Thinking back on it, even though I've always considered myself neutral towards the series, I've actually played most of the games for one reason or another. Though honestly I only started playing the multiplayer when Black Ops came out. I quite enjoyed it, and the whole thing made me feel better about playing FPS games online in general.
Recently, I decided to play MW2 online. I kind of wish I hadn't. It has the same addicting quality as Black Ops' online portion, but is far more frustrating. The only thing I found a little better in MW2 was the spawning. I'm sure we've all been made aware of, at length, all the problems that MW2's online multiplayer has, so I don't think I need to elaborate on that with other CoD players.
Black Ops' online multiplayer is, I think, much more thoughtfully designed than MW2's. I suppose Treyarch had an easier time since they could use all the feedback from MW2's online community and learn from that game's mistakes. I just wish MW2 could have learned from MW2's mistakes. I think the only thing MW2 learned was that you could sell map packs for fifteen dollars.
The multiplayer segments for MW2 and Black Ops are both addicting, but I think Black Ops is more balanced... though it comes at the cost of some variety. Still, I would stick with Black Ops, myself.
As for CoD singleplayer campaigns, they're fine. This is the part of the franchise I was most familiar with for a long time. Some sections in some games (WaW springs to mind) could be a little tedious, but I found you could always find some redeeming qualities in each game's singleplayer portion... even if said redeeming qualities would differ from game to game. As for the series' latest installment, I enjoyed its singleplayer campaign. I thought it was the best one from the franchise's most recent games (MW,WaW, MW2, and BO). WaW's, I thought, was the weakest.
