Half-Life 2, Portal, Supreme Commander, Team Fortress 2, Plants vs Zombies, Okami, Spore, Bioshock, Battlefield 2: Bad Company...

They're all games that the videogaming industry should be proud of. Games ARE art, in their own way.
Half-Life two, how interesting that I'm playing a silent protaginist but I feel for him...or is that because I've been watching too much Freeman's mind?

How else can you legally kill cops, (GTA series) enslave the wild, (Pokemon series) or fly to distant planets, (prolly some Star Wars game that I haven't played yet)?

Bioshock.

But really there are a lot of games. I'll just use that one.

It could have easily been made into a book.

The story was deep, intriguing and had twists that I doubt anyone saw coming.
It was full of interesting characters with amazing back-stories set in a rich environment.
It should be a book, or a movie for that matter
If it was it would never be as good.

Compared to the other games on your list BC:2 sticks out like a sore thumb.

Deus Ex. It's one of the few games out there where the story and more specifically the endings actually force you to make choices based on your convictions. Not to mention the storyline was amazing. It truly represents gaming at its finest.

DISCLAIMER: long discussion ahead for one video game

In my opinion, we should be at a point that games no longer need to be defended. We should just allow people who have never played video games before to sit down and just play as there are games made for a wide variety of people. its time to shun the non believers shunnnnnnn. if i had to pick just one game to encompass it all....well just wait and read it out or just skip to the bottom

GAMEPLAY
The games themselves are simply put the core part of the experience. The glee you feel when completely annihilating an enemy by ripping him limb from limb or the satisfaction of finally beating a difficult level fills a human's needs on the most primeval level. video games are MEANT to be fun and enjoyable and just make us happy in general. the one game must definitely

ART
while a game can stand up on it's own merits without amazing graphics, to be the best game possible it must be beautiful with landscapes stretching for miles and a specific style that defines that game

STORY
If a game has no story how is it memorable? without stories like mario's daring rescue of the princess or master chief's universe saving the games would be boring and repetitive or more so than they already might be to some

the game to defend all gaming must have all of the above and that game is: FALLOUT 3

Bioshock. A work of art in every sense, everything polished to the pinnacle of perfection and one of the most interesting and immersive worlds ever created. It can only be really experienced in a game, in my mind, because the story works because, unlike many stories, which are also good in their way, Bioshock's twist makes you feel like you've been betrayed yourself, since you are playing the game.
As if half of that wasn't enough, it also says a big "fuck you" to the whole 'realism of concept=good' arguement; you play as a man who finds a fully functional (Well, not at time of playing but it was) underwater city, where people have mutated themselves to shoot bees out of their wrists. Yeah.

Killer 7.

"But it makes no sense" I hear you cry.

No. It doesn't. It's called "abstract art".

Also, the Another Code/Trace Memory series. And Skies of Arcadia.

If someone said that all the brown, same-y FPSs have stalled gaming, I would respond with "Yea, you're completely right." Then, in my most artsy, cinematic voice, I would turn and say "But there is a silver lining."

At which point I would explain Silent Hill 2 before anything, then maybe Alan Wake...Fallout 3 arguably for it's artistic view of the world 15 years (I know it's supposed to be 200, but that doesn't make any sense if you think about it. There wouldn't be any old concrete left.) after it's self-destruction by nuclear fire. Maybe some indy games like Knytt and such.

me: Team Fortress 2, it presents an educated level of fun; it's story is weak, yes, but it gives you a reason to do what you're doing; it's character development is none, yet they grow on you almost instantly, and it's designed in such a way that team work IS a requirement, and it's rewarding. And last but not least, it's graphical style is made in such a way that it won't become age quickly and will live on longer than gunmetal gray-brown fps'

prosecutor: yet, it also involves racism and stereotypes, like the black, and I repeat black man who is always drunk and has physical disadvantages over the rest of the white cast, and that is just one example
If you ask me, TF2 has a great backstory through the comics and videos. It doesn't tell you much so that your imagination can fill in the gaps. The stuff it does tell you is great.

yeah, I considered them, but I was using the game itself as reference for that post

and yes, it is epic all that story it tells through the comics, especially Saxton Hale

I suppose though I'd argue that if you had to defend something, you should use all at your disposal.

A slightly more OT "your argument is invalid".
