You're a gamer when no matter how low your favourite is rated, you will justify that its THE game of greatness.

every time a new game comes about wich i am excited i have to tell everybody about it.
When metroid other M was anounced i ran to my roommates room, I jumped around shouting: A new Metroid, A new metroid and 2d with team ninja, F... yeaa, best day of my life! And so on.

My roommate responded with: So what?

Noon to soon? Who the hell needs sleep just play till 4 am crash for 4 hours and continue to game( or in my case go to college or work), thats how i do it.

A gamer is someone who thinks of games as their main source of entertainment. Casaul gamers just think of it as another form of entertainment, like watching TV or reading a book.
Pretty much this.

Also I don't know why people are dinging him, saying things like

You are a gamer when you play games for fun.
That's it.
Why do people like you have to make up qualifications to make you feel better than others?
His question was "Obviously you play games, but what sets the hardcore gamer apart from the casual gamer?" If that is your your answer to the question it would mean my Mom playing Peggle qualifies as a "hardcore gamer"

You refer to wife agro as wagro.
I would say the line there is when you start using the term "wife aggro".
The furthest level of that is when your wife is on the vent channel and playing next to you. Even further when she's on the other team.

Gamer = someone who plays games.

"Hardcore" Gamer (as I assume you meant ): Different definitions I suppose.
Time: More than 1hr/day for more than 4days/week playing games.
Investment: Top of Global Leaderboards
Habits: Sit down at computer at work and without thinking place fingers of left hand on Shift, A, W, D, space.
Attitude: Constantly thinking about what they're going to do when they play next.

Not all apply, I suppose. Also, why do we need to hold other people to certain parameters in order to define and value ourselves?

i agree with all the fact that you don't need to do anything more than enjoy games to be a gamer,. however, i belive that if you only have a wii...ur not a gamer. the wii is like a lame gateway console...like methadone.

You're a true gamer if you play games.

You're not a true gamer if you don't play games. In fact, you're not a gamer at all if you don't play games, obviously.

Simple as that.

I crossed every one of those listed.

You're a gamer when you go to a store and think Potential Zombie Weapons everytime you walk through the tool or gardening aisle.

You're a gamer when you've experienced being cursed at by some little kid after beating the snot outta them in any multiplayer game.

You're a gamer when you play to release whatever angered you before you started and when your done playing you forget the reason why you got angry at all.

You're a gamer when you play the demos or full versions at local game shops and little kids keep asking if they can play.

You're a gamer when you have a crowd of people watching you play Rockband at the game section of any shop.

Finally...

You're a gamer if you can make philosophical and/or enlightening quotes about video games.

You know what a "Loop [http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Loops_%28level_design%29]" is.
[In terms of Level Theory.]

I don't know, to me nobody is "hardcore". You can be a gamer who likes just moderate stuff, or you can be the fanatic who devots all their time to vidya games. I do get pissed with younger kids now and days with their DSs'. I always think, "Goddammit you stupid horse cake, I was playing pokemon before you were ever made!! >:C" But I'm pretty sure everyone's thought that. :/

didnt really take off though
good luck!
OT: playing intense games, not just mainstream
stalker, bioshock, etc.
Stalker was not mainstream 2 games ago and only the really up to date gamers know what it is.
I can't count the number of times i recieved a "Call of Pripy-what?" from EB, and Jb Hi-Fi. I'm convinced the prerequisite for places like that are you have to be a complete blithering idiot, who knows nothing about caming in the last 5 years, let alone the last 20.
Thank god for Gametraders.
