I have a load of Zelda games I haven't finished... :(

I would play them, but I can't seem to connect my Wii to my PC monitor and I don't have much access to it otherwise.

Same reason as Mario: It may be formulaic, but the formula works. A Zelda game is a fun, engaging, thought-provoking, and immersive experience, and Nintendo doesn't want to fix what isn't broken and is making them money.

Re-using assets isn't a flaw if they still feel fresh, as the OP puts it. It's testament to the brilliant design of the games that they're still almost all brilliant experiences. If it ain't broken, don't fix it, and Zelda is about as far from broken as you can get.

I don't hate it, but I sure as hell stopped buying new ones. I'd rather play something new and original than the exact same game I played a few years ago. Not saying they're bad games, it's just that I don't generally like this sort of "shovelware", if you will.

Zelda rehashes aren't shovelware. (Link's Crossbow Training excepted.) Games built around a waggle gimmick over the course of three weeks are shovelware.

I've loved Zelda every since Link's Awakening. Yes they re-use everything from characters to weapons, but they always make it feel fresh by introducing new ways to use things (eg double hookshots) or new control systems (eg Phantom Hourglass).

Another part of it is probably nostalgia, taking me back to those naive, care-free childhood days.

Also, the music is epic.

Level design has a lot to do with it.

There's a particular sense of satisfaction that solving Zelda dungeons gives.

I have never played another game where it felt so good to work out the puzzles and overcome the tricky bits. You can tell Nintendo really pour their hearts into making the games amazing.

It's made more fun again by the gradual upgrade system.

Interestingly, it's a year to the day that I made this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.116254-Zelda-A-Link-to-the-Past-is-better-than-Ocarina-of-Time?page=4] little thread, which almost ended in some Zelda related flame wars... people are passionate about Zelda games and it shows.

I meant that I don't really like how pretty much all they're doing is making the same game but with prettier graphics and a few new items/plot devices. Not much thought, just pushing it through a molder on a factory floor. So yeah, shovelware was the wrong term, but it is the closest thing to what I'm getting at.

I fail to see any "obvious flaws" in the franchise.
Just the rehashed plot, lack of voice acting, etc. These aren't things that bother me, but I can't hardly blame anyone who feels differently.

I tried to introduce a friend to Zelda last week, and only then did I realize how dated the dialogue system is. I'm so used to it that I didn't even think about it until I saw it through a newcomers eyes. However, you know there would be fan blowback if they gave Link a true voice actor.
Oh yeah, I would not like it if Link started talking. Not at all.

Because the original was really the first masterpiece in gaming, I mean it came in a gold case and everyone spoke of it very highly.

Imagine the reaction of gamers today with Mass Effect 2 and times that by 10 and you'll understand how crazed after that game was.

Me, I was poor and never got a chance to play any of it, so the game's nostalgia doesn't have and never will any effect on me...lol

But then again I grew up on Mario and I've never really liked it all that much, it was one giant /MEH back then and still is now...=/

I enjoy Zelda games. Don't think they're the best games ever, contrary to what other people say, however. I guess that could be becuause I didn't grow up with them. Didn't play Ocarina of Time till Windwaker came out.

Admittedly, I sort of enjoy games having a good story, with depth, too, which Legend of Zelda doesn't really have.

I've yet to start enjoying one of 'em. But then again, give me a first-person-shooter or wide-open-large-as-hell RPG, or even an RTS... Infact, give me any game but Zelda or something like it, and I'm pleased.

I'd say, doesn't attract me all that much.

in my opinion, LoZ was at its best at the 2D Era, it was easier and funner for me, Only having to aim in only 1 of 8 directions. now a days i have to aim in 1 of infinite directions.

Link with a voice would induce much fan-rage... but only if he spoke an actual language. It was okay when Midna spoke, because she spoke in a made up language.

I'm thinking that, if they were forced, at gun-point, to give everyone voices, they might do something like that, or, even better, do something like in Ico and SoTC, where everyone spoke in backwards Japanese. Then we can put the dialogue in text boxes anyway so that we can understand what the hell is going on.
