For everyone who thinks it looks better; you're probably right. So Zelda SS should win the award for best artwork or something like that. Graphics award is for technical achievement, not artistic style.
Is that specifically stated somewhere?

As "graphics" is defined, it could mean anything visual, whether technology is involved or not. So again, is it specifically stated to be an award for best graphic technology?

It's an honest question. I know little about this award.

"E3 is typically a showcase for games with incredible graphics. Yet this year, the focus of the show was on new handhelds and new consoles that don't necessarily push the boundaries of technology. And at the same time, current game consoles have been around for years, and the next generation remains a ways off. Did that mean this year didn't have any games that looked amazing? Far from it. Here's our list of some of the most impressive-looking games of E3."

FTFA.

So no, this is not technical. This is for what looks the best.

Therefore, this entire topic is bunk, because the actual article states that this is ignoring pushing more polys and making a higher detail game. This is about what LOOKS good, not what has the highest poly count.

EDIT: And if you want more proof this topic is bunk, Skyward Sword didn't even win. It's not even close to winning reader's choice, either. OP is just pissy because it got nominated over some browny-brown games.

My vote's for Zelda, too. The aesthetics are vastly superior to Rage (Shit brown and cement grey) and Far Cry isn't that impressive aesthetically either.

YMMV.

I actually like the RAGE screenshot. It looks really cool. Yes, it's brownish, but I don't really mind. I like the design of the gun, the costume, and the pipes on the ceiling. My first urge is to move forward and check what's around the corner.

graphics is about art and style, not realism. If realism is what your going for thats great but it doesn't mean stylized games cant be in the running. I personally thought journey had the best graphics of E3.

Well, then perhaps you should write a strongly worded letter to gamestop complaining about the matter.

Strongly worded letters can change nations.

Considering graphics limitations and which jumps out at you more, Zelda has more style and doesnt look the same as everything else. Besides, I've seen more of Z:SS. There's far better pics you could have chosen from that looked better and showed off why Z:SS should be and is in that category and capable of winning.

id never made engines to make pretty screens out of, that's what epic is for.
Also, there is a difference between just making a game grey and brown to be gritty and taking the whole thing to roughly the level of an art form. That's what id has been doing since '93, making beautiful brown levels.

If Skyword Sword manages to pull of this whole 'moving Impressionism' thing, it gonna be fucking awesome. And the 3d Zelda titles have never dissapointed me with art direction, its always been phenomenal.

All I've got from this thread personally is

"oooooh look at that rayman screenshot! that looks great!"

All that really stands out to me.

Looks like I'll be bleating it up with a lot of other posters but yeah: the Zelda screen shots looks like water-color paintings. It's absolutely beautiful. The Far Cry screens are predominantly green too but the Zelda screens incorporate hues of blue and even reds and yellows. Other videos depicting game play show off visuals and settings that could be paintings in their own right. Rage looks like your run-of-the-mill shooters. As an outsider, that one screen from above could easily be something from the Fallout universe (assuming the armor on that one guy is a prototype power armor)

Wow, people are still defending the decision. They say that the game has more color while beeing one with the less color, the colors lack saturation.

But yeah, its seems that since its Zelda they can do whatever they want, just make it cartoony and settle with graphics from last generation.

Well, not really

I am suprised why people dont call Viva Pinata the best looking game ever since they love aesthetics, color and originality.

Am I missing something? Lots of people seem to be looking at the Zelda screenshot and seeing something vibrant and colorful, something that is trying to be aesthetically different or stylized.

What i see, is just "Basic". Its not particularly colorful, the range is just basic (not many shades of any of the colors) and its not very stylized either...its just basic Kiddy-3D graphics that i've seen in a million Nintendo games over the past decade+. To me it looks like it is working within very confined limits, like the graphics of yesteryear, but without any attempt at trying to get around those limitations - "This is the best we could do with what we got." pretty much sums up what I can see. Hell every Zelda looks pretty much just like that.

Also, loving the butthurt from nintendo fanboys about "Oh OP is just annoyed cos its not grey and brown like the rest, Herp derp derp". Farcry3 is anything but grey and brown, Battlefield 3 isn't either, niether is Bioshock, or Uncharted 3...FFS the MAJORITY of the nominees are colorful and/or vibrant.

But no, feel free to pick on one game that has a duller color palette (a color palette, might I add, that fits PERFECTLY with the tone of the game; the entire purpose of aesthetics), you only underscore your desperation to defend what is a shitty choice, a token Nintendo franchise, for a graphics award.
I like you. You're smart.
I concour. I don't even mind the gritty, realistic grey-brown aesthetic because the style usually works for the game. I was playing Gears the other day and it never bothered me. I was playing Fallout and it never bothered me. And BF:BC. And Killzone. And MAG. And GTA IV.

I'd also like to point out that the OP explicitely said he was talking about graphics. Not aesthetic. He's talking about graphics. Not aesthetics. Extra credits did an entire episode on the topic.
