Where would you like to go on holiday?

I'll let you think about that for a few minutes.

...

...

OK, now, I bet you weren't thinking...

Germany

This only comes to mind because I read this [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/germany/9892046/Freiburg-Germany-Europes-huge-secret-gem.html] yesterday and thought... that's so true. It's a great place to go and yet whenever you broach this with anyone (at least in the UK, dunno about the rest of Europe or the rest of the world, mind you) everyone would go 'what?! why?!'

However, my reasons are completely random (I'd want to stroll down Unter den Linden... visit the Invalidenfriedhof... gawp at Siegessaeule... see if any Krupp C64's still exist... take a tour of the castles... in particular, walk around Sanssouci and visit Old Fritz's grave etc. etc.), yet most of my friends/colleagues can't wrap their heads around why I'd want to holiday there.

Anyway, enough of my Teutonophilia, so, what 'strange' place have you been to (or want to go to) that makes people react as though you're a little crazy?

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm going there for the summer and hopefully will get much better at my German.

That attitude doesn't really exist in 'murrica as far as I know... Why don't people like Germany in particular?

For just a simple vacation though I'd like to visit the Grand Canyon. Beats the hell out of Macinac island XD

I would like to go to Italy and visit a lot of places there like Florence and Venice because I'm a huge Renaissance history nerd and would like where some of that took place. I've told some people that and they think I'm going there for 'a weird reason', but whatever.

Plus I wanna eat actual Italian food and drink the wine there.

I guess the strangest place I've been to was the Bayou in Louisiana, or just go several miles outside of New Orleans. I could barely understand a damn thing anyone was saying, but damn was the food there awesome!

Having a holiday in Germany would be pretty cool I think. I'm thinking Japan though for my trip. I'm planning to go there at some point in the near future too. No concrete plans as of yet but dammit, I will go there. A friend of mine is in a band and it would be awesome to watch her perform but the big draw for me is Shibuya (who'da guessed it?!)

Yeah I was thinking Germany too. I'm studying over there next (academic) year, so I wouldn't mind having a quick visit.

OT:

I'm off the Belgium in July to visit some friends face to face for the first time, it will be a lovely 2 weeks of gaming and getting to know my friends better :)

According to Google, I've encountered those bastards before, so I'm have nothing to fear. Besides, they will not ruin my experience while I'm there.

AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!

Definitely Mexico. I went to Monterrey for some indie music thing a couple years ago, and it was such a great experience. As an American, I had a really warped perception of what the country must be like. You can imagine the horror with which some people reacted (oh god, my poor mother) considering how the media's portrayal of the country is basically "people terrified to do anything because it's so incredibly dangerous" (in reality, outside of border cities, crime rates are lower than most US cities) with a dash of "everything's so horrible, entire population planning to decamp any moment now."

Anyway, it was great to go down there and hang out with a ton of people who are basically into all the same shit as me. I mean, yeah, it's not like visiting Canada--the culture is really different in a number of ways. Some I might find hard to deal with (the relaxed attitude and slow pace of life), while others I absolutely loved... really DIY culture, past "function over form" all the way to "function, period." It's in part driven by economic necessity, but a lot is driven by utility, no bullshit. Really refreshing. (Also my neighborhood is mostly Mexican/PR/DR, so in ways it was a lot like home.)

But yeah, Monterrey was dope, I'd love to go back. Would also want to check out Mexico City. My Spanish is semi-competent, so I'd wanna learn more before going. I'm not really into "being a tourist"... I don't care about sightseeing or whatever, mostly just into chilling/partying with kids my age. Maybe, rather than visit, live there a year or two if I could get work.

Other than that, Shanghai, Shenzhou, and Barcelona.

Also seconding T0ad in that I think most Americans would see Germany as a pretty cool place to visit. The only (maybe unfounded) negative stereotype I hold is possibly too much industrial/techno music. Other than that... clean streets, good beer, castles.

Not weird at all. Those people are weird for thinking you're weird.

Venice is astounding, I've never been to Florence but would sure love to go. Italian food in Italy is just the best - their Pizzas are nothing like the ones we get in UK/USA, but there's so much more to Italian food than Pizza. The people are always so nice too. Plus, they actually have sun. I don't know if you have that where you're from, but in the UK, its rare :-(

If you do go to Venice go on a gondola. I know it seems a bit tacky and touristy but trust me you wont regret it, seeing Venice from the water just adds a whole new dimension to the place.

In short - GO! Italy is amazing!

OT: I'd like to go to 'Murica, just to see what all the fuss is about. Trouble is, there's a lot of places I'd love to visit, all of which are very far apart. For instance the Grand Canyon would be ideal, but then so would New York, and the swamps in the deep South. So many beautiful places, but which ones to choose, dammit!

I would like to go to Japan. Mostly out of my interest in the Pacific War and Imperial Japanese Navy. They have some pretty good museums and the like. I believe they even preserved Mikasa, which was the flagship of Admiral Togo at the Battle of Tsushima.

That and I think Japan would just be an interesting place to see in general.

Yep, me too. Could care less for the Pacific War though, I wanna travel through the country on train and see the Shinto temples and the Ghibli Museum.

Well, I live in the Southwest in the States, so I see enough of the the sun really. I would like to see how other countries do seasons. :/

Florence is my 'must go to' place since there's so much history there, and the architecture! I really want to go to Venice just to walk around and see what it's like, and you bet I'm going on a gondola. Who cares if it's touristy. I want a nice looking Italian man singing to me, so that's enough for me.

A word of advice for the Grand Canyon. Don't go there at night if you're terrified of big spiders, they are every where. It's very pretty and you get this weird optical illusion that it's moving with you when you're walking along the rim.

The Bauhaus, if I get everything sorted out.

My university is part of a programme that lets students study abroad for a year for free, so it beats staying in the UK and getting another 9k in debt.

I know a bit, but it's not great. The programme only requires a basic understanding, so if I'm not up to standards I only have to learn a bit at a summer school.

Bring lots of money, tell people you are Canadian, and be prepared to be taken advantage of and generally treated like absolute shit.

The trains are amazingly expensive. A can of coke will run you about $5. A good meal will cost you close to $20. I hate to break it to you, but Japan is a tad douchy...

...forgot to mention...Learn Japanese because very few people speak English AND when they do, they'll expect you to speak Japanese...
