Judging from the things that are different this time around, it sounds like Yahtzee might actually like Final Fantasy XIII. It's linear, story driven, with an engaging battle system even for a JRPG. I am positive he'll gripe about the character design. It's pretty clear he is not a huge fan of Japanese archetypes. If that doesn't kill it for him, from what I am seeing of the game and his past opinions, he might give it a favorable review.

What do you guys think?

(Provided, of course, he actually reviews it)

Nope. He'll hate it on principle...

But for arguments sake, the thing about Final Fantasy is that EVERY GAME IS DIFFERENT.

So, you can't just play one or two and justify hating them all. Even if you are some kind of dedicated anti-Japanese gamer. The series reinvents itself with every entry. New combat system, new leveling system, new characters, new location.

Now, umm...I gotta wait 2 hours to go pick it up.

I doubt he will review it. But i think if he gave a jrpg a good review the four horseman would come.

I still think it'll grind his gears. Everytime I see him talk about JRPGs in any context it seems to be with no love what so ever. who knows though, he may not even review it based on the fact that it is a JRPG. Personally, I can't wait for my copy to turn up in the post today :)

He might play it and like it inside, but probably rip it to shreds to keep up the facade to his fans. Either way, its bound to be an entertaining watch if he does do it

I think he might review it. I am sure there will be some pressure on him from The Escapist. People want to see him tear shit up, so a FF13 review would get a lot of attention. Though he has mentioned that they give him mostly free reign. I think it could go either way.

I agree, he'll probably hate it on principle, but wouldn't it be crazy if he didn't?! I honestly think this may be the best chance a jrpg has had with him in a while.

(Side note, I think Yahtzee single-handedly popularized the term jrpg. I never used to hear it, or use it, so much before Yahtzee came along.)

If he does eview it will be in several weeks time. From my only forray into playing this series & what other people say they are incredibly LLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!! I doubt he would play it for a couple of days then review it. Having seen all the characters he will probably tear it to pieces on that basis. After that what ever he doesn't like about it.

People should have learnt by now. Thinking Yahtzee will like something because you like it does not equate to Yahtzee liking something

2 things
1. The man tends to avoid games like that until 2 months or so of his inbox being shitted on by fan boys
2. He tends to hate J-RPGs

On a side note I think he would have loved the Witcher if he had time to get into it. Though to be fair that game did have a ridiculous learning curve.

You're deluding yourself, Final Fantasy didn't even bother to alter it's core gameplay until FF 12.

God, I hope not.

He reviewed The World Ends With You because he heard it was different from other JRPGs. Even though it was still a Tetsuya Nomura-designed Square Enix game. I doubt he'll review FFXIII. Yahtzee doesn't like JRPGs, and unless it has the same reputation as TWEWY, I think he'll just bash it from afar for humor purposes. After all, Final Fantasy is usually thought of as the origin of all verbose JRPG plot vomit.

I'm personally not touching the thing with a 49-and-a-half-foot pole. I'm done with Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest, on the other hand....

He'll hate it with no choices, terrible story, hours of sitting out to watch CGI cut scenes, bad charecter design, unlikeable protagonists and the general JRPG been there, done that samey-ness.

I'm not buying it, even though all of the reviews say it is the second coming. I'm done with JRPGs.

But it is shiney. That will be enough for a lot of people. For all of its flaws it will still sell like titty flavoured hot cakes.

Oh yes...because the Junction system 8, materia stytem 7 , job system 5, sphere grid 10.

Are just so damn similar. Not all turn based combat is the same, you know.

Why would they have someone review a game that everyone likely knows their opinion on already? That's a waste.

Yeah, I'm going to have to ask if you're thinking of the same Final Fantasy that the rest of us are? Cuz of the four I played I'd say other than 'materia' it was the same. Hell it even had some of the EXACT same characters in it. Doing 'magical steampunky' (adding space ships later) half a dozen times isn't exactly a new location. If they make on in a low fantasy setting where magic (like say conan) I would call that a new location.
The 4 I played had the same leveling system which was 'get lotsa points then we decide for you'.

It's still Turn Based Combat, and a lot of people don't like Turn based combat.
Like me, I fucking hate it with a passion.
Hating all turn based combat JUST BECAUSE its turn based is just ignorance...A lot of TBC systems can easily be found boring, though. But I challenge you to hate Grandia's system.

In my opinion, plots in video games are often judged with a bias. I think most games that are praised for having superb plots are actually rather poor in the grand scheme of things. Bioshock is seen as the holy grail of game plots by many, but it's really not -that- great, in my opinion. Maybe I read too much, but most games don't really push the envelope as far as story.

That being said, I don't really criticize games for having the diabolical villain bent on ruling\destroying the world.

There is an argument that all of those varied systems do is change the cosmetics and the numbers that appear when you hit the enemy each turn...

Of course he hates it because it is turn-based.... He hates turn-based combat. Even though not all systems are the same, man probably doesn't like taking turns. That's understandable.
