Let me put it this way. I will echo what some people say about America being the greatest country in the world. (The initial concept of it, at least) But we still have a long, long, long, looooooong way to go before being anywhere near perfect. Especially the southern part of the country.

I refuse to stereotype a nation. Good day to you sir.
Thank you my good sir, one of my favorite post in this thread. You can judge the current government, and that wouldn't be stereotyping.

I'm American (from Washington DC) and I'd say I'm glad to grow up here. I'm not brimming with national pride (which i think ridiculous to begin with) but I'm a fan.

Ignorant opinions of the US come from inside and outside the country:

Inside: America is the best dern country in the World and if u come here speak Aynglish goddamit.

Outside: America tries to police the world and monopolize global politics

Any opinion of an entire country is going to be an immense generalization

I'm Australian and I really want to visit America one day, especially Washington DC.

As a country I feel kinda sorry for you guys, your seen as the world's police because your the only people with the military power to do it. Yet, people spend half their lives saying your wrong for doing it and the other half telling you to keep doing it.

All the while the lack of money in your domestic sphere is beginning to show, with the insurance and medical issues your having.

I appreciate the foreign policy difficulties you guys have and I think you're doing a good job at it. So yeah, you're doing fine by me. I really want to see the White House in person ( though it's impossible to get inside, just to look at it from Pennsylvania Avenue would be enough.)
*Gives hug* It's nice not to be hated. People outside the country yell at us, people inside yell at us...it's tiring.

And to the people talking about Tornado Alley and New Orleans: by the same logic shouldn't Japan and Hawaii be depopulated because they could be destroyed by earthquakes/tsunamis/hurricanes(hawaii only) at any moment? Any landmass is going to have it's risk, you just have to learn to live with them. And from someone who lives in Tornado Alley...it's really not that bad, and comes with the added bonus of you learning to read the weather pretty accurately.

I used to think the US was an idiotic country and I desperately wanted to flee to Europe (I'm American). Thanks to some minor traveling and the power of the internet, I learned that idiots are everywhere and countries that experienced WWII on their own soil have developed their governments in ways that are sometimes common sense and better than the US and in other ways that attempt to protect or punish the wrong thing entirely. Ultimately, there's not enough worse about the US to warrant going somewhere else and losing the things I like about it.

As an American, I actually have no idea of how to respond to this. I think we're OK. We're a little fat, and we have shitty PR, but apart from that, we're an alright people.

Well it lets you believe whatever you want (Scientology even), but we do have our share (and by share I mean headquarters) of dipshits in politics. But all in all, it gives freedoms that a lot of other countries don't and therefore is the great in my opinion.

Our politicians are corrupt. Same as everywhere else. Our people are stupid. Same as everywhere else.

So we are just like everyone else, but we have more nuclear weapons.
