Lina eyed the form skeptically. She had been in a bit of a rush this morning and was unable to make it home (so a quick call to Amelia had to be made to reassure her she was alright was in order).
But now that they would finally be let in on what was really going on, well, she was pretty eager to find out the truth...
So Lina signed the form without any second thoughts, intending to find out the truth once and for all.
Ms. Tanya was kind of taken aback by Jack's question. She truly had no idea who or what Wormhole was. Maybe my boss knows...Meh, we'll just ask him when we get there.
"Sorry Jack, But I honestly have no idea what you are talking about. Perhaps this field trip will be able to shed some light on the matter." Ms. Tanya replied with a smile.
Alex looked over the sheet a second time and finally wondered just what he was getting into. He tried his best to keep his head down since as far he was concerned Ms. Tanya was already wrong; he hadn't developed any kind of powers that he could tell. But he didn't want to hold the others back so he didn't correct her and signed the sheet anyways.
Still, something else had been sticking out in Alex's head since that morning. Ms. Tanya had been out of town last night, and she seemed to know what was going on. On a somewhat similar note, a place called the spirit world or something was in charge of all this. Alex had been almost convinced the two were related somewhere.
Well, Ms. Tanya had said she would answer questions truthfully, though whether that was true in itself was something else entirely. Still, there was no harm in asking, right?
"Um... Ms. Tanya?" Alex asked hesitantly, "You were out of town last night, right? By any chance did you go to the Sssspirit... I mean Spirit World?" Alex flushed for a moment as he realized he had first pronounced it like he had heard Bleu do it. Her presence was definitely something he didn't want to bring up just yet.
Angelo knew what he wanted to ask. It had been bothering him since late last night.
"Ms Tanya," He began, "Just how many demons are there? In their world or whatever? Compared to humans and are they all as strong as them?" Angelo heard all about the difficulties about getting from World to world from their little friend, but if a group of people can pull it off, surely there might be others who could and send even stronger ones after them? This was a worrying thought, but a possibility nonetheless. One Angelo prayed he didn't have to prepare for ever.
Damien sighed his name on the sheet the moment he got it. He doubted Ms. Tanya had even finished what she was about to say. Damien wanted answers, and standing between him and what he wanted right now was akin to stepping out on a highway in front of the 18-wheeler from hell. He folded it into a paper airplane and flee it onto Ms. Tanya's desk, where it just hung on by the ledge. "Good. Question time. Question numbers one and two: who the hell are you, and why do you know so much about all this spirit powers crap? Oh, another good one would be why on God's- right, there is no God, forgot about that. I suppose hell still exists though, so why the hell are there demon's on earth if they have their own damn world?" Damien heard Alex's question, and nodded. He wanted to see the one in charge of Spirit World. If Damien didn't like the guy, he sure as hell wasn't getting off light like the demon whose horns now adorned the roof of Damien's car.
Ms. Tanya was genuinely surprised by Alex's accusation. He had figured it out in less than a day. A small smile grew on Ms. Tanya's face as she giggled a little.
"Yes Alex. I did go to Spirit World. Its kind of my home." Ms. Tanya smiled as she thought to herself. This group of kids is a lot sharper than they look..
She then turned to the next person to ask her a question. Angelo. His question was not about her, rather it was about the demons. "Demon world is home to roughly three billion apparitions, all of them vary widely in size and strength. I would elaborate more, but that would leave very little for our field trip to reveal." She explained to him happily. But something was bugging her. Just how did these kids know all of this stuff?
Next was Damien. He posed two very good questions that Ms. Tanya was praying that they would ask.
"Tee hee hee!" She Laughed innocently. "I honestly thought you all would never ask!" Ms. Tanya stood up and held her hand out in front of her, her palm facing the ground. A long wooden oar materialized in front of her and floated in the air. "My real name is Botan, and I am the chief pilot of the River Styx in Spirit World." Ms. Tanya...Er...Botan, sat down on her oar and floated in front of the class. "As for your other question. I know all about spirit powers because I am the key assistant to the Spirit Detectives, which will be explained once Sonny over there finishes signing his permission slip. Matter of fact, it would probably be better for you all to wait until we get to our destination before you ask any further questions. Just let all of that sink in for now, I know that this must be a lot to take in for one morning." Botan smiled cheerfully to the class.
Lina blinked. Seeing their teacher pull a wooden oar out of nowhere and start flying was difinetly out of the ordinary. But considering all she had been through the previous day...
And the teacher said her name was really Botan, an odd name in of itself. It sounded... vaugely Japanese, in fact.
Sheesh, this whole thing keeps getting weirder and weirder...
"Oh! Um..." Sonny had been lost in thought, and had barely noticed the sheet of paper Ms. Tanya had slipped onto his desk. Bearing in mind the subject matter of today's lesson was a literal field-trip to Hell, it was rather incredible that Sonny had managed to get distracted by thoughts about whether he should apologize to Damien, avoid him entirely for the rest of his life or simply pretend the other evening hadn't even happened, but Sonny was still a bit tired, and things like this tended to worry him.
Damien scared Sonny a little. He was big, and he carried a bat around, so he'd always come across as a little scary, but now Sonny was actually afraid of what he might do with the size and the bat. He had completely exploded last night, and even though he always seemed so cool and collected, Sonny wasn't sure it wouldn't happen again. That said, it was sort of Sonny's fault it had happened, and beneath the fear there was the anxiety that he'd upset someone he might consider a friend. Sonny hadn't really been able to think about it last night - he hadn't really been able to think, period - but now that he was able to, it was bugging him. Oh, holy shit, Ms. Tanya was floating.
"Right! Uh, form! Yes!" Sonny signed it without reading it and held it out to Ms. Tanya. He should really start concentrating during homeroom...
Botan hopped off of her oar and collected all of the forms and placed them in her purse. "Alrighty then! Lets be off!!!" Botan clapped as she moved to the doorway. However, instead of opening it, she locked it.
"Excuse me, Ms. Tanya? Er. Botan, but where exactly are we going?" Jason asked. When he saw her lock the door, he couldn't help but feel uneasy.
"Why, to Spirit World of course! Now don't resist or anything, this won't hurt a bit!" Botan Smiled evilly as she pulled a small tube of purple fluid from her purse. "See you in a minute!" She giggled as she smashed the tube against the floor of the classroom. Instantly, a massive volume of purple gas swept through the room, consuming all of the students, but never leaving the classroom, as if there was a barrier around the entire room keeping it in.
Jason coughed and gagged against the purple haze. Within a few seconds, his eyesight began to fade and his eyes rolled back into his head as he collapsed on his desk. The same exact fate befell all of the students, none were spared from the deadly haze.
"Hee hee hee! I bet they are going to give me quite the earful when I tell them why I did that." Botan laughed cheerfully to herself as she disappeared from the physical human world.
Game Over dude.
Just kidding guys, Keep reading.
Dammit all! Why the fuck did I have to come to school on the day that the teacher pulls a Deus Ex and tries to kill us all!? I should have stayed home... Jason thought to himself as he drifted off into a deep sleep...
His consciousness returned to him after a few minutes. He looked around and saw that he was still in the classroom, but something was really off... more off than Ms. Tanya/Botan being missing and everyone in the classroom unconscious, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what was so incredibly wrong with this picture. After staring for a minute. Jason looked down and screamed in a very unmanly way at what he saw. Himself. Rather, his body, slumped over on his desk much like his comrades.
"W-W-w-w-wait...If thats my body, then that must mean...I'M A GHOST!?!?!?!" Jason cried as he finally figured it out.
"Bingo! Bingo! You got it! You're dead!" Botan cheered for Jason as he figured out his situation.
"D-Dead!?!! But I can't be dead yet!!! I haven't gotten laid yet!" Jason stammered in disbelief as he hovered over his body. However, he quickly calmed down as he saw Botan. She had ditched the Brunette School-teacher outfit in exchange for a pink Kimono and bright blue hair!!! "Your hair....Its BLUE!?"
"Ahahahaha!!!" Botan nearly fell off of her oar laughing at Jason's first observation of her. "Aha *Sniff* Yes, aha, my hair is blue, this is what I truly look like when I'm on the job. You know, ferrying people between this world and the next."
"I see..." Jason nodded even though he was clueless.
"Lets hope the others wake up before long" Botan gestured to the ghosts of all of Jason's classmates hovering above their respective corpses.
Damien's eyes widened immediately as he sprang for Botan. He had seen gas canisters before, when the police used Tear Gas to break up a riot every now and then. Damien saw his classmates fall, dead, as they inhaled the lethal purple mist. Damien had instinctively held his breath, but knew he didn't have much air, and knew he couldn't last long. His arms wrapped around Botan like twin pythons as they began to constrict with the strength of the walking dead. "If I'm gonna die by some fucking mustard gas from hell, I'ma gonna make damn sure yer comin' with me, you *****!" Damien screamed in his head. He began to see black spots swim through his vision. "Damn, is it really gonna end...like this?" Damien's grip began to loosen as the 'you're dead' song from the Legend of Zelda randomly began to play in his bead. Perhaps it was his sense of humor, come back to bite him in the ass. Damien screwed up his eyes and put his whole being into crushing Botan now, despite how quickly his strength was ebbing. "No! Make her...pay for....thi..." Damien's grip loosened as he blacked out, pathetically sliding down to his knees before crashing to the floor, his body involuntarily gasping fir air, sucking on nothing save the lethally- laced purple mist.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damien's conscience floated in a black world, a world of nothingness. He couldn't see his body, but knew it was there. He jumped up, and knew he felt his body respond, but he couldn't see it, and it was going to Drive him insane. He couldn't take oblivion. "Little wonder everyone needs a god. People'd piss their pants if they knew this is all they have to look forward to." Damien spoke aloud, just to retain his sanity. Suddenly, colors began to suffuse his bleak world, until his vision once again returned, only to show him his body below. "Well, fuck. I really did die, and not just pass out, huh?" Damien loomed around- for some reason, his soul had been tossed to the back if the classroom, about 10 yards away. He saw a woman with blue hair and a pink kimono. "And who the fuck are you supposed to be, Death's girlfriend?" Damien kept no pretence of any niceties- after all, the worst that could happen now was hell, and that was nothing compared to Oblivion.
"Heeheehee! Silly boy! I'm not Death's Girlfriend. I'm the Grim Reaper, Botan. You saw me in my human persona as Ms. Tanya. I can't exactly walk around in your world with this outfit now can I?" Botan giggled as she corrected a pissed off Damien.
"Now look. I know you're not happy about dying and all, but you did sign the permission form. The only way to go to Spirit World is if you die. So think of this as a small vacation from your body. Plus, you can fly now!" Botan explained as she did a flip on her oar.
Damien looked at Botan. "Somehow I expected the Grim Reaper to be a little more... Grim. I don't know why, it's not like it's in the name or anything, it was just an idea of mine. And don't talk to me about some damn permission form- the only reason I'm not trying to kill you now is because I presume you're dead as well. Or If you're not, then because I am. And don't describe this trip as small- last time I checked, death is fucking irreversible! That's kinda why we cremate the dead or use their organs for transplants, 'cause they sure as hell don't need 'em anymore!" Damien's anger made him float skyward until his head hit the ceiling. He lowered himself until his feet were an inch off the floor, a steely glint in his eye. "Alright. I'm dead. So let's go to the Spirit World, because your boss has some real explainin' to do." Damien began to wait for the others, floating through the air on his back.
Lina blinked at their teacher's words. "Wait, what do you mean by-" she began to say, but was cut of when she tossed a canister to the floor, sending up a cloud of choking purple smoke.
Her survival instincts kicked in, and Lina got to her feet, attempting to escape, but the gas or smoke or whatever overwhelmed her, and she collapsed to the floor.
No... this can't be... how it ends... Those were her last thoughts before everything faded to black...
---
For a moment, there was only darkness. Then her conciousness slowly crept back in and Lina opened her eyes. Her thoughts were hazy, yet she could tell that something was seriously off here, but she couldn't tell what.
Then she looked down at her motionless form, lying crumpled on the floor, and did what any reasonable person would do in her situation... freak out.
Botan laughed at Damien's comment about death being irreversible. "Don't be to quick to write yourself off as dead forever Damien, nothing is set in stone yet. Remember, I'm the one who brought you here, and I'm one of the people that can bring you back." Botan smiled at Damien, acting as if nothing was wrong at all.
"WHAT THE HELL?!" Cried Lina in a fit of hysteria.
"Now now Lina, its alright now. You are dead, but not for long. Just until we meet my employer and then we will zap you back into your bodies!" Botan tried to comfort Lina with staunch enthusiasm.
Damien looked at Lina, who was freaking out. "Alright, synopsis of events. Botan tried- sorry, killed- us all. I tried to constrict her diaphragm so she would be forced to suck in her own purple mist, but failed because she was never fucking alive. Now I'm trying to hold in all my anger, because it's going into the biggest bomb I can make when I meet her boss and he eventually gives me the same bullshit answers Botan did. I'm just trying to decide if I should throw a massive spirit bomb at him or condense it all into a marble and shove it down his throat. And Jack is now awake." Damien sighed as he tried to focus on his anger and lock it into a point to be used later. Damien floated close to the ceiling and slowly descended before answering Jack. "I think I converted when I realized Spirit World negates all use for a god to exist. That, or I'm atheist now. Not really sure 'bout that. Anyway, I think Botan fucked up your chance at Nirvana, or whatever it is. Excuse my ignorance."
Alex looked around at his body lying under him then the others that were floating around the room. Suddenly being dead, he felt... surprisingly alright. He couldn't really put his finger on why, but he felt pretty calm about the whole thing. Sure, later panic and depression would probably set in, but at the moment he was more absorbed by how his hand was now transparent if he looked at it the right way.
Perhaps it was because he had never really given much thought to the spiritual previously. It had just never been a big part of his life. On the other hand, maybe it was a relief to just know that there was something after death.
Alex wondered for a moment why his thinking seemed so much clearer then it ever had before. Perhaps it was just a trick of the mind though... or the spirit... whatever.
Alex was suddenly a bit more concerned with his backpack that seemed to be on fire, burning away with flames but not smoke. However, nobody else seemed to even take note of it at all and that made Alex calm down a bit more. On second observation Alex could see that it wasn't really burning at all. Instead, there almost seemed to be something in the bag that emitted the fire like sign that seemed to shine through the material to Alex's eyes. Whatever it was that was in there almost felt like it was calling out to Alex, drawing him in like a magnet.
Alex reached out to his backpack, but his ghostly hand passed right through it. Well that didn't accomplish much. Alex would simply have to look into whatever it was later. Looking around he saw that the others still weren't noticing it, perhaps only Alex could see it.
"So then Ms. Tanya... Botan," He corrected himself, "what exactly do we do now?" Alex's voice was calm as he felt. He wondered just how long it would last.
Lina glared at Botan... then she blinked again, realizing that she was floating, and had blue hair now. And considering the others floating beside her... this was no hallucination.
She half-listened to Damien's explaination, instead trying to get herself acclimated to the fact that she was, for all intents and purposes, basically a ghost.
"Okay, okay," she said, holding up her hands, "I guess I guess this has something to do with the field trip and all... But how do you intend to explain this" (here she gestured with her hands) if someone comes along?"
Sonny looked down at his own corpse. Well, this was rather... fuck it, Sonny was MAD. There was so much he hadn't gotten to do yet, and now it was all just over!? Admittedly, it was probably partially his own fault for not reading the form- no, fuck "admittedly"; the blue haired slut had just KILLED HIM! Now he wouldn't ever get to apologize to his mother, or get to know Alex better, or Lina, or talk things over with Damien; this was it? Fuck! Shit! Hell!
The time for introspection had passed. The time for vengeance was nigh.
Sonny floated as fast as he could towards the whore in the pink robe and headbutted her in the back with all the strength he could muster. "I'm not very happy with you!" he declared. "Now, I would appreciate it greatly if you would be so kind as to undo the process of death and return me to my previous state!"
