Well, it's December, and another year of gaming comes to a close--in many ways, the best year the industry has had in a very, VERY long time.

So, Escapists, I ask you this: now that the dust has settled, looking back on 2007, what do you feel were the best games to come out? Your top five, ten, whatever!

My own personal Top Ten Games of 2007 (in no particular order):

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Super Mario Galaxy
World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade
Halo 3
The Orange Box
Bioshock
Call of Duty 4 (tentative--only played it a bit at a friend's, but loved it)
Mass Effect
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All

Mine would have to be, in no particular order:

Call of Duty 4
Guitar Hero III
UFO Afterlight (yes,I'm a big fan of the X-COM series and am still chapped that Microprose went under.)
The Orange Box
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
Warhawk (Battlefield impersonator that in my oppinion is nowhere near as good, up here since Battlefield 2 and 2142 didn't come out this year)

That's all I can think of as being on my top list right now, I'm trying to stick to games that came out this year, and honestly haven't played many worth mentioning, yes I'm looking at you Jericho, waste of a couple hours of my life.

The games that stand out in my memory as being quite good are, in this order:

Mass Effect
Halo 3
Bioshock
The Darkness

Everything else I played this year was a little bit average and doesn't really stand out as a unique gameplay experience. I could give you a much more comprehensive list of shit games though.

Shit these games suck Kermi

Mass Effect
Halo 3
Bioshock
The Darkness
Orange Box. oh come on a snapper head running around shooting portals.....zzzzzzzzzzzz
oh so many more to name as coaster material, but they dont win awards showing the ball licking that goes on in the gameing community.

A absolute load of toad spunk.

COD 4 is great and about the only game that made the grade.
GRAW 2 - yeah ok it was worth a play
Skate - good try but a little, like skating wihtout the gravel rash or 16 year old chick hanging aroung to hold your board for you.
Forza 2 - best 360 driving game, but left alot to be desired after you raced for a couple of hours and had some horse power at your disposal

I hounestly don't know what to say. Did you even play any of these games?! You couldn't actually be serious. You could maybe dislike one or two for whatever reason but to say all that just makes me feel like you're saying it out of spite or just so you're not appart of the crowd.

I played all of these to the end, and can honestly say they were nothing special. To also say Im just doing it to not be part of the crowd, its like saying people are really buying PS3's in mass and that Sony are happy with a console that imploded the console strangle hold they had.

I dont buy into the hype and make my own decision, Mass Effect was boring and had a slow combat system with the weopon only being matched by Halo for ineffective lifeless and comical in their handling, physics and use.

Bioshock ooooh ahhh the sound everyone cries, the feel and horror. Yeah what ever blah, blah blah, so the water graphic was done really well. That is it, the rest of the game was as though Dr Moreau had spewed forth a great big steaming cleveland steamer right in the middle of the ocean.

Now the Darkness, yeah what ever. Come on the game didnt know if it wanted to strangle itself to put itself out of its own misery, or just bore you to death with the essence of the movie The Ring.

Then Orange Box, a throw together of old game, with the addition of a mildly amusing Team Fortess two, and a game that had as much thought as a fart in an elevator. Cheer to PORTAL you smelly cheese cutter.

I could have written and included a journal on how FURY ( aka Auran bank buster, by by employee's were shipping the blame to China ) but all would agree this was more likely to win abortion of year rather than game of the year.

But I would also add Frontlines : Fuels of War look intersting and played well ( nice to see Yahtzee at the THQ open night, I too was there looking on as the team at THQ opened its door and gave a warm welcome and great evening )

So there you have it.

I'll go with Portal being the best game of the year, as it is the only one this year I've bought that hasn't been on the market for at least three years and doesn't get a "meh" response from me after two weeks. Just Portal. I didn't buy the Orange Box.

For games I've played but not bought (yay for Family and Friends with game consoles), I'd put Mario Strikers Charged up there. I don't care how much I've been pounded into the ground by my brother over this game, it's still fun.

For games I'm tempted to go Next Gen for on looks, hype and trusted friends recommendations alone, I'll go with Rock Band (which isn't out here yet...) and Assassins Creed. Soon as Brutal Legend is released, I have the three reasons I need to buy an XBox360.

Now I'm 90% certain you either haven't played Mass Effect, or you only finished Eden Prime before getting bored and losing interest. Even if that's not the case, I don't see how me genuinely enjoying Mass Effect has anything to do with hype - other people being excited about a game doesn't make me like it more (or less, for that matter).
I can see how you'd feel how you do when your favourite video games are dull-coloured war simulators that get repackaged every year in the same way as Madden's Slightly-Updated-Roster '08, and having Call of Duty 4 come in second to Halo 3 on the most-played Xbox Live games list every week must really hurt you.
But it's not my fault.

Does the word drone ring any bells with you sponge bobs?

I would think so, Halo at the top of the charts because lifeless mutant run around using crappy weapons on lifeless surrounds obviously allows them to sit and eat their cheeto's with coke in hand and feel good about themsleves.

I would have more to like if games companies didnt thrash out the same boxed dog shit, with stupid stories that are set in the land of aliens races who love to become bbq meet for a laser.

As you genuinely like Mass Effect good for you, pat yourself on the back and thank god for the meager existence he gifted your grey matter.

As for Shadow Skill, have to say that

Crackdown was good, pity is had been dumped and no sequal will follow
The Witcher, a definate sleeper along with Conan good for a hack and slash that has slipped in without fan fare and getting credit for a game that has some merit.

I actually thought that Mass Effect had a decent story and the voice acting was great but then everything else kind of failed. I would have bought the game otherwise. The Darkness was ok a decent attempt marred by a game destroying side quest bug.

Do not feed the trolls, folks. No reason.

Because I have too many responsibilities, AND bought 2 new systems this year (after they dropped in price) I didn't play too many games.

Finished FF12-and it was solid.
Eternal Sonata I'm still playing, and finding it to be quite charming, even though it is put together a little roughly.
God of War 2 was exactly what I'd hoped it would be.
Guitar Hero 3 was probably my biggest disappointment.

But Bioshock truly hooked me. Haven't thought so highly of a videogame in a long while.

Galaxy
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Assasin's Creed
COD4
Pokemon (either version)
Halo 3
Orange Box (it's hard to count multiple games as GOTY)
Metriod Prime 3
Rock Band
