For a bit of light hearted discussion, I thought it might be nice to talk about what you wanted to be when you grew up. From the outlandish claims of a small child (dinosaur!), to the simply unlikely (astronaut!), to the somewhat attainable (a scientist that gets called doctor and gets to invent things!).

The inspiration for this thread was me finally getting through all the paperwork for me to get on my way achieving one of mine. Starting September, I will be becoming a dinosaur. Not really, I'll be starting on an integrated MSc & PhD in Materials Engineering, where I hope to invent something that will be awesome and super useful. I like to keep my goals quite broadly worded.

What did you want to be when you grew up, from the ridiculous imagination of a child to the ridiculous imagination of an adult? Are you achieving that now, or on your way to achieving it? Do you have any plans for new dreams if yours are within your grasp?

I started by wanting to be a soldier as a young child... I grew to want to join the air force and this developed into wanting a commission and to work in ops. And I have achieved that! I am an Ops Officer in the Royal Air Force, and I still love it!

I then set my first goal to be seleced and posted into a particular role that interested me, and achieved that too...

Now I am at a horrible position where I have to decide where I want to go next... and because I am already in the role I wanted I don't know where would be good! :/

Ever since I was 5 in kindergarten I wanted to become a cop.
How do I know? as I worked in a grocery store, one day a woman came to me and asked: remember me?
I looked at her and remembered her being my kindergarten teacher and said: yeas I do :)
She then asked me if I still wanted to become a police officer, two weeks before that I had passed the last tests and got a place in the Police College of Finland, this was a year ago and I am living my dream at the very moment :D

When I was about six I decided I was going to be a fighter pilot. Of course being six, I didn't really grasp the full implications of the job, but it had a good name, and you got to fly. I don't know where I found out about this job, but I know that was my goal. Until I found out I didn't like heights very much and that kinda put me off.

I'd always wanted to be a Police Officer as a child, and that resolve only strengthened when I learned that everyone in my family had either been a very successful LEO or an artist. However, after joining the force...I realized that the police are basically just the jocks from high school who enjoyed exerting power over others to get their jollies off. So I went back to school and am currently working towards a JD degree, which I plan to use to join the FBI.

Ever since I learnt fire was painful and was put off being a fireman when I was about four, I've never really had any idea what I wanted to do. Though I am at least working towards something, since over last christmas I was on a work experience placement in a store and can put a big fat cross through anything retail.
I've applied to college to only study IT and computing, since I'd like a job working with computers, but one that isn't tech or customer or anything support. I have already technically passed A-Level IT, but apart from the data protection act and how databases work, I don't think I really learnt anything.
Apart from that, I'm still not sure what I'm doing.

I always thought it'd be cool to know a bunch of languages though. Could get a job translating stuff because it'd be like being allowed to show off how many languages I know for a living.
If I hadn't screwed up French so much in school, I might be more inclined to try learning some more languages.

When I was a child I wanted to be a zoo keeper. Yeah that ain't pursuiting that career seeing how a part of the zoo keeper job is cleaning the animal craps.

I wanted to be a musician. I haven't played guitar in a while now but I'm working on recording a rap mix tape with a bunch of other people from my city.

Rap is a good fit for me. I've always had a better speaking voice than singing voice haha.

First off, gratz on your awesome achievement! :D Don't turn into some crazy mad scientist though. o_o

When I was a kid I wanted to be a teacher (hahahahahahahahaha...) but as you can imagine, that didn't pan out. When I got into secondary school I realised what a huge mistake that would've been.

My new career goal is to one day own my own Pub. ('cause I'm British and what-not). I think it'd be great to be a landlady somewhere on the edge of the countryside. :D

That or something with owning a lot of animals... Could combine the two though.

I really wanted to figure out and, beat Final Fantasy Mystic Quest as a kid. It took me until two years ago but I freaking did it (I was 23).

As for dream occupations...I never really had one. I never knew and, still don't know what I want to do with myself career wise. I want to make lets play videos and review videos but that would be more of a hobby since I don't see myself as being charismatic enough to really take off like the Nostalgia Critic, James Rolf, etc. I've written several reviews that I've posted here and I've written short stories and whatnot so, there's that at least. Just a hobby I'm pursuing. If the time comes when I somehow stumble dick-first into a fortune then I'll achieve my childish goal of having enough money to not worry about working ever again...or eating...

I never had a childhood dream. #HipsterGlasses

I literally coasted from school with the absolute MINIMUM results to get into college, took a business course because that's the "I don't even know what I want, so this is the safest place to chill for two years because a business degree looks good on a CV" then after that I did possibly the stupidest thing in my life and tried to work as a nurse in an acute hospital ward...

To be fair, I got almost two months into my ward placement before I had to leave for the sake of my sanity and physical health. The stress actually made me stupidly ill. No idea how they manage it...

Then an IT course which I passed all my tests on the first try, now on a work experience course in an office not even a 15 minute walk down the road from my house. Most convenient location ever.

Result: Career doing something or other with computers or something.

Legit.

I think I am in the minority for not wanting to be anything specific when I was a kid, I just wanted stuff I couldn't have. Speaking of which I got one of those things, and since I uploaded this to post here in another thread, might as well:

Next on my list is a working VR machine... Oculus Rift, don't let me down!!

A small part of me will always be disappointed that I haven't yet gained superhero powers and saved the world from some great evil earning the respect of and admiration of all earth's citizens.

It's not too much to ask is it?

Since the day I was three years old, and my father handed me a controller. He loaded up Super Mario Bros. 3, set me up on level 2-1 with a p-wing, and told me to just keep hitting the button while holding right. I have wanted to be a game designer ever since that moment. I tried to go to college for my goals, but was lied to about my courses, and ended up dropping out. I've not recovered from the downward spiral that has been my life for the last 7 years, but that glimmer still shines there. Like a star, taking in the vast materials of the world, and forging them into game concepts that will revolutionize gaming. Just as soon as I can get my brain to work enough for me to be able to learn again.

I have little idea how the military works so this may not be entirely applicable, but can't you just choose to remain where you are?

Interestingly enough there are at least 2 public houses for sale in Kendal, Cumbria :p "The Queen Victoria" and "The Prince of Wales Feathers".

OT: Ummmmm, I wanted to be some kind of physicist but I'm only really good at the theoretical bits and not really good at the maths bits so that didn't pan out.

Then I was a teacher for a while and it kinda sucked.

Now I wanna do something with computers or something, idk, kinda just want some money and a warm bed. Easily pleased.

My recommendation: Start here.

OT: I always dreamed that I would go to a far-off country and do BIG THINGS. I'm off to Russia for six months a year from now, so now I just have to come up with the aforementioned BIG THINGS to do.
