My parents house used to have frequent power outages whenever it rained. Let's just say when the PS2 tells you not to turn it off it generally means fuckin business.

Also I remember the first kingdom hearts I was almost all the way through it and my friend came over. So we start a new game and by instinct i saved over the same save slot within the first 15 minutes.

Dragon's Dogma gave me two headaches. I'd just gotten a PS3 and was playing DD for the first time. I had not yet gotten used to the consoles and didn't realize how 'fragile' it's system was compared to my PC. WHen i'd left it on for a while it had gone into sleep mode. I however thought it hanged and hit the power button. POOF! Corrupted my savefile and my PS3 profile. 6 hours of playtime gone.

The second incident related to DD's design itself. it only has ONE AUTOSAVE slot and ONE checkpoint. WHen it autosaves, it also overwrites your manual save. WHat fool designed this? Coupled with how some missions must be completed before certain story points, I ended up failing a whole bunch of side quests when I turned a story quest in and POOF! The game decided to autosave and overwrite the save I made RIGHT before that just in case something happened. It didn't help that the game never tells you if some quests need to be done before another.

Persona 4, I was playing on a 60GB PS3 and the virtual Memory card got corrupted while I was playing, meaning I couldn't load or save I had 70 hours playtime and was in the final dungeon when this happened and if I had died I would have had to start the game from scratch, this lead to the most tense final boss battle I've ever had.

my first play-through of Fallout 3 I forgot to have multiple save files so after sinking 100 or so hours I went to save. Turns out I pressed the wrong button and deleted that save. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU............ But that was totally my fault so now I keep a backlog of 5 or so saves.

Funny enough the only time I have ever had any save game issues was the one time it was the worst case scenario.
Short version is that for some reason that I cannot remember, I used to get demo disks for the PS2 (they contained demos for lots of upcoming games and trailers). I put it in, played a couple demos then decided to go back to my old games. Turns out that demo had a weird bug that deleted and ALL of my save game data on my memory stick. If I remember right I lost more then 10 different saves for different games.

Worst save-accident I've done was accidentally saving over my older brother's FF8 file.......3 times. ^^;

We had picked it up when it came out and both started our own games. He was in the first save slot, I was in the second. On three seperate occassions I got a little too hasty and ended up saving over his game. :3

Another rather large blunder came when I was first playing through the original Final Fantasy Tactics on Playstation. The end of Chapter 3 is absolutely brutal. It's a 3-part battle, each part giving you an opportunity to save in between them. If you do: you better make sure you've got a save before you initiated the battle or you could very easily get screwed over.

The first part is easy enough, just assaulting some gastle gates with a bunch of baddies to take out, just a standard straight-forward fight that is pretty easy if you come prepared. The 2nd part, though, is where you can very easily get stuck. You start out in a one-on-one fight with a guy who has a high chance of blocking you unless you attack from behind him, he's got brutally powerful ranged attacks that require no charge time and never miss/are unblockable, and as I recall he's got the Maintenance ability equiped so you can't break his equipment. Basically the only way to get past this part is to have high enough mobility to move around behind him on your first turn and have the 2 Swords ability equipped so you can deal enough damage to send him to his knees in one shot...because if he gets to hit you twice, chances are you're dead.

As if that weren't hard enough, once you get him to his knees he transforms into a monster with powerful spells and summons 3 other monsters with powerful spells. The rest of your group shows up at this point...but chances are your main character has been pretty weakened.

Alright, so you manage to beat THAT guy...now you just have to go to a rooftop to save 2 NPCs before a boss kills them....which he can easily do on his first turn...meaning it's yet another fight where you have to knock him or one of his two henchmen to their knees before they even have a chance to move.

So yeah, if you saved in the middle of this 3 part battle and find yourself unable to deal with the 1v1 or the rooftop battle...you've no choice but to start a new game.

I thought we were talking about like computer files, in which case a flash file where I was lining cartoon stuff got corrupted. The file would open and you could see a 1 scene with all the art lined but then instant crash, copying wouldn't do anything. So that was like a years worth of vector art that is only visible in jpgs I exported for previews.

Games wise? May have a chunk of you beat here.
Had this cool gameshark that let you save memcard data to it, like 8 cards worth. Well, my friend knocked the PSOne over and all my save data was deleted, games like: FFVII, FFT, FFVIII, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi, Breath of fire 3, Parasite Eve, Parasite Eve 2, Megaman Legends, Megaman Legends 2, Armored Core and probably a few others I don't recall

If that's not enough a fucking PS2 demo of viewtiful Joe erased both my PS2 memory cards. Thanks guys.
Disgaea, Disgaea 2, God of War 1 & 2, Red Faction 1 & 2 Timesplitters 2 & 3, Ratchet and Clank 2,3 & Deadlocked, Armored Core 2 & 3, Devil May Cry 1,2,3, Resident Evil 4 and PSOne backup saves.

I was playing Dead To Rights on the original Xbox and the save points were so far apart after requiring brutal gameplay - though not Hunter: The Reckoning ridonkulous - that it led to this situation: There's a part where you have to both beat up a massive mob of inmates and then do some ludicrous arm-wrestling mini-game which consisted of pounding the buttons like you're performing a snare roll. This was all one long sequence of beat up a bunch of guys and then mini-game. I finally get past this misery after a looooooong time trying and get past it. I continued playing, thinking that I'd had a checkpoint save, and died. One guess as to where I got set back to. Yeah. I simply quit the game, popped out the disc, and tossed it into my sell pile.

Similar tragedy was playing Dead or Alive 4 single-player, running through the story mode to unlock the alternate costumes for each character. IIRC there were 8 matches you had to go through and the 4th and final opponents were significantly and unfairly, respectively, more challenging to beat. One character was giving me fits and it took me something awful like 45 minutes - yes, I suck - to finally beat the boss. However, the moment it's saving the system froze. I waited and waited before ultimately powering it down. I restart and load the game and go to check that character's select screen and, that's right, it didn't give me credit for the unlock. Shut that one down, too, but didn't sell it; I just played against friends head-to-head.

I carried one save file all the way through a run of Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil just a quicksave with no backup save of any sort all the way to the final boss, got through the first phase of the fight, saved and then found out that I didn't have enough ammo left finish the fight. That was right after the expansion came out and I didn't go back to it again until about a month ago. I made sure to have a couple of backup save files this time.

Megaman Legends 2. This was the first time I played a PS1 in years and I forgot that autosaves didn't exist that much back then and I also forgot that there are no continues. I reached the tower fortress or whatever the hell it is, it was somewhere in the beginning of the latter half of the game or something. I died there. Then, this popped up.

This damn screen, with the chilling music in the background send a flashback to what happens when you died. OH LAWD.

An old school one, back in the day I was a proud owner of Ogre Battle for the SNES. I had maybe 4 missions left to beat the game, taking the extra effort to follow the 'good path' and doing all the side things to get the best ending. Then one afternoon for some reason I had the cartridge in my hand I wasn't running on the linoleum floor back to my room to play, slipped, aaaand smack! Hand shot out cartridge first to break my fall.

The good news was the game still worked... bad news was the save data was gone. Who knew you could physically smack the save data out of a SNES cartridge?

Worst save file incident... Oh ho ho do I have a story here.

I was playing Dark Souls on the Xbox. It was my first Character. She was speced out quite averagely as a cloth wearing strength build, wielding a Gargoyle Halberd and the Grasscrest shield.

Anyway, I had sunk 70 hour into that save. It was my first run; it was when I worked out how to beat the bloody bed of chaos. It was the save I first ventured through Blight town on without breaking the TV out of pure rage. It was the save that I FINALLY got past those piece of shit Silver Knight Archers in Anor Londo.

Then, I decided I was going to kill Nito. He had the final Lordsoul before I fought Gwyn, the final boss. As I loaded my save, guess what happens.
My Xbox froze.
And corrupted my save.

Never played that game on Xbox ever again.

Steam Cloud didn't work on some games when my SSD failed on me. My 130h Mechromancer in BL2 perished before my eyes. Finished the game in TVHM with a complete set Legendary Weapons and Shields, just wiped. Lost all of my Bonus Stat points aswell. I can't look at that game anymore.

My Skyrim character progress always seems to get cut short when I switch over to different characters. Half the time I play in Skyrim is return to the same place I was at previously. Really sucks.

Wasn't with a game, was an art project.

I'd spent about 3 hours on the colouring and then the program crashed. Usually I save every 10 minutes but I got really into it. Oh the humanity.

I had an almost 100% complete save file on GTA Vice City which my brother promptly deleted after we had a fight.... I cried.
My brother did the same thing to me, but with my copy of Pokemon Blue.

I was standing right in front of Mewtwo at the time.
Things like this are why I never let my GBA/memory cards out of my sight whenever my sister and I had a fight.

Worst save file mishap would probably be an unfixable bug a good few hours into New Vegas, requiring a new save file. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

A moment of silence for the loss you've experienced.

As for mine, it was Fallout 3. Before any of the DLCs, not that long after the game released. Second file, almost level 20. I used to only have one save slot.

Then that save corrupted and wouldn't load. Bye bye to the entire character.

Now, in any game I can, I have multiple save slots. At least four.
