When you play video games, have fun, and don't need to be a pretentious jerk to everybody who doesn't play the same games as you.

For starts anyone that describes themselves hardcore *anything* should be launched into the sun. It doesn't matter if you have 1 game or the entire bloody catalogue for every console. If you play games for fun you're a gamer. Thats it.

What is it with people and these arbitrary tags? Why do you feel the need to have to sum up the entire content of your character in one word?

Well said, you're now going on my mental respect list.

Anyway to me, like my associate above has already said, a gamer is somebody who regularly plays games and loves them. Same kind of rule as a footballer or skateboarder. Done and done.

You play a game, be it on the wii or on a DS and you could be called a "gamer".

Simple enough, really.
To reiterate, a gamer is anyone who plays any games at all. It's like all fandom- anyone who likes the thing in question is a fan, whether or not they like it more or less than other people. Fandom tiers don't exist.

*Played over 30+ titles (Revised due to Imat's valid point)
I think that there should be a completed at least 1 game on hardest difficulty in single player because every GAMER should have to do this at least once

You have used the word "Pwnd" to a friend outside of gaming

Now my checklist

This is what I have so far, a sort of list
*Played over 30+ titles (Revised due to Imat's valid point) (Check)
*Devoted 8 hours into a single game in one sitting (Check)
*Actually memorized codes for your favorite games before (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A) (Check)
*Ever held a conversation with fellow gamers about how FFVII was the best/worst title of all time (half check but I have talked about it with friends)
*When noon is too early..... way too early. -DrunkWithPower (Check)
*When you yell "camper" at the bad guys in movies. -DrunkWithPower (Check-I can tell who the bad guy is in almost every movie because of what he does)
*You buy a mini-fridge to put next to your computer desk for your Dew because going to the kitchen takes too long; Your REALLY are a gamer when you buy a coffee pot to put on top of the mini-fridge. -Wolfiesden (Check- but i don't like coffer)
* True gamers gain a meditation like ability while playing. -Sisnax (Check)
* True gamers always look for weapons, escape routes and potentially dangerous enemies while on the street. -Sisnax (Check)
* Gamers can memorize locations and maps in their heads and can bring them up any time they get lost. -Sisnax (Check)
* True gamers always take the hardest route knowing there will be something good at the end. -Sisnax (Check)

I leave the rest up to the community to post their thoughts and I'll add them list later

Ive done all those things besides the FF7 chat.. wait, actually i ahve.

May i add some?

Youre a gamer if you wish your school/college/uni was a FPS Map.
You're a gamer if you find yourself looking at a location/spot that would make a potentially sweet sniper spot.
You're a gamer if you have just too many empty cans and bottle around your gaming area.

Somthing tells me people are missing the point of the topic, no i'm not trying to label an entire genre, no i'm not trying to make excuses to my own gaming habits; I play too much and I know it. what i'm trying to define is what makes someone a hardcore gamer and to what degree? much the same as "What makes a B-boy a B-boy" or a "Metal head a Metal head" while obviously there is no clear cut line that makes someone something most people can still define what a person may be at a glance in normal life without much knowledge on the person in question

I.E. a guy with pericings and long spikey hair may be a-

I think The Lizard of Odd described labels the best

Well i just decided to get rid of a good chunk of rant, but kept it for a later time. So staying on topic.

OP: A gamer can argue why a sequel will never be better then the original even if the original was a phone game with pixelated graphics, screwy controls, and a chopy story; the sequel being on a next genconsole, taking the feel of the original, but fixing all the problems.

I've always considered hardcore gamers to be the ones that play competitively. A lot of what you posted are just basic gamer attributes.

But more or less, you're a gamer when you call some one a Peach. (A slut)
You're also a gamer if you understand where that reference comes from.

I'm noticing a lot of these aren't "gamer" things, but inability to separate games from real life, mentally. If I overheard someone yell "camper" at some guy on a movie screen I'd recommend they get some counseling.

As for the 'legitimate' ones...well, labels take us backwards as a society, as a way to try to judge people based on something that they do rather'n who they are as a whole. Not a fan of them.

When you get your paycheck and automatically set aside a percentage for your habit.
When the boss is coming your away you automatically think oh crap I got aggro!
Your car/cubicle is covered in an homage to various games.
Part of your tax rebate check goes to upgrading your gaming systems.
You can relate to the jokes of Crtl-Alt-Del and/or Penny Arcade

[SUB]Just saying, it is possible.[/SUB]

The criterias I think people must meet is that they own and play a game. That's it.

Yes cause arbitrary rules are what makes you a gamer. What makes a gamer is LOVING THE MEDIUM. I love games. I love playin them, I enjoy talking about them, I like to read about them, I watch developer diaries and the behind the scenes stuff (though the ones that are prefabbed, marketing controlled, mission statements are always easy to spot in the first 30 seconds).

Gaming is a culture and good culture is open to new people, they grow change and evolve. Closed cultures stagnate and die subsisting on ceremony and class requirements. Thinking of gaming culture as requiring a qualification leads to elitism and, even worse, aristocracy.
