I know this isn't the type of game that's typically under discussion here, but surely some of you must be fans of children's card games. I recently picked up a few of my old Yu-Gi-Oh cards and I've been playing with my younger brother a lot. And then I played one of my friends -- I got destroyed. Them gravekeepers man...

I don't entertain any notions that I'll be able to assemble a competition ready deck, or even one good enough to beat my friend, but I at least want to be able to beat my brother's fairy deck. I just wanted to see if any Yu-Gi-Oh fans might have some input about what deck I should get. I honestly wouldn't even know where to begin, lol.

So does anyone even play this game anymore? What kind of decks do you have? Play often? Just collect?

EDIT: I meant structure, not starter.

I've found that a stall/effect damage deck works wonders.
Loads of low level high defence monsters with spell and trap cards that deal high effect damage and throw the opponent's attacks back at them.

Cards such as mirror force, ojama trio and ground collapse work well. including deck destruction cards are a good idea. Needle worm is a fave as as soon s it is flipped the opponent discards five cards from the deck to the graveyard. use this effect a couple of times and its bye bye deck and bye bye lifepoints. no cards mean no actions.

Build another fairy deck, structure decks have notoriously good cards now.
I'm assuming your brother has Lost Sanctuary and your friend has a Marik Structure deck.
The secret to the fairy deck is buying 3 Lost Sanctuary because well I've seen people effectively use them in a duel.

I have a Vehicroid Deck and an Ancient Gear/Satellite Cannon/Victory Viper deck. After trying out YuGiOh Online, all I can say is: Elemental Heroes or Armed Dragon decks are real nice and not too intricate. At least I got destroyed, but then I was just using the noobdeck, since I already bought all the physical cards and damnit Konami I am not buying them all again in YGO Online. Also, the Satellite Cannons are in that deck because together with Machine Duplication they are the bomb. Vehicroid fusions are awesome because they have a unique fusion card and work with Limiter Removal and such.

Anyway, I love my themed decks, but for an effective deck, you basically want a solid monster strategy, a few traps/magic to support that, maybe an alternate strategy, but mostly 10-15 cards just designed to screw over whatever your opponent might have in store for you. Monster destruction effects, removal from play effects, magic/trap destroy, etc. You get the picture. Like I said, I love my themed decks, but they're pretty easy to beat if you just lay on the trap/magic counters real thick.

Armed Dragon really destroyed me though. Damn that was stupid. And then there was this Dragon King monster that was just silly in that deck.

1 LIGHT Dragon tuner - 2 or more non tuner LIGHT Dragon monsters. This card cannot be special summoned except by Synchro summon. This card cannot be destroyed except by battle with a LIGHT Warrior monster. For every monster in your opponent's graveyard that was destroyed by battle with your monsters this card gains 500 ATK. Control of this card cannot be switched.

Either way, that card looks like a beast if you can get it on the field. Especially if you get ring of magnetism on it and play Lord of D. Still vulnerable to Dark Holes though, even with all that. Guess it has to have some weakness. But I mean, damn.

I knew a guy that built a deck he called the "troll deck." He loved to play monsters that can't be destroyed by battle (Marshmallow was the main card in that deck I think), and then he'd play stuff like mirror force and that one with the two barrels on it that deals an opponent's attack directly to his own life points. I even beat that guy I was talking about earlier with it, and this was back when I was still re-learning the rules of the game. I might try to do just that, but the fact of the matter is that I don't have much to spend, and I'm going to have to build of some kind of structure deck. My options are unfortunately limited.

That is a monstrosity, but no. I was talking about this card:

That guy seems worse by himself though. Especially that ATK effect, damn. Though vulnerable to Dark Hole, keep in mind there are ways to fix that.

Anyway, my personal strategy for my Vehicroid Deck is to use this [http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Vehicroid_Connection_Zone] and if necessary this [http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Chain_Material] to summon this [http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Super_Vehicroid_Jumbo_Drill], followed by boosting its power using this [http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Limiter_Removal] and especially, up to three of these [http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Cybernetic_Zone]. Add a sprinkle of this [http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Mist_Body] and you have what is essentially an indestructible defense-position-piercing megaton hammer of a monster with up to 48000 ATK, 24000 of which is permanent.

Along the way, this can be screwed over pretty easily with enough anti-magic cards. That's the reason I have 3 connection zones in my deck.

EDIT: Regarding structure decks, I bought the Vehicroid Starter deck and it wasn't really worth it. You don't get enough of the cards, not to mention half the series is missing, so Vehicroids are probably not for you since you have a tight budget. Buying them all individually can rack up the cost. The Ancient Gear structure deck is nice if machines are your thing, otherwise I don't know. Machines are definitely my thing so they're pretty much all I know.

Eh. Marik's Gravekeeper Deck was my first non-constructed deck. It did wonders. Do get a Fairy deck if possible. They have one that I can't remember the name of that has a pretty damn good strategy. Just work with what you have.

I'd play MTG instead, way more freedom with much better defined rules. Plus there's more people to play with.

I used to play with an Armed Dragon deck (with Armed Dragon LVL 3, 5, 7, and 10, not like what the guy above mentioned). With a few Masked Dragons in the mix and plenty of dragon-centric traps/spells, you can get one of the higher level Armed Dragons out quick and keep your opponents field clear pretty easily (assuming you have enough monster cards in your hand).

When I mentioned an Armed Dragon deck, it was implied that those are in there. King Dragun was just another card that was in there. The deck destroyed my newbie deck made up of cards from 1996, but then compare 4-star monsters now to those from 1996.

but..gravekeepers are so bad.

structure decks are fine, but have a bunch of filler cards, and are rarely stand alone decent decks by themselves (it helps for you to fill in the gaps and take out the bad cards)

A Disaster Dragon deck is godly. On a budget? You could get Yusei's structure deck and add to it. It has crazy synchro potential. I'd look into that. You could also just build your own Gravekeeper deck. Marik's structure deck makes it pretty cheap. Of course, I like my deck. It is a pure Charmer [http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Charmer] deck that can hold its own in a duel. Not competitive, though. You could wait for the Zexal packs to hit the TCG. First one does the 16th next month.
