If I *have* to call myself a nerd, let me make a list of reasons.

1) I write fantasy genre fiction.
2) I do a lot of gaming, and dedicate myself to being able to play all genres as well as possible.
3) I love anime.
4) I'm very gradually learning Japanese. No real dedication yet (can't read the pure script), but the actual pronunciation is getting better.
5) I'm part of fan communities, though they are more "dedicated" than rabid type communities.
6) I am far too unique to fit into any one group. Thus, in school though not university, I was a little outcast. Did have other "nerdy" friends, though.
7) I have a brain which actually has some level of electric current in it (i.e. I have some education under my belt, which I actually participated in). As opposed to those who don't, who would be incapable of true nerdiness.
8) I adore debating. Especially on the Internet.
9) I consume a LOT of news media, just for the sake of learning the flow of current events and how to predict other events as accurately as possible.
10) I liked Grim Fandango a bit. Yes, it deserves to be a reason.

I think nerd is what other people call you when they don't like the things you like. Perhaps I'm old fashioned. I mean, I know, technically, I'm probably a nerd, because I like science fiction, computers, games, etc. etc. etc. ... but I absolutely hate the word.
Maybe you are old fashioned, but I agree with you. The way the term is used with pride these days is just separating us more from the rest of humanity, and that's one thing the social group doesn't need. Except for the Ultra Hardcore, who think they're too good to be human and must sit in a dungeon-like bedroom in the dark all day editing TV Tropes entries, and hate human interaction.

I dream of being the badass of the zombie apocalypse. Ergo, I am a nerd, since I can't be the badass of the mess that is the world as we know it.

Despite my "not-a-nerd" points, I think I still count :)
Like I said before you have a platinum membership to the Nerd Country Club.

I just couldent get that hard into the 40k Though (My army wasnt worth that much point wise.) I did love the TAU.
Though I will stick with you on the custom D20 system. Massive room for improvement. Not to metion building my own world Using snips of the dragon star source material. (Leaning more the firefly stlye of universe.) I dont doubt that, that one has been done the hell out of but you cant deny that it is epic universe.

I know I am a nerd because I spot out and correct people's grammar yet I do not use it well myself. (If there is a mistake in that sentence it was actually an accident.)

I am a nerd because when normal people talk about Halo, Call of Duty, South Park, Chick Norris I feel embarrassed for liking something noobs such as the idiots around me like and talk about. It makes me ashamed to be a gamer when I hear 11 year olds on my bus talk about their Halo stories.

I am a nerd because I have read the Terms of Use and stuff and know that most warranties don't actually do anything for the consumer. If one were to read down several numbers they would see that if for example a computer malfunctions, the company is not responsible for the majority of defects or faults..

I am a nerd because I understand all the numbers for system specs, including GPU clock speeeds, I know what GDDR5 stands for and actually means and why computers may run slow even if they have great specs.

I am a nerd because I actually noticed and got mad about SciFi changing their logo and name to SyFy. Seriously the fuuck why would they do that???

I am a nerd because I analyzed the post Hey Joe wrote and realized that he is likely an overly selfconsious douche who is trying to act like less of a nerd than he really sounds and likely acts, and I am writing about it.

I'm a nerd because I'm a fangirl.

I'm a nerd because the first song I learned to play on guitar was the boss battle theme from Final Fantasy VII.

I'm a nerd because I judge movies and TV shows on their historical accuracy.

I'm a nerd because I'm a geek for literature and analyse the crap out of everything to look for deeper meaning.

I'm a nerd because I'm an internet person. I haven't met a meme I don't know.

I'm a nerd because I watch documentaries instead of drama, and subsequently I know way too much useless information.

I'm a nerd because both my parents are doctors, so I know a lot of medical jargon.

I'm a nerd because I'm one of those dorky political activist types.

I'm a nerd because other nerds have seen my nerdy qualities and some of them dubbed me their Queen. I'm nerdy enough to have a fanclub of nerds.

I'm pissed that I missed getting into Mensa by two IQ points.
I dream about C code and shell-opcodes
I've fallen asleep with my head resting on a computer case
Nobody understands the connections I make between items during conversation.
I check my karma daily on slashdot.
I pick up any computer and intuitively understand it on a medium level - I'm never shit hot but I'm never bad either
I can do basic examples of PGP encryption in my head
I get annoyed at PC gamers who think they know networking (which is mildly ironic considering the forum I'm posting on) because they've been to a LAN
I hate every user I ever come across.
I use tcsh and automate everything I can
I have earthquake sensors attached to my servers so they shut down in case of movement.
I have a 20TB array of disks in my home network - spread across two of the ten servers that are in my one bedroom apartment.

Yep I think I might just be nerdy...

I hum 8-bit music. ALL. THE. TIME.

Also, I like to talk about video games, to everyone. Spend most of my time on the computer, and am most definitely addicted to it and video games.

I memorise lines in TV shows and movies (mostly just because I have a really good memory anyway, but still...).

I would play DnD if I knew anyone who actually did play.

Oh I know I'm a huge nerd, mostly is because my memory absorbs anything stupid that I come across.

-I know a lot about older consoles and can fix them.

-I watch Star Trek The Next Generation and can either understand what they're saying or call them out on their lines.

-I build my own PCs/fix others.

- I'm working on a sci-fi/fantasy comic that is nerd-tastic.

- I listen to 16 bit game music and enjoy it.

-Did I mention I listen to 16-bit music? As in Sega/SNES?

-etc

-etc

-I've read both books from the ME series and plan on reading the DA:O book.
-I know what I'm going to do in the event of a zombie invasion.
-I have this poster in my room.

I prefer Geek, seeing as the term "Nerd" tends to bring thoughts of the intellectual to mind.
If you wish a reason to call me this "Nerd" I do tend to make virtually all of my socialization here at the Escapist, socialization withthe outside world happnes once a week for 1-2 hrs, twice a week maybe.

I'm a nerd because because I have to wear glasses to watch TV
I have to wear glasses to see period, guess that could be added to the list, damaged eyes (Most likely permanently) from playing massive amounts of games since early childhood.

Can't really think of anything else.

I proclaim my nerd status due to the following!

- Have remained awake beyond forty eight hours solely to finish Lunar in three days time.
- Have spent an entire day watching anime (52 episodes of Inuyasha at one time, 30 of Naruto upon another and Bleach roughly similar. Additionally watched an entire season of Friends and a few more episodes in a day.)
- I am an avid online roleplayer now upon a Bleach themed website.
- Have downloaded numerous soundtracks from anime and video games.
- I collect strategy guides, currently in possession of over fifty.
- In my bedroom exists a huge leather chair, a leather computer chair, high level PC, 52" HDTD and make shift tables. Yes a bed itself has never been as significant, thus I do not have one.
- Still play pokemon.
- Act out portions of anime, video games or primarily my own creations.
- Am in possession of more anime related material than porn, which in actuality I find horrendously boring.
- I have online mates and otherwise prefer isolation.
- I have been a gamer since the age of two.

Probably others which have slipped my mind however this shall suffice for now.

I spend my time looking at the militaries of various countries around the world.
I know more about the British military than I really should if I did anything else rather than research, watch war related programmes and play war games!

So, am I a military nerd?
