Good to know that the title still holds up for SoTN first timers even today. I "borrowed" a copy from my buddy in college when this came out, the poor guy hasn't seen it since.

Great Yahtzee, now play it a bunch of times by going through all the portable Castlevania titles on GBA and DS.

Well done, you shrewd man.
Though you said you never did play it at the time, it couldn't have been a distraction while your mother was drinking booze....
Overall, I wasted five minutes of my life on a (review of a) game that I never heard of, played on a console I'll never acquire, and don't care about.
Are you like a PC only player? You have never had a PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, or Xbox360? This game can be played on any of those. Maybe you are really attached to your Wii or something...
And you live in a cave on the moon with your eyes closed and your ears plugged if you never heard of SOTN. If it isn't your cup of tea, that's fine, but there is no reason to make up nonsense about how you never heard of it.

Oh, and can another person please point out the Alucard reference from Son of Dracula again? That hasn't been mentioned like a fucking million times yet and really needs to be pointed out like ten thousand more fucking times. I mean shit, it was mentioned on the first damn page, isn't that quite enough?

Aye, I'm a PC exclusive 'gamer'.
Never heard of Castlevania before.

A couple of "retro review" suggestion: STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, & System Shock 2

I don't know if you've played it or not Yahtzee, but Dawn of Sorrow is imo the best Castlevania game. It takes what Symphony of the Night did and simply improves upon it. And if you really like Alucard you can play the game as him in one of the unlockable modes.

Why did the first two posters get warnings?
Because they posted only two or three minutes after the video came out. It's like they haven't even watched it, and they still posted, the cheating *British insult*. Moving on...

It was an interesting review to be sure. Unfortunately, unless SotN is in the Xbox marketplace, I won't be able to try it for a while. I originally didn't want to try it because the exploration of that level was just too daunting for me, but I've recently been thinking of trying it out despite that and to spite myself for it. But oh well...At least I've still got Pony parodies and Castle Crashers.

Why does that castle silhouette look like the castle at Disneyland? Of course I may be watching too many Disney movies lately.
Anyway, retro is always good for a change of pace. His bit about voice dubbing got me to thinking of Mad Max and Mel Gibson getting his voice dubbed for the US release. That was a travesty.

I doubt the original stalker review would differ much from this one [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/271-S-T-A-L-K-E-R-Clear-Sky] (you could have at least suggested Metro 2033) and you can glean much of his System Shock 2 sentiments from this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/4-BioShock] review.

Will people stop mentioning "Son of Dracula" already?!
We get it. We don't need 50 different people reposting the same thing.

And I highly doubt that was even his point. I believe his point was "Alucard" = overused.

I am glad that the real enemy of Castlevania was recognized here: BATS. Or. FLYING THINGS. Nothing like climbing to the top of a tower to be slapped down by a bat. And even as the difficulty curve jumped down as you went up levels...no amount of screen-filling lasers could stop them.
Though I did distinctly remember seducing them in bat form so as to avoid the knock back. But such things are only in nightmares.

I really don't think he should do more "retro" reviews. Seriously, if your really jonesin' for reviews of old games with various degrees of snarkiness, humor and/or swearing, you must be new to the internet. There's plenty of people doing that already.

Enjoyable watch as always, but it's rather hard to take seriously if one of the criticisms is that enemies are too varied... in an exploration game.

Dunno, maybe the whole nitpicking thing is turning into a shtick. Or on the other hand maybe I'm just an overcritical prick... uhm. Never mind. Carry on.

I think for the next retro review Yahtzee should do The Legend of Dragoon. It's a classic PSOne title and it has a lot of different gameplay aspects (RPG, Action, Adventure, Cooking Mama (I'm totally serious)) and it really develops the characters quite well, even the ones they kill off early.
