University Challenge. Jeremy Paxman is a god among men, and smart girls are sexy (on the odd occasion one of the teams has a girl on it).

5 - MAD MEN
Probably the best show still on the air*. Consistently excellent episodes, consistently strong performances. Just an excellent show, top to bottom. (*I haven't seen Breaking Bad yet)

4 - COWBOY BEBOP
Perhaps the finest anime I've ever watched, and just an excellent show in its own right. Surprisingly deep and heartfelt, and extremely funny.

3 - THE OFFICE (UK VERSION)
Arguably the best comedy I've ever seen. By turns hilarious, agonizing, and touching. Only 13 episodes, so it starts strong, finishes stronger, and never wears out its welcome.

2 - THE SOPRANOS
The show that ushered in HBO's "golden era" of television. Spectacular all around, but quarterbacked by the dominating performance of Gandolfini as Tony Soprano.

1 - THE WIRE
It's quite simply the best fucking show in the history of television. If you haven't seen it, you're poorer for it.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Deadwood, Battlestar Galactica, Six Feet Under, Arrested Development, Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Community, Extras, Curb Your Enthusiasm

Heh...I don't think it's necessary to specify we're talking about the reboot when it comes to BSG...
You'd think, right? But there are these rabid Original Series people who are still outraged that Ron Moore made Starbuck a woman.
