Either:

Haegemonia: Legions of Iron, superb story, brilliant graphics, epicly sized 3d maps and units, I could never get enough of the game. Except the Solon Heritage, the bastard of an expansion back.

Or

Transport Tycoon, an old game from '95, simple, addictive but brilliant.

Okami, I know SOTC is often seen as the end all be all of art, Okami mixes beautiful art, fun gameplay, a great story, and envirorments to explore. Okami takes cultural influences and adds In the gameplay that was perfected by Clover. And its reasonable learning curve will give the Eberts of the world a better chance at immersion, now those who have picked up Halo, only to explode over and over again, will begin to get It. Okami, my favorite game of all time, the pinnacle of what a game should be.
Definitely.
I think Okami also Proved that you don't need a decent voice acting cast to make a decent game. But thats just my opion ^^;

Portal also springs to mind. Its fun,its challenging, got some of the best humor i've come across in a game & unlike most games with guns, you don't just point click and kill.
Well except ... the Companion Cube, never forget.

Really? What's wrong with it then?
Well it's half outdated shooter with suprisingly slow paced combat when it's trying to be an FPS, then half fairly linear showcasing of the source engines physics system when it's not getting the shooty on. The seesaw puzzle was good, but they don't need to keep doing it over and over! The lack of regerating health can do one as well, stuff like that discourages exploration in the few non-linear bits.

It's a good game overall, don't get me wrong. It's just not "flawless". The whole thing does feel like a long ass tech demo of the Source engine tho. And the vehicles are terrible, tho most games with vehicle sections bugger them up.
Outdated? Well, of course now it is. Combat? Well, you like it or you don't. It may be a bit "slow paced" but that's not a bad thing. It works well with the rest of the game. Regenerating health does not discourage exploration; there are health kits lying everywhere. Besides regenerating health would ruin the realistic feel the game has. Gordon is not some super solider that heals by sitting behind cover for a few seconds, he's a theoretical physicist who uses health kits.

It just seems we have different opinions of how good it is. Fortunately, your not the one who picked it to defend gaming, I did.

Demons Souls maybe a really tough game, but if you think that people are doing new things then thats the game I would give you to play. They didn't turn things up to 11 to make the game hard or fun. They dumbed everything down and made you fight like a normal guy with magical powers. You really do start as nothing special and got to work your way up.

civilization 4 BTS

It's an intelligent game that doesn't fit the violent graphic stereotypes of gaming, without becoming too tame.
It may even get players interested in world history.

I would go with Braid. Even non gamers can pick up the controls and play it, and the gameplay is as original and witty as you can get.

Left 4 Dead.
a wonderful work of art which synergizes psychology, art direction, and interactivity with a flowing risk-reward system that keeps a standard of fresh game play regardless of the number of play throughs.

If cinema (the whatever-th art) defends itself first, maybe I'll give it a go.

video games > cinema
I have to agree. I don't usually get caught up in "are games art?" discussions, but I'll say this, if movies are, surely games are, too.

OT: I have a couple, Metal Gear Solid (1&3), and No more Heroes (1&2). I won't even elaborate, those should speak for themselves.

Half-Life 2, Portal, Supreme Commander, Team Fortress 2, Plants vs Zombies, Okami, Spore, Bioshock, Battlefield 2: Bad Company...

They're all games that the videogaming industry should be proud of. Games ARE art, in their own way.
