On a forum I was on a while ago, a member was suspended because he asked if anyone knew of any good PSX emulators. The reason he was suspended was for "encouraging illegal activities".

But are emulators illegal? And what's your view on them?

I've used them before to play the original Mario Kart and Harvest Moon. Unfortunately, there are no emulators to allow me to play original Xbox titles that would provide me with a great deal of nostalgia.

NOTE: I do not encourage their and I'm just offering my thoughts.

I don't know if emulators themselves are illegal[footnote]I can imagine them violating some patents[/footnote], but downloading non-freeware games for them is piracy. I guess you could argue about whether talking about emulators is actively encouraging illegal activities if they themselves are not illegal, but I don't really know how you would use them in a legal way.

Well, technically no, but c'mon. Who downloads games they already own exclusively? Not nobody, not no how, that's who.

My views on emulators: they rule.

I've used them to play old games which would be too difficult to find a legal copy of (which I don't think should be too harshly reprimanded). I haven't used mine in a while however.

From what I understand, they are illegal. I could be wrong, but that's what I have been told. So no, I don't think to kindly of them.

EDIT: And no, I don't think we should follow laws blindly. But if a law is made by a legitimate authority that does not infringe on someone's God-given rights, then it should be followed. LG FTW!

My view on emulators...?

"A potentially very fun thing that has never elicited sufficient initial interest on my part to cause me to investigate further."

The legality thing never really entered my head.

I might hypothetically use them for old consoles that would be ridiculously hard to get, or games like that. So I would hypothetically get a Game Boy emulator if my brother lost my copy of Wario Land ten years ago. Of course this is all completely hypothetical.

EDIT: And emulators of modern consoles are wrong. If you can probably afford a PC to run modern games, you can afford the consoles and games themselves. If you somehow can't, games are a luxury, so it's not your right have them for free.

Emulators themselves are not illegal as long as the code used to make them doesn't infringe on patents of copyrighted software (the consoles themselves). That's why a common PS2 emulator gives you all their code, but forces you to find the PS2's BIOS for yourself.

Of course, the games themselves are definitely illegal as they are copyrighted. I tend to turn a blind eye when the game is no longer in production, and the owning company is too stupid to try to legitimately turn a new-age buck through it (digital distribution in some way, HD remake, etc.)

Emulators aren't illegal but they are usually used to play illegally obtained games so people quickly draw conclusions -> if person uses knives then he probably stabs people.

Personally I love them (but I never used them obviously, I also don't stab people).
Noone is porting those prehistoric goldies and backwards compatibility is a phrase unknown to most developers, so it's just a good way to keep those games alive.

Protip: The majority rules on copyright and piracy is that if something is not avilable for comercial sale, meaning it is not being sold in stores for the profit of the copyright holder, then it is not illegal to download and use. while this is rarely a valid defense with music, as Itunes, etc has nearly every song produced, ever, you would be hard pressed to find a place that sells new copies of Super Mario Brothers for the original NES. Video game companies seem to be less petty than musicians in this regard as well, as the number of "cases" regarding emulators for outdated consoles are slim to none.

On really old games it's fine in my book. The company who made the game isn't getting money if you buy one off ebay.

OT: i don't mind them and have used one in the past to look up a game to make sure it was the right one before buying my brother this old power rangers game i had been looking for for a while.

I really don't see the big deal with it that much anymore these days. When you think about it Sega isn't making money off Sega Genesis cartridges these days the only people who are losing out on the sales are personal collectors who sell some of their games, or comic shops that specialize in classic console titles from the 8-16 bit era.

I ave absolutely no problem with them. I mainly use mame, and have the Cave games that have not gotten a proper home release.
