I imagine someone at youtube was considering it as a possible solution to ad-blocking plugins and someone blew it out of proportion claiming that it is a thing that's happening. If they actually do institute it I think most channels will decide not to use it after they weigh out how much traffic they'll lose vs. money gained.
Even money-grubbing VEVO channels target audience is people too cheap to pay 99 cents for the song they're showing. If they put in a paywall they'd see themselves go from the being in the most popular to least popular channels overnight.

Ever since Google bought YouTube they've been slowly trying to turn it into Google Video. (their shittier service that YouTube crushed) The design of the site now resembles the old Google video one, some asshat decided all the video frames needed to be aligned to the left of the screen like Google video (god help me that is fucking annoying as shit), and recently they've been badgering me to put my real name on my YouTube account. (then acting baffled as to why I wouldn't want to do that) They've systematically destroyed a once great site and I think adding this optional paywall is just them entering the final phase of their plans to remove YouTube from the internet. In fact I have little doubt that in the near future they'll be changing the name of the site or simply bundling it with some other service they have; though the outcome will still be that "YouTube" as we knew it no longer exists.
That there's really no better alternative (and even if there was one people would still stay on YouTube) only increases my frustration.

I can't see this working well at all if it does in fact happen. I cannot think of a single YouTube channel I would be willing to pay for to view. Not one. Sure, it'd be frustrating to not be able to watch some great videos, but I won't promote the concept by buying into it either.
I know I'm probably in the majority on this one. And so, everyone would end up losing money in the end. Not gonna happen. I hope.
