Hardcore gaming is rocking awesome for me. Casuals are fine, just don't muck up my consoles with too much shovelware and easy games.

Perfectly fine if you want to play casuals, but when that starts interfering with my challenging game experience (aka Twilight Princess, that game was far too easy), please shove a brick down your throat.

I mean, if making a game easy is absolutely necessary, at least give us a hard mode. Or super hard mode. Or mind-numbingly super-hard mode.

Ahem.

"Casual" and "hardcore" gamers do not exist. It is merely a false dichotomy put forth by the old guard of video gamers who are unjustifiably sore at their hobby spreading out to new markets and the assumption that they are being abandoned for the "casual" crowd.

Thank you for your time.

Explanation: "Casual" and "hardcore" do not exist; only games exist. And only gamers exist. A person who plays FarmVille as a hobby is no different than someone who sinks 200+ hours a month into the online component Modern Warfare 2.

What about a person who recognizes both games as a bastardization of what gaming once was? What is he?
A gamer? I thought I made that clear in that there is only one category of gamer, and that is "gamer."

Just asking, as your examples were both extremely post-golden age.
'k. I was just using the generalized examples of what people seem to see as the pinnacle of "casual" and "hardcore." Or at least what I think people see them as, since I don't follow this damn trend.

You're oversimplifying it.
There are Gamers, Gramers, and casuals.
I'm interested now, is Gramer a portmanteau of something?
No, it's just a distortion of the word gamer. They imitate us, they are like us, but they are not us. They are horrid perversions of us, twisted and corrupted. They browned our games. They filled them with overly macho non-characters. They are killing the soul of gaming.

Well let's be honest here, "hardcore" games just aren't for everyone. A lot of people just can't be bothered trying to grasp the intricate play mechanics of an RPG, or learning the minor differences between various assault rifles in online FPSs. So why SHOULDN'T games be made for people who want to pick up a controller, learn how to play the game in less than a minute and then enjoy the game for the next 20 hours? If you argue that casual games shouldn't be made, then you're basically arguing that people shouldn't get to be happy unless they feel like putting in unnecessary extra work for it. Stop being a douche.

On the other hand, my problem with casual gaming is that, because casual gamers will accept much lower standards of complexity, the mindset has set in among developers that they will also accept much lower standards of QUALITY. In other words, many casual games are CRAP. Have you seen the kind of licensed tripe being made for kids these days? Colourful cartoon bullshit with all the depth, playability and challenge of a puddle of vomit. Do you remember what games were like when you were a kid? (Oh yeah, a lot of you got a PS2 for your first console. Christ I'm getting old.) Well when I was a kid, games for kids were as complex and difficult as games for adults. Why? Because games were for kids back then. Look at a game like the original Legend of Zelda or Metal Gear and try working THAT one out on your own. Games were FUCKING HARD back in the old days. Even though the idea of the "gamer" didn't really exist, let alone the "hardcore gamer" or "casual gamer", games were already hardcore.

In a colloquial sense, I find the terms inane.

Hardcore is an allusion, in a marketing sense, to core audience. I can understand third person shooters and violence/cut scenes/nudity being a perfectly fine thing for the core audience.

The only time I actually get annoyed by casual gaming is when it affects hardcore gaming negatively, for example, the fact that casual gaming denied hardcore gamers a real Nintendo console for this generation
This, basically.
Also when people act like they know everything because they play farmville or what ever.

I kinda see my self in between the two. I buy hard core games but I don't play them as much as a hard core gamer would I guess. In my opinion I think people in the Grey area are getting the best experience.

After much lurking, I have come to the conclusion that "hardcore" and "casual" have no clear deffinition and are completely meaningless.

I'll play whatever I think is fun and let social snobs with too much free time try to categorize my fun in whatever mindless way they pick.

A word like hardcore gives the wrong impression.

Also the word gamer is used far too losely and it tends to be people calling themselves it in order to show their hobby to others. I dont make a distinction between what some people call casual and hardcore for me there are simply games. There are those who enjoy playing them and there are those who dont. That is all.
